22nd Anniversary of 9/11

 Never forget.

------

Next Monday marks twenty-two years since the 9-11 attacks.  With the passage of time, it seems inevitable that this solemn day has less emotional impact on the world.  We continue, nevertheless, to call it out here because the events of that day left an indelible mark on the United States and the global community.  It reshaped history and profoundly influenced polices, security measures and international relations.

My wife and I had the occasion to be back in New York several years ago and made it a special point to visit the 9-11 memorial.  It was an extremely emotional day for us, and one that we will always remember.  So, If you feel moved perhaps take a solemn moment before your activities next weekend and pay respects to those souls lost that day.   After all, 22 -years ago on Monday we did promise  to never forget.

Potential Medical Benefits of Meditation

Better focus & less anxiety.

-------

Meditation has long been part of Eastern practices and recommended by alternative health practitioners. With the widespread adoption of yoga, breathing exercises and general mindfulness, meditation has become much more mainstream and something many traditional physicians now recommend to their patients.

According to the yoga equipment supply company Gaiam, meditation is an approach to training the mind that is similar to the way athletes train their bodies. Many meditation techniques exist, and the term meditation refers to an overall discipline rather than one specific activity. People who have been meditating for some time may be able to rest their brains for extended periods of time. Some may need to work up to it. Others practice focus-specific meditation, which makes them focus on a sensation or a particular object to tune out other distractions. Another option is open-monitoring meditation, which involves paying attention to all of one's surroundings. Instead of reacting, you just notice things as they are.

The brand-building company Buffer says that meditation produces measurable changes in the brain. Modern technology like MRI scans show a decrease in beta waves during meditation. Those waves normally indicate that the brain is processing information. Meditation helps to slow or stop that processing.

Meditation has been long studied as a way to induce relaxation and help alleviate stress. In the 1970s, Herbert Benson, MD, a researcher at Harvard University Medical School, coined the term "relaxation response." In Benson's words, this is "an opposite, involuntary response that causes a reduction in the activity of the sympathetic nervous system." Meditation helps achieve that.

Meditation may produce many different health results. Some are immediate, and others are cumulative. Here are some changes a person may see:

· better focus while not meditating

· reduced anxiety

· lower blood pressure

· lower blood cortisol levels

· greater feelings of well-being

· reduced feelings of stress

· ability to cope better with challenging situations

· potential benefits on immune system function

Meditation is a skill someone learns with practice. It's never too early or too late to learn how to meditate. Online courses and neighborhood studios can help people get on the road to wellness through meditation.

Business Etiquette

When is it Okay to Ignore a Text or Email?

by Candace Smith
The Etiquette Blog
Candace Smith Etiquette

Biography:  Candace Smith, wife of Nobel Prize-Winner Professor Dr. Vernon Smith and owner of the extraordinary blog, “Etiquette for the Business of Life” as featured by BBC, Chicago Tribune and USA Today offers her insights.

-------

You might ignore a text or email message that feels unduly confrontive. The sender, noting the lack of response, might clarify. Experience teaches that responding too quickly out of hurt or frustration puts a person in a position of having said something which is later regretted. “Always pause” is a great motto.

In today’s busy, communication-rich environment, immediate responses are not always expected. However, what constitutes “immediately” varies from person to person. When you do decide to respond, the caveat should be, “Sorry for this tardy response.”

An Interesting Phenomenon

Most of us carry phones and notice our messages and email quickly. So, when someone doesn’t respond to a text message you might begin to wonder, and perhaps worry, why. The environment is there to communicate, yet they are not, and the frustration can lead to anxious feelings.

Of course, there are any number of reasons why a person isn’t responding. But if someone chooses to ignore a text or email message from you and it becomes a pattern, it brings into question the type of relationship you have with that person.

Switching the scenario, do you leave others wondering why you haven’t communicated?

Reassessing with Etiquette

Etiquette means that you aim to be relational—you are aware of your interconnectedness with others, engaged, generous, and kind. So, if you decide to ignore a text or email, here are some questions to ask yourself.

  • Why do I want to ignore this text or email?
  • Do I need to change my relationship with this person?
  • Is ignoring the communication etiquette-ful?

Another way to consider how ignoring a message comes across is to change the scenario. If you were passing a friend or acquaintance in a hallway and they asked a question, would you ignore them and keep walking?

Virtual conversations have the same consideration. Responses may be delayed, but a complete lack of response leaves the other person feeling unimportant, or that something is wrong.

If the communication you are receiving is rude or abusive, then you should ignore it. But you will need to consider some type of action to resolve the situation.

