Editor's Note

20th Anniversary of 9/11

It was 1986, and I was in New York for the first time. My associate and I were in “The City” on business.  As young stockbrokers who were changing firms, we were required to travel to Wall Street for additional training.  During off hours, like most visitors, we toured New York as much as possible. One evening at dusk we found ourselves at the foot of an impressive elevator bank where a man wearing a tuxedo greeted us. “Welcome to the Windows of the World,” the gentleman said. He must have uttered those words literally hundreds of thousands of times. The elevator doors opened and within seconds, the two of us were catapulted 110 floors to the top of the World Trade Center.

---

Clearly, thousands of people were directly affected by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Millions more were glued to their televisions as they watched the news coverage of the attacks in New York, Washington, D.C., and rural Pennsylvania.  However, if you are old enough to remember it, which seems strange to say, that day and the weeks to follow were a nightmare.  And although most of us were separated from the horror by distance, it still was extremely personal.

In New York, D.C. and outside of Pittsburgh in the little town of Shanksville, it was hell on earth. To this day, I have college fraternity brothers who were in the New York City at the time, and for nineteen consecutive anniversaries they refuse to travel into the city and go to work out of reverence for those lost their lives and their families.   Every 9-11 anniversary, I take a special moment and think of one friend who was on the phone with colleagues in the North Tower when the first plane hit.  He lost over 30 people that he knew that day.

In our own household, for months afterwards, my wife would light a candle each night and place it in a front window as a demonstration of solemn respect for those who were murdered that day.   We were thousands of miles away, but it did not matter - we were all Americans - and the civilized world stood with us too.  Even though I was not directly affected by the attacks barely a day would go by when a client or prospective client form overseas would not extend their condolences.  The attacks on 9/11 claimed the lives of citizens of 78 countries. People around the world mourned those who perished in the attacks, and various world leaders made comments that reflected the global impact of the senseless acts of violence that were perpetrated on 9/11. The comments from then-German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder reflect how shaken the world was in the aftermath of the attacks. "They were not only attacks on the people in the United States, our friends in America," Schroeder said, "but also against the entire civilized world, against our own freedom, against our own values, values which we share with the American people."

More time would pass and then I received a call from my father with news that it indeed was going to hit closer than expected as he told me of a childhood friend who had been in the second tower and did not make it.  We had not stayed in touch but still there was a common bond to our backgrounds.  Moreover, his dad who had passed several years prior to 9-11, and my dad had remained very good friends throughout their lives.  It felt like punch to the gut.

Perhaps you have similar stories. Many absolutely do.  I offer this in this narrative because it is personal (present tense not past tense) for anyone who was either directly or indirectly touched by 9-11.   The motto used to be “Never Forget” and I truly hope we have not after only 20 years.

My wife and I had the occasion to be back in New York several years ago and made it a special point to visit the 9-11 memorial.  It was an extremely emotional day and one that I will never forget.  If you have the opportunity to visit New York , it is something that you really should experience.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes bound for California. The planes departed from airports in Boston; Newark, NJ; and Washington, D.C. September 11 would become an infamous date in American and world history, and the events of that day would forever change the us.  As the world commemorates the 20th anniversary of 9/11, the following timeline, courtesy of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, can help people fully understand how events unfolded on that late-summer morning two decades ago.

· 5:45 a.m.: Two of the hijackers pass through security at Portland International Airport in Maine. The men will take a short flight to Boston Logan International Airport, where they will join three other hijackers and board American Airlines Flight 11.

· 6:00 a.m: Two of the hijacked planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, will eventually crash into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center complex in New York City. The day was a significant one on the New York City political calendar, as polling stations opened at 6 a.m. for primary elections.

· 7:59 a.m.: American Airlines Flight 11 takes off from Boston with 11 crew members, 76 passengers and five hijackers on board. The plane, which will eventually crash into the North tower at the World Trade Center, is filled with more than 76,000 pounds of fuel.

