October Stock Market Crashes

History can be a painful teacher.

------

On Black Monday in 1987, I was working as a young stockbroker at Kidder Peabody & Company and had the chore of reporting markets for a local radio station that day.  50,000 Watts from 1250 AM WTAE in Pittsburgh echoed with my voice recounting the losses of that bleak day.

Black Monday refers to the stock market crash that occurred on October 19, 1987. It was one of the most significant single-day stock market drops in history. On that day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) fell by a staggering 22.6%, which remains the largest one-day percentage loss in the history of the DJIA.

The causes of Black Monday were complex and debated among economists and financial experts. Some contributing factors included computerized trading, program trading, and concerns about rising interest rates. The crash had a global impact, leading to stock market declines in other countries.

The event had a lasting impact on financial markets, leading to changes in trading practices and the implementation of circuit breakers to halt trading during extreme market volatility. It also served as a reminder of the potential for rapid and severe market fluctuations.

October can be tough on the stock market.  Known as the “October Effect,” it is the perception that stocks tend to decline during October.   It is considered by many to be an investor psychological hurdle rather than a statistic phenomenon.  In any case, it is something that can have real outcomes and worth being aware of should markets start dramatic price swings. From my person experience,  I can assure you that it felt very real.

The Power of Laughter

A good chuckle protects your workday.

-------

A good joke can liven up any social engagement, but the value of humor goes well beyond breaking the ice at parties and other get-togethers. According to the Cleveland Clinic, laughter can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps to lower heart rate and help people breathe more easily. Given such benefits, it's no surprise that laughter has been linked to a host of medical benefits, including stress relief and improved heart health.

Various professionals have studied the clinical benefits of laughter, including Dr. Lee Berk and Dr. Stanley Tan at Loma Linda University in California. Here is what these experts say in regard to the benefits of a few good belly laughs.

Boosts immune system

A recent study titled "The Laughter Prescription" and published in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine found that the amount of laughter a person experiences is related to the immune system's ability to fight off infections, among other benefits. The study references additional research that indicated spontaneous (not forced) laughter boosts the immune system by increasing natural killer (NK) cell activity. Levels were measured after participants watched a one-hour humorous video. NK cells are lymphocytes with a unique ability to kill a broad spectrum of cancerous and virus-infected cells, according to the National Institutes of Health. Laughing out loud improves immune system function and increases heart rate and oxygen levels.

Lowers blood pressure

Individuals who laugh often have lower blood pressure than those who laugh less often. Lower blood pressure reduces the risk for stroke and heart attack.

Helps heal the brain

Laughing can help reverse symptoms of grief or depression by increasing the pleasure-enhancing neurochemicals in the brain, according to the Dr. Sears Wellness Institute. A good laugh also may help people recovering from chronic illnesses by helping to alleviate fear and anxiety that could otherwise preoccupy the mind.

Suppresses stress hormones

Drs. Berk and Tan found that the stress hormones epinephrine and cortisol decrease following laughter. Laughter may help people feel less stressed and overwhelmed.

Provides a small body workout

Hearty laughter can exercise the diaphragm, contract the abdominals and even work the shoulders and muscles in the face. Laughter also gets the heart pumping at a rate that burns a similar amount of calories per hour as walking slowly.

Provides natural pain relief

Research suggests that laughter decreases inflammation that may contribute to pain. Researchers at the University of Maryland found that laughing also increases blood flow, which may help to reduce pain as well.

Finding ways to laugh more is an easy and fun way to improve overall health

How to Properly Eat Spaghetti

by Candace Smith
The Etiquette Blog
Candace Smith Etiquette

Biography:  Candace Smith, wife of Nobel Prize-Winner Professor Dr. Vernon Smith and owner of the extraordinary blog, “Etiquette for the Business of Life” as featured by BBC, Chicago Tribune and USA Today offers her insights.

-------

Every youngster knows how to eat spaghetti.  Just place the tips of a few strands in your mouth and slurp them in.  And who cares if you get sauce all over your face, your clothes, or the table.

Very fun and entertaining!  Until you're old enough to begin caring about your appearance.

Which is why many adults dismiss spaghetti - it becomes a messy, difficult food to eat.  Not the best choice when wearing shirt and tie.

But help is here!

There is an appropriate method for eating spaghetti that (most often) prevents you from wearing it along with your professional attire.

How to Eat Spaghetti:  The Two-step Method

Select only a few spaghetti strands at the edges of the mound.
Wind them on the fork against the plate.

When you achieve a half-inch overhang off the edge of the fork, move this modest bite toward your mouth.

If the overhang is too long, it becomes difficult to get the entire bite into your mouth with one movement.