Let Etiquette Guide You When You Ignore a Text or Email Message

Being respectfully candid requires employing the realities of etiquette. Etiquette is situational, relational, and contextual. What is the situation? What is my relationship with this person? What are the circumstances that I find myself in? Am I relaying too much in writing and not enough in voice?

We all get busy and let our positive communication skills slip through the cracks. When this happens, own it and let the people you’ve ignored know that you acknowledge the slip. If the written communication is argumentative, acknowledge that you needed a pause so that you could collect your thoughts and formulate your best response.

It may be that what is needed is old-fashioned face-to-face communication. Rather than choosing to completely ignore a text or email message, you might instead write back, “Our communication feels a bit off-track. Maybe we could meet up or talk by phone?”

Re-instating our commitment to etiquette-fulness sets an example to others that civility is not a thin social veneer. It’s the way we want to live and work with others and we should always reassess our communication habits.

Dangers of Dehydration

It can affect anyone at any time.

------

Dehydration is a simple condition to understand, but one that can lead to a host of complicated problems. Many people may be quick to associate dehydration with athletes, particularly those who exercise outdoors in warm climates. But dehydration can affect anyone at any time, which only highlights why men, women and even children should learn to identify signs of dehydration and what to do should it surface.

What is dehydration?

Dehydration happens when the loss of body fluids, namely water, exceeds the amount of fluids that is taken in. When a person is diagnosed as dehydrated, that typically means his or her body has lost so much fluid that is has begun to lose its ability to function normally.

Who is vulnerable to dehydration?

Anyone can suffer from dehydration, which can be especially dangerous to young children and older adults. The Mayo Clinic notes that older adults, who naturally have a lower volume of water in their bodies, may not feel thirsty until they are already dehydrated, so it's important that aging men and women understand that thirst is not always the best indicator that they're becoming dehydrated. Babies may become dehydrated when they get sick with an illness that causes vomiting and diarrhea. But even teens and otherwise healthy adults can suffer from dehydration.

What are the symptoms of dehydration?

Symptoms of dehydration vary with age. Parents of babies and young children should be on the lookout for signs of dehydrations, as infants and even toddlers may not be able to communicate that something is wrong.

Signs of dehydration in infants and young children include dry mouth and tongue, a lack of tears when crying, sunken eyes and cheeks, and a sunken soft spot on the top of the skull. In addition, babies who produce no wet diapers for three hours may be suffering from dehydration. A sense of listlessness or irritability in infants and young children is another potential indicator of dehydration.

Adults who experience extreme thirst may be suffering from dehydration. Less frequent urination and a dark-colored urine when going to the bathroom also is symptomatic of dehydration. Fatigue, dizziness and confusion are some additional indicators of dehydration in adults.

Can dehydration be prevented?

Dehydration can affect anyone, but there are ways to prevent it, even among those people who are especially susceptible to dehydration, such as children and older adults.

Parents of babies who are vomiting or experiencing diarrhea should speak with their pediatricians and discuss the ways to prevent such children from becoming dehydrated. Breastfeeding more frequently and giving the baby a medicine such as Pedialyte® can prevent the occurrence of dehydration in babies who are sick. The Mayo Clinic recommends parents take a proactive approach to preventing dehydration in young children, meaning they should not wait until dehydration occurs or symptoms of dehydration present themselves before taking action.

Adults who want to prevent dehydration should drink plenty of fluids and include lots of fruits and vegetables in their diets. Such foods contain lots of water and can help the body avoid becoming dehydrated.

The Mayo Clinic recommends that athletes begin hydrating the day before engaging in strenuous exercise. A telltale sign of a well-hydrated body is clear, diluted urine. Athletes should replenish their fluids during exercise and continue doing so even after they finish working out or competing.

Older adults should make a concerted effort to drink more fluids when suffering from minor illnesses, which is when such men and women most commonly become dehydrated. Drink extra water when battling influenza, bronchitis or bladder infections, remembering that feelings of thirst often surface only after the body has become dehydrated.

Dehydration is a serious yet preventable threat to men, women and children.

Is Alcohol a Friend or Foe?

The answer is not cut & dry.

-------

Alcohol can be both tonic and poison. Literature suggesting that light to moderate drinking presents a plethora of health benefits can be found if people go looking for it. However, alcohol also has its detractors, who say that the risks outweigh the benefits when it comes to drinking. This makes it even more complicated to decided if consuming alcohol is something that can safely be included in one's lifestyle or if it's something to be avoided.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that alcohol can affect every organ in the body. It is a central nervous system depressant that is rapidly absorbed from the stomach and small intestine into the bloodstream. The Mayo Clinic advises that moderate alcohol consumption may provide some health benefits. These can include reducing risk of developing and dying from heart disease. There's a possible reduction in the risk of ischemic stroke, which occurs when the arteries to the brain narrow or become blocked, impacting blood flow. Some think that moderate alcohol consumption may reduce one's risk of diabetes.