· 8:15 a.m.: United Airlines Flight 175 takes off from Boston with nine crew members, 51 passengers, and five hijackers on board. This flight also is loaded with 76,000 pounds of fuel.

· 8:19 a.m.: American Airlines ground personnel are alerted by flight attendant Betty Ann Ong that Flight 11 is being hijacked. This call lasts roughly 25 minutes and Ong reports that the cockpit is unreachable. In the moments before Ong's call, one of the hijackers stabbed Daniel M. Lewin, who was sitting in front of him in first class. Lewin is likely the first person killed in the 9/11 attacks.

· 8:20 a.m.: American Airlines Flight 77 takes off from Washington Dulles International Airport. The flight has 49,900 pounds of fuel and is carrying six crew members, 53 passengers and five hijackers.

· 8:21 a.m.: The transponder on Flight 11 is turned off. This device is meant to allow air traffic controllers to identify and monitor the flight path of a plane.

· 8:24 a.m.: One of the hijackers of Flight 11 unwittingly broadcasts a message to air traffic controllers alerting them to the attacks. The hijacker was attempting to communicate with passengers and crew within the cabin.

· 8:30 a.m.: Around this time, roughly 80 people have already begun gathering on the 106th floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center for a financial technology conference. The conference is one of many events on the Trade Center schedule that day.

· 8:37 a.m.: The Boston Air Traffic Control Center alerts the military that a hijacking is under way.

· 8:42 a.m.: United Airlines Flight 93 takes off from Newark International Airport. The flight was due to take off at roughly the same time as the other hijacked planes, but was delayed due to routine traffic. Seven crew members, 33 passengers and four hijackers are on board. The flight is filled with 48,700 pounds of fuel.

· 8:46 a.m.: Five hijackers crash Flight 11 into floors 93 through 99 of the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Hundreds, including everyone on board the flight, are killed instantly. The crash severs all three emergency stairwells, trapping hundreds of people above the 91st floor.

· 8:46 a.m.: Police, paramedics and firefighters are sent to the North Tower.

· 8:50 a.m.: While visiting an elementary school in Florida, U.S. President George W. Bush is notified that a small plane has hit the North Tower.

· 8:52 a.m.: A flight attendant aboard Flight 175 reaches a United Airlines operator in San Francisco and reports the flight is being hijacked. By 9 a.m., various passengers on Flight 175 have called family members.

· 8:55 a.m.: The Port Authority informs people inside the South Tower via a public address system that the building is secure and there is no need to evacuate.

· 8:59 a.m.: The Port Authority Police Department orders both towers evacuated. One minute later Captain Anthony Whitaker expands the order to include all civilians in the entire World Trade Center complex.

· 9:02 a.m.: An evacuation order is broadcast in the South Tower.

· 9:03 a.m.: Five hijackers crash Flight 175 into floors 77 through 85 of the South Tower. All onboard the flight are killed, as are an unknown number of people inside the building. Two of the three emergency stairwells are impassable and most elevator cables are severed, trapping many people above the impact zone and inside elevator cars.

· 9:03 a.m.: A second call for mobilization brings the total number of New York City Police Department officers responding to the scene to roughly 2,000. In addition, the FDNY issues a fifth alarm and deploys several hundred additional firefighters to the scene.

· 9:05 a.m.: President Bush is informed that a second plane has crashed into the World Trade Center.

· 9:12 a.m.: Flight attendant Renée A. May calls her mother and tells her that hijackers have seized control of Flight 77. When May's call is disconnected, she calls American Airlines.

· 9:30 a.m.: Amidst reports of additional hijacked planes, the Mayor's Office of Emergency Management at 7 World Trade Center is evacuated.

· 9:37 a.m.: Hijackers crash Flight 77 into the Pentagon. All 53 passengers and six crew members perish, and 125 military and civilian personnel on the ground are killed in the fire caused by the crash.

· 9:42 a.m.: The Federal Aviation Administration grounds all flights, ordering all civilian planes in United States airspace to land. Departures also are prohibited.

