Editor's Note

21st Anniversary of 9/11

This Sunday marks twenty-one years since the 9-11 attacks.   There is plenty of political rhetoric in the air as the November mid-terms come close in the United States.  To my knowledge, however, not a single mention of this solemn moment in U.S. history.  It deserves more attention than it is being given.

x My wife and I had the occasion to be back in New York several years ago and made it a special point to visit the 9-11 memorial.  It was an extremely emotional day for us, and one that I will never forget.  So, If you feel moved perhaps take a solemn moment this Sunday morning before your weekend activities and pay respects to those souls lost that day.   After all, we did promised that day to never forget.

Potential  Medical Benefits of Meditation

Better Focus & Less Anxiety

-------

Meditation has long been part of Eastern practices and recommended by alternative health practitioners. With the widespread adoption of yoga, breathing exercises and general mindfulness, meditation has become much more mainstream and something many traditional physicians now recommend to their patients.

According to the yoga equipment supply company Gaiam, meditation is an approach to training the mind that is similar to the way athletes train their bodies. Many meditation techniques exist, and the term meditation refers to an overall discipline rather than one specific activity. People who have been meditating for some time may be able to rest their brains for extended periods of time. Some may need to work up to it. Others practice focus-specific meditation, which makes them focus on a sensation or a particular object to tune out other distractions. Another option is open-monitoring meditation, which involves paying attention to all of one's surroundings. Instead of reacting, you just notice things as they are.

The brand-building company Buffer says that meditation produces measurable changes in the brain. Modern technology like MRI scans show a decrease in beta waves during meditation. Those waves normally indicate that the brain is processing information. Meditation helps to slow or stop that processing.

Meditation has been long studied as a way to induce relaxation and help alleviate stress. In the 1970s, Herbert Benson, MD, a researcher at Harvard University Medical School, coined the term "relaxation response." In Benson's words, this is "an opposite, involuntary response that causes a reduction in the activity of the sympathetic nervous system." Meditation helps achieve that.

Meditation may produce many different health results. Some are immediate, and others are cumulative. Here are some changes a person may see:

· better focus while not meditating

· reduced anxiety

· lower blood pressure

· lower blood cortisol levels

· greater feelings of well-being

· reduced feelings of stress

· ability to cope better with challenging situations

· potential benefits on immune system function

Meditation is a skill someone learns with practice. It's never too early or too late to learn how to meditate. Online courses and neighborhood studios can help people get on the road to wellness through meditation.

Unites States as a Privacy Haven

For Non-U.S. Citizens.

-------

Shelf corporations in the United States have many profound business purposes. They are frequently used for holding personal or business assets.  Another common purpose for the creation of a shelf corporation is as a turn-key business package that can later be sold to someone who wants to start and operate a company without going through the effort to form a new one.   Others might benefit who may not qualify for a bank loan, line of credit, or government contract because they or their existing company does not have the required credit scores or a two to five year established business history.  By purchasing a shelf corporation, an entrepreneur now instantly owns an established company that has been "in business" for several years without debts or liabilities.

For Non-U.S. citizens, owning a shelf corporation in the United States may enhance privacy and open new markets.  Since the United States is not a participant in the OECD Common Reporting Standards, it is often looked upon as a privacy haven for non-citizens looking to invest here.  The Common Reporting Standard (“CRS”),  was created by the OECD in 2014 pursuant to a meeting of the G-20 nations in Australia and calls for the automatic exchange of financial account information between agreeing jurisdictions. It should also be noted, however, that to open a bank account, Non-U.S. citizens will likely need to travel to the United States and meet with potential banks.

Putting Out the Fire of Embarrassment

by Candace Smith
The Etiquette Blog
Candace Smith Etiquette

Embarrassment can cause you to forget your etiquette-ful self.  It distracts you and sets you up for even more. But it can also present learning opportunities.

Recently I was late to a Zoom call which was important for my work.  The email with the link to sign on was on my desktop, but in my rush, I accidentally deleted the link.  With some help, seven minutes later I signed into the Zoom meeting with a person was interested in hiring me for a sponsored event. To say I was embarrassed was an understatement!

My mind was filled with distracting thoughts making it difficult to focus on the questions at hand.  I was fortunate, as the person simply denied my embarrassment by defending me.  He was my champion of the moment.  Soon the conversation was on its way, and it ended well.

In the Heat of Embarrassment

When you’re embarrassed, you can be pulled away from your authentic self.  You might feel as if you’ve done something wrong, feel rejected, or as if you are not trusted.  You catch yourself in real or imagined failure and it feels too late to turn around.  Or you interpret something someone said and jump into self-criticism.  Your body feels hot.

When you find yourself in the heat of embarrassment, there is a strategy for overcoming it.

  • Give yourself a pause and breathe.
  • Stand up tall and look at others directly as you smile.
  • Apologize if you’ve made a mistake of judgment.
The most important thing is to move past that heat moment and get on with your best self.

Turn Embarrassing Conversations Around

We all have experiences of, “I can’t believe I said that!”  But we are human and so there are times when . . . we’re going to say that.

Though the words we say might make us wish for invisibility, we can also use our words to repair a situation.
  • In conversation, you get stuck in a little fib you’ve told.
“I made a mistake by saying that and actually, I’m not sure why I said it.”
  • You say, without thinking, “Nice to meet you,” and the person responds, “Oh, we’ve met more than once.”  Say, “I’m sorry, it’s nice to see you.”
  • Said something ridiculously silly or out of line?  Add on with, “Well, I need a life raft to the Island of Tact.”  People will laugh, and you’ll be back into the stream of conversation.