The Harvard Medical School indicates that moderate drinking protecting against cardiovascular disease and diabetes makes sense biologically and scientifically. Moderate amounts of alcohol raise levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or "good" cholesterol), and higher HDL levels are associated with greater protection against heart disease. Moderate alcohol consumption has also been linked with beneficial changes ranging from greater sensitivity to insulin to improvements in factors that influence blood clotting.

Alcohol has a dark side, too. Its most pronounced issue is the toll it can take on the liver. Heavy alcohol use can cause inflammation or scarring of the liver. The World Cancer Research Fund also ties alcohol to cancers of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, breast, liver, colon, and rectum. People who cannot control their drinking can develop addictions that affect both their personal and professional lives.

Moderation is essential when consuming alcohol. Those who do not currently drink are not advised to do so just for the potential health benefits. However, people who have one to two drinks (12 ounces of beer, eight ounces of malt liquor, five ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of liquor) on a regular basis and are healthy overall should generally have few problems, according to the Mayo Clinic. Still, it is always best to consult with a physician about alcohol consumption and its potential effects on one's overall health.

College Football is Back

Saturday's top games this year.

-------

College football season is upon us and is an exciting time for sports fans. Each weekend from late summer into early December, teams from across the country lock horns hoping to qualify for the season-ending playoff, which begins on January 1 and culminates with the national championship game on January 8. Between now and then, college football fans can feast on these highly anticipated matchups on the docket for the 2023 season.

· Ohio State at Notre Dame, September 23: This matchup of midwestern powerhouse programs in week 4 of the college football season kicks off under the lights at historic Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana. Ohio State is a preseason national championship contender, while Notre Dame will begin the season ranked thirteenth in the preseason poll.

· USC at Oregon, November 11: USC's pending departure for the Big Ten conference in 2024 means this clash of longtime Pac-12 rivals will likely pack a little extra punch in 2023. That the matchup occurs in week 11 also figures to add to the drama, as both teams could be fighting to earn a spot in the end-of-season playoff by the time this one kicks off in mid-November. Fans of great quarterback play also won't be disappointed with this matchup, which features reigning Heisman Trophy winner (and preseason Heisman favorite) Caleb Williams under center for USC and the versatile Bo Nix taking snaps for the Ducks.

· Georgia at Tennessee, November 18: Another late-season matchup with potential playoff implications, this dual between two Southeastern Conference powerhouses could go a long way toward determining if the two-time defending champion Bulldogs can win their third straight national championship. It will be a tall order for the Volunteers, but they'll make their case in front of what figures to be a raucous crowd of Tennessee faithful at Neyland Stadium.

· Oklahoma at Oklahoma State, November 4: Tensions figure to be high in this rivalry matchup known simply as "Bedlam." Oklahoma is set to depart for the SEC after the 2023 season, which means this year's installment of a rivalry that dates all the way back to 1904 could be the final chapter. That figures to add to the emotion in Stillwater on the first weekend in November, making this among the most notable dates to circle on the 2023 college football calendar.

Top Reasons to Own a Swiss Trust Company in 2023!

Please note that additional licensing may be required depending upon new ownership’s business objectives and activities.

1. Eastern European Business Owners: To seek sanctuary from political uncertainty.
2. US Real Estate Developers: To raise & manage capital from private overseas investors to fund real estate development in the United States. Also applies to similar industries.
3.Wealthy Families or Business Partners: To use as a management tool to protect, invest and consolidate wealth by warehousing assets and segregating interests via mandate for reinvestment reflecting differing tolerance to risk.
4. South African Business Owners: Manage international profits in response to government currency controls in country of origin. Also applies to other countries with similar restrictions in place.
5. Financial Services: To use as an alternative to owning a “Captive Bank” or Class B Bank. The cost of time and money to establish ownership of bank has soared while profit multiples have plummeted. Thus, a Swiss Trust Company can be an attractive alternative for international business.
6. Internet Based Business Owners: Enhance corporate profile while at the same time establishing a quality European beachhead with an outstanding professional network of attorneys and bankers.
7. Import Industry & Shipping Industry: Control transactions more efficiently and establish true corresponding bank relationships.