· 9:45 a.m.: Evacuations at the White House and the U.S. Capitol begin. Both the House of Representatives and Senate are in session at the time the evacuation begins.

· 9:58 a.m.: Flight 93 is flying so low to the ground that passenger Edward P. Felt is able to reach an emergency 911 operator in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.

· 9:59 a.m.: The South Tower collapses after burning for 56 minutes. The tower collapses in just 10 seconds.

· 9:59 a.m.: Continuity-of-government procedures are implemented for the first known time in American history.

· 10:03 a.m.: Four hijackers crash Flight 93 into a field near the town of Shanksville, Pennsylvania. All 33 passengers and seven crew members on board perish. Passengers and crew had stormed the cockpit, and the plane ultimately crashes just 20 minutes' flying time from Washington, D.C.

· 10:15 a.m.: The E Ring of the Pentagon collapses.

· 10:28 a.m.: The North Tower collapses after burning for 102 minutes. More than 1,600 people are killed as a result of the attack on the North Tower.

· 11:02 a.m.: New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani urges the evacuation of lower Manhattan.

· 12:16 p.m.: The last flight still in the air above the continental United States lands. Within two and a half hours, U.S. airspace has been cleared of roughly 4,500 commercial and general aviation planes.

How to Discuss 9/11 with Children

Twenty years ago, parents across the United States faced the delicate situation of discussing 9/11 with their children. Many adults watched their televisions with a sense of disbelief and horror on September 11, 2001, and parents were forced to explain the inexplicable events of that day to their youngsters.

As the world prepares to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of 9/11, many people who were children or adolescents on the morning of September 11 now have children of their own. Parents may need help explaining the significance of 9/11 to youngsters who were not alive when the attacks occurred. The 9/11 Memorial & Museum recognizes how difficult such conversations may be for parents and offers the following tips that can serve as broad guidelines to facilitate discussions about 9/11 and terrorism.

· Listen. The museum notes that some children will want to discuss 9/11 and terrorism and some won't. Discussions should not be forced if kids do not want to talk about 9/11 and parents can let kids know they're ready to listen whenever kids want to talk. Kids who want to speak can be encouraged to share their thoughts and ask questions. Parents are urged to actively listen to kids' concerns, noting their body language and validating their emotions.

· Don't avoid discussions. Children who don't want to discuss 9/11 and terrorism should not be forced to do so. But parents also should not avoid discussing 9/11 and terrorism in general solely because of the difficult subject matter. The museum urges parents to invite conversations if children express an interest in learning about terrorism and 9/11. Ask children, "What would you like to know?" or "How does that make you feel?"

· Remain calm and avoid appearing anxious. Adults should be aware of their tone when discussing 9/11 and terrorism with children. Make a concerted effort to remain calm and not appear anxious. Answer questions honestly, but also in a way that is developmentally appropriate. Ask children if they have any concerns and provide appropriate, realistic reassurance. Let kids express their feelings and focus on how to cope with those feelings rather than suggesting their feelings are unfounded. If necessary, share what's been done since 9/11 to keep the country safe and prevent future attacks.

· Learn about 9/11 so you can answer questions truthfully. The images of 9/11 are indelible, but even adults who lived through the tragedy may not know the answers to questions kids may ask. In anticipation of such questions, parents can visit 911.memorial.org to learn more about 9/11 so they're better prepared to answer kids' questions. Resolve to find answers to questions together if need be.

· Emphasize hope. Acts of terrorism are often so horrific that they can contribute to a deep sense of despair. But parents can explain to children that events like 9/11 also tend to bring out the best in people who are inspired to help and support family, friends and strangers alike. Emphasize the ways this happened on 9/11 and express to kids that their own acts of compassion may help to prevent future acts of violence and intolerance.

The twentieth anniversary of 9/11 may inspire children to ask questions about the attacks and other acts of terrorism. Parents can employ various strategies to ensure such conversations are constructive and supportive.