Embarrassment is nothing unique.  We all have felt it.  We just need a few reminders to help us feel safe and know that this is a common feeling.  Since other people are mostly thinking of themselves, when you make a social mistake, it oftentimes makes you more relatable.

Owning your feelings and acknowledging the embarrassing situation will help you through it. Every so often, self-deprecating humor is okay, too.  As you slip off your chair, “Well, I’m not as well-seated as I thought I’d be.”  Just remember to always end everything in kindness to yourself and others.

Reasons to Try Apple Cider Vinegar

Five Potential Benefits.

-------

Vinegar is a fermented liquid made from a wide array of ingredients that is used primarily to preserve and flavor food. But the uses for vinegar are almost as extensive as the variety of flavors it's available in.

The word "vinegar" comes from the French "vin aigre," or "sour wine." Vinegar is a diluted solution of acetic acid that forms with the fermentation of grapes, apples, rice, corn, and many other ingredients.

Apple cider vinegar, or ACV, is a type of vinegar that has recently skyrocketed in popularity due to its purported health benefits. ACV is formed from cider or apple must and has a long history as a home remedy, making it the most popular type of vinegar in the natural health community. The following are just a handful of the purported benefits credited to ACV.

1. ACV improves healthy gut flora. Like other fermented foods and beverages (think yogurt and kombucha), ACV is rich in enzymes and probiotics. Probiotics can aid in digestion and make sure that the digestive system is working efficiently. According to the health and wellness team at MyFitnessPal, unpasteurized ACV can deliver probiotics and energize digestion. Others say that ACV can assist with easing an upset stomach by addressing unhealthy bacteria. Some remedies suggest that the pectin in ACV can help soothe intestinal spasms as well.

2. ACV can be used as a disinfectant. ACV and other vinegars can kill harmful bacteria or prevent them from multiplying, according to Healthline. ACV has historically been used as a disinfectant and natural preservative and may help reduce instances of E. coli. Those same antibacterial properties also may help head off infections of the throat. Reader's Digest indicates that gargling with ACV can soothe a sore throat and create an acidic environment in the esophagus that most germs can't survive.

3. ACV contributes to feelings of fullness. Many people insist that ACV helps with weight loss. According to dietician and certified diabetes instructor Katie Rankell at UC Irvine Medical Center, ACV has been shown to lower blood sugar by reducing the absorption of carbohydrates, while also contributing to feelings of fullness that can help people avoid overeating.

4. ACV naturally lowers cholesterol. A recent study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found consumption of the acetic acid found in ACV reduced serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels in rats. More research is needed to determine if humans can reap similar rewards.

5. ACV can treat dandruff and other skin ailments. The acidity of ACV changes the pH of the skin and scalp, making it harder for yeast to grow. Applying ACV to the scalp can inhibit dandruff. It also can be used as a toner that exfoliates the skin and makes it less oily.

Audio Books for Travelers & Book Lovers

A Great Way to Supplement Your Reading.

-------

People who love to read often get lost in a good book. Reading is a beloved hobby across the globe. But even avid readers cannot be immersed in books all of the time , or can they?

Reading while driving or engaging in other tasks is challenging or even dangerous, but audiobooks provide a way to enjoy a good story even when you're otherwise engaged. Though dedicated readers may feel like they're "cheating" by turning to audiobooks, these alternatives to traditional books can be beneficial in various applications, particularly among learning-disabled individuals or second-language learners.

Audiobooks have grown in popularity. Data from the Audio Publishers Association indicates that audiobook sales reached $1.6 billion in 2021 - a 25% jump in one year. That figure supports the notion that audiobooks can provide a host of benefits to people who can't wait to begin their next page turner.

· Improve punctuation and fluency: Audiobooks tend to be read by professional narrators or even well known actors and actresses. Listening to audiobooks can help people learn proper pronunciation of words, how to read with punctuation in mind and also to take notice of speed, stresses and pauses that are important in developing reading fluency.

· Introduce new material: Reading Rockets, a resource for teaching reading, says audiobooks may introduce readers to books above their reading levels or to subjects they may not normally delve into.

· Expand vocabulary: Listening to audiobooks can introduce readers to new words and teach readers how to pronounce unfamiliar dialects or old literary styles.

· Experience vivid images: Audiobooks may evoke feelings of what it was to be read to as a child. According to Psychology Today, listeners can use the narrator's words and form mental pictures of characters and the plot.

· Escapism: Rather than listening to music while commuting, exercising or doing work that doesn't require much concentration, people can use audiobooks to stimulate their minds.

· Relax and relieve stress: Audiobooks can help people feel happy, thus improving their overall health. Relaxing voices and vivid scene descriptions can soothe a person and even help them get ready to sleep.

· Manage time more effectively: A notable benefit of audiobooks is that they can be utilized as people perform other tasks, helping to free up time throughout the rest of the day while still ensuring people get to enjoy a good story.

Audiobooks may be the answer for busy book lovers.

There are scores of spots to visit along the way, including quaint New England fishing villages, historic cities like Princeton or Philadelphia, or beach locales in Miami.