Drones for Business & Pleasure

Drones continue to attract hobbyists across the world. In mid-2017, 8 percent of Americans said they owned a drone, and nearly 60 percent had seen one in action, according to a Pew Research Center survey. The Federal Aviation Administration predicts sales of drones will reach seven million units by 2022.

Businesses also rely on drones in various applications. Camera-equipped aerial devices can provide bird's-eye views of real estate for sale or college campuses for promotional purposes, as well as topography assessments prior to construction. When the FAA opened a new drone registration system on December 21, 2015, more than 181,000 drones were registered within a month. The database continues to grow and help prevent potentially dangerous incidents involving drones flying in restricted air space, among other issues.

Flying drones where they shouldn't be is just one potential pitfall of drone use. Beginners may need a crash course in safety before they take their devices to the sky. The following are some tips to help people become competent drone operators.

· Upon receiving a drone, register it with the FAA through the Unmanned Aircraft Registration system if it weighs more than .55 grams and less than 55 pounds. Registration costs $5.

· Read the drone manual first before operating the device. Doing so will help you become familiar with the drone's specific features.

· Master the controls by taking the drone out in a wide open and safe space or use flight simulators if the drone comes equipped with them. Drone usage requires practice and expertise comes with repetition and mastery of each button and function.

· Familiarize yourself with restricted areas. Any national or state park is off limits to drone use, according to The National Park Service. This also applies to the many seashores and other sites run by the NPS. The regulations evolve, so it pays to stay up-to-date regarding where drones can be used.

· Know drone laws where you live, as many states have drone laws in place.

· Focus your attention on the drone and try to avoid distractions. Having too many people around while you're flying the drone may be distracting, so avoid flying one near crowds.

· Keep the drone in sight so that you'll be better able to see potential hazards or obstacles.

· Windy days are some of the most difficult conditions in which to fly a drone. Avoid windy days, particularly if you are a novice.

· Accidents will happen as you get to know the drone. Keep spare parts on hand to make repairs as necessary.

Drones are popular among professionals and hobbyists alike. Learning to operate the drones in a safe and effective manner can ensure greater success.

Lead a Success Virtual Business Meeting

 by Candace Smith
The Etiquette Blog

Virtual business meetings are one method for adjusting to changing business practices in new-normal times.  But home and private environments have changed, too, leaving many employees feeling stressed and overworked.

No wonder online organizational meetings can be dreaded in these fast-changing environments!

Business is always about the bottom line — what the primary concerns are, the salient things.  An emerging most important bottom line is recognizing meeting attendees’ sense of their own time value as well as their invaluable contribution to the good of the whole company endeavor.

Clients, employees, and colleagues often experience a keen sense of lost time through “meeting sitting time,” where appearing distracted is also costly.  The response called for is true recognition, appreciation, and respect for everyone’s time.

A Respectful Meeting Environment

As an executive in international hospitality technology told me, “Making the meeting as pleasant as possible while valuing each person attending is the ever-present aim to be accomplished.”

And the only way to accomplish this is with appropriate meeting leadership.  The leader of the virtual business meeting – or any meeting – is responsible for demonstrating careful time management and helping orchestrate a respectful meeting environment.

To help achieve this, you might:

  • Acknowledge and appreciate that participants’ time is valuable, thus time management is your charge.
  • Ensure that the meeting agenda is clear and presented well in advance of the meeting.
  • Ensure everyone understands your role.
  • Provide orderliness in reaching the meeting goal during the meeting.
  • Patience and personal respect are always the interactive guidelines for all members.
  • A “we’re all in this together” attitude shows through with perseverance in small and large sacrifices.  Employees benefit when the company benefits and visa versa.

Planning Virtual Business Meetings

Whether your meeting is categorized as a status-update, decision-making, problem-solving, brainstorming, innovation and idea-sharing, or team-building meeting, knowing the purpose and hoped-for outcome is critical.  The agenda guides expectation on what needs to occur before, during, and after the meeting.

The main ingredient in the recipe for an effective teleconference meeting is AGENDA, AGENDA, AGENDA.  Without it you will end up with "Meeting Soup."

A suggested agenda for virtual business meetings might be:

1- Acknowledge and greet attendees as they come online.
2- Welcome and confirmation that all attendees present.  An expression of gratitude for everyone’s time.
3- Introductions of guests or newcomers.
4- Review the purpose, goals, and action items for the meeting.  Include time allotments for specific subjects (the last five minutes will be devoted to questions, etc.).
5- Conduct the meeting discussion, making sure to allow input from each attendee.
6- Short re-cap and calendar check.  Close with appreciation.
7- Follow up immediately with a post-meeting re-cap with next meeting calendar reminder.

Meeting leader/moderator must-do’s:

  • Begin in gratitude of those present.  Use first names often.
  • Acknowledge at the beginning and throughout the meeting your awareness of “our precious use of time.”
  • Manage off-topic comments by gracefully acknowledging “It is an interesting topic, and because we have so many things to cover, may be save it for the end?” or “Let’s save this topic for another meeting.”
  • Privately, the meeting leader may want to acknowledge a from-the-heart appreciation of something a participant said or did.  These kinds of acknowledgments can feel like a surprise gift, as they are statements of the value another person is contributing.

As a dispute management executive said in our interview, “Good manners is my best management and planning tool.  Being professional means thinking of others. Kindly hosting meetings where everyone knows what that person is supposed to bring to the meeting is a way of thanking people for their needed contributions to the purpose of the meeting ahead of time.”

Virtual business meetings can be a dreaded necessity.  When not conducted well, they can feel chaotic and unorganized, accomplishing little.  But when conducted properly, attendees feel they have contributed to an accomplished goal.  Their time has not been wasted.

Another business executive advises, “Letting employees know they are loved and appreciated is vital. Public recognition and little surprise gifts are ways I like to do that.”

Healthy Swaps for Daily Cooking

An ability to adapt is one of the most important skills to have in the kitchen. Following a recipe can give home cooks the cursory knowledge they need to make a delicious meal, but an ability to tweak recipes allows individuals to put their own spin on foods and customize meals so they fit with their particular lifestyles.

A person may have to change an ingredient to avoid a food allergy, or he or she may swap something out to make a dish more nutritious. Some substitutions can change the texture or even taste of the overall recipe, as no substitution can mimic the original ingredient exactly. However, a home cook will often find the results are acceptable, and may even prefer them to the "real" thing.

Original ingredient: White flour

Substitution: Whole wheat flour, nut flour

White flour lacks many nutrients because the grain has been largely stripped of its most important parts before being ground. Whole wheat flour has extra fiber that aids in digestion and can lower risk for certain diseases. Those with a gluten intolerance can use nut flours, like almond flour. Whole wheat flour and nut flours are denser than white flour, so you may need to experiment with 3/4 cup to 1 cup of white flour ratios in recipes.

Original ingredient: Sugar

Substitution: Applesauce

Sugar is the foundation of many baked goods, but too much sugar provides empty calories and can contribute to various illnesses if eaten in large quantities. Swapping one cup of unsweetened applesauce for one cup of sugar can provide sweetness with more health benefits, such as added fiber and vitamins.

Original ingredient: Oil or butter

Substitution: Fruit or vegetable puree

Try adding pureed carrot, banana, pumpkin, or apples to recipes to boost moisture. These ingredients also add extra flavor and nutrients. The ratio is generally one-to-one for the replacement. However, cooks may want to experiment to find the best ratio for their recipes.

Original ingredient: Buttermilk

Substitution: Milk and lemon juice

If you don't have buttermilk on hand or if you feel that it is too high in calories, mix enough milk (low fat if desired) with enough lemon juice or light vinegar to reach 1 cup.

Original ingredient: Water

Substitution: Stock

Make a batch of vitamin- and nutrient-rich vegetable stock to use with foods that are boiled, such as pastas and rices. The stock will add flavor and nutrition.

Original ingredient: Egg

Substitution: Vinegar, baking powder and liquid (baking) or egg substitute (cooking)

When baking, 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder plus 1 tablespoon vinegar plus 1 tablespoon of a liquid can replace an egg in the recipe if you're avoiding eggs.

Original ingredient: Sour cream

Substitution: Plain Greek yogurt

Greek yogurt, with its natural helpful probiotic bacteria, can be a healthy substitution for sour cream in dips, dressings and other recipes that call for sour cream or even mayonnaise.

Food substitutions can help people customize recipes to fit their dietary needs. People can experiment with various ingredients to develop delicious meals.

Must Have Road-Trip Smartphone Apps!

Many of us will be hitting the Road between now and the end of the year to relieve the travel itch that has no doubt built up during the COVID-19 Pandemic.  With that in mind, we thought it a good idea to review some apps which can make the trip easier and more fun.

Certain smartphone applications and features can make road trips and other excursions easier, safer and more enjoyable - provided these apps are used before getting in the car, when safely pulled over, or in the hands of a passenger.

It is never a good idea to use smartphones or other devices while behind the wheel. In fact, distracted driving is a key risk factor for automotive accidents. However, certain smartphone applications and features can make road trips and other excursions easier, safer and more enjoyable - provided these apps are used before getting in the car, when safely pulled over, or in the hands of a passenger.

Make a pitstop

Drivers may not know where to pull off the highway when they need a mid-trip snack or a restroom run. iExit enables you to see all upcoming exits on a particular roadway (when location services are turned on) and which amenities are accessible at each exit. The app also tells drivers which way to go if they need to find gas stations or restaurants. Icons indicating food, fuel, hospitals, and even banks/ATM machines are included to indicate what's available at the exit.

Popular sights

Field Trip by Google will pull from categories you have selected and your location to indicate potential sites of interest around you. The app works off of recommendations from travel and lifestyle sources, and will provide Bluetooth-enabled alerts when you're close by.

Fill 'er up

Exclusively for locating fuel stations, GasBuddy also helps drivers compare gas prices so they can save money if they so desire. When fuel costs can make or break a trip, this app will keep your tank and wallet full.

Gain performance data

To keep track of vehicle performance, use Dynolicious Classic. While this app's not free, it's less expensive than a visit to a service station. Dynolicious relies on an iPhone's built-in accelerometers to gauge lateral and longitudinal acceleration and horsepower.

Get trusted repairs

It is important to find a trusted mechanic who will fix a problem for a reasonable price. Repair Pal is an app that has already culled quotes and reviews from nearby mechanics to simplify comparison shopping.

Navigation made easy

Smartphones already feature built-in map apps that offer navigation and directions, such as those offered by Google and Apple. But Waze is a community-driven app that provides real-time updates to traffic situations, gas prices, law enforcement sightings, and alternative routes to avoid delays.

No more lost cars

Finding that elusive parking spot can be challenging. When you finally grab a space in a parking garage or on city streets, you want to make sure you can find your way back there easily. Enter Honk, an app that can mark your vehicle's location with a GPS pin. You can also make text or verbal notes indicating position or how much time you have on a parking meter, as well as use the app to find businesses nearby.

Various apps can be assets to drivers, helping them to save both money and time.

Investment:
Swiss Trust Companies are available for an initial investment ranging from $70,000 to $150,000. The average client invests approximately $100,000 to acquire their company. Your outlay will increase with the age of the structure since older companies are more difficult to locate. As a rule of thumb, older Trust Companies are more appropriate for clients who wish to make their STC acquisition an operational non-banking financial entity. This type of business model typically involves portfolio management or some other activity involving third parties. The age and established corporate goodwill are also of major importance when establishing corresponding banking relationships. If a client, however, is looking to benefit from owning a Swiss Trust Company solely for asset protection, then a younger company would be more appropriate and thus require a smaller investment.

Our Service & Experience:
- Experience: More than 25 years involvement with successful STC acquisitions.
Neutrality: If there is a better option for your business plans you will be guided in that direction.
Education: Professional and dependable source of information.