Uh-oh Spaghetti!
The two steps above are simple and clear.  But if they are not precisely followed, here’s where things can go wrong:

If you place your fork in the middle of the spaghetti mound, you will invariably wind too much.
In the company of others, shoving a "too big" bite like this into your mouth can only end in disaster.

Cutting your spaghetti produces slippery bites that fall off your fork.

You'll create a distracting mess on your plate, and quite possibly put your white shirt in grave danger.

If you are in extreme distress, use a spoon to help balance the spaghetti strands so that you can easily wind them onto your fork.

Just remember:  this method is not the norm, and not generally considered proper.

Enjoy!
There's nothing inappropriate about enjoying your food, and even having fun with it.  But knowing how to eat spaghetti properly keeps the fun from getting a little too crazy.

It also helps you save on your cleaning bill.

Healthy Foods that Provide Feeling of Fullness

A variety of healthy foods.

------

Hunger is one of the more common issues individuals encounter when transitioning to a nutritious diet. Many people aspire to eat healthier in an effort to lose weight gained due to overeating. That can make the adjustment more difficult, as individuals are accustomed to eating to a point of fullness. But there's good news for people in that situation, as a variety of healthy foods can provide a feeling of fullness and put an end to between-meal hunger pangs.

· Water: Water may not be food, but drinking more of it can provide a feeling of fullness that people are accustomed to. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics notes that symptoms of mild dehydration often present as feelings of hunger. In addition, the PKD Foundation reports that clinical studies have found that 37 percent of people mistake thirst for hunger because signals that indicate thirst are weak. Dry eyes, feeling sluggish, increased heart, and headache are some potential warning signs of thirst. So when mid-afternoon hunger pangs hit, try drinking some water before reaching for a snack.

· Vegetables: One of the misconceptions concerning food and fullness is that low-calorie foods are unlikely to fill up the proverbial tank. That's not true, and vegetables are a testament to how filling certain low-calorie foods can be. According to the Mayo Clinic, most vegetables are low in calories but high in volume or weight. That means they can contribute to feelings of fullness without compromising individuals' efforts to eat healthy.

· Baked potatoes: Nearly 30 years ago, researchers at the University of Sydney in Australia developed a satiety index in an effort to measure how effective certain foods were at helping people feel full. No food finished with a higher satiety ranking than baked potatoes. That's good news for individuals looking to transition to a nutritious diet, as baked potatoes without any added butter or other toppings are low in sodium and do not contain any cholesterol. Baked potatoes also are a good source of vitamin C and dietary fiber. Buttering a baked potato can compromise its nutritional value, so consider sprinkling pepper in place of butter if you need some additional flavor.

· Pulses: One thing to look for to overcome hunger pangs while trying to eat healthy is slowly digested foods. Pulses fit that bill. Carbs that the body does not digest quickly can help individuals avoid hunger pangs, and pulses are slow to digest. Beans, lentils and peas are some examples of pulses. Adding pulses to salads or even using pulses like lentils as the foundation for a salad is a great way to eat healthy and avoid hunger.

Hunger pangs can compromise a healthy diet. Thankfully, many healthy foods pack a nutritional punch and provide a feeling of fullness that can reduce the likelihood of potentially harmful between-meal snacking.

The Beer of Oktoberfest

Märzenbier which means March Beer.

-------

Märzenbier, which means "March beer," refers to specific types of beers brewed during a certain time of year. Historians say that roughly 500 years ago Bavarian brewers kept to a strict brewing schedule in the winter and spring to take advantage of cool temperatures that would keep spoilage of brews to a minimum without refrigeration. The final brews of the year were made in March and had a higher alcohol and hop content. These beers were enjoyed throughout the summer, and whatever märzens were left would have to be consumed by the fall to free up casks for the next round of grain and brewing. Throwing a large party to clear out the beer stock seemed a natural solution.

Märzenbiers were initially dark brown in color and full-bodied, though over time they have evolved. According to Brewer World, most modern märzens have a deep gold-copper hue, great clarity and a persistent head. The beer gives off an aroma of caramel and toasted malt. It is a crisp and clean lager that balances the sweetness of the malt with the bitterness of the hops.

Märzens are now brewed in various regions and will vary depending on where they were brewed. In Vienna, märzens evolved as ales, while Munich produces lagers. German varieties can range from pale to amber and dark brown. Austrian styles are generally lighter in body, color and flavor.

German märzens are traditional for Oktoberfest celebrations. Six breweries in Munich are responsible for producing märzenbier for the festivities. These include Augustiner-Bräu, Hacker-Pschorr-Bräu, Löwenbräu, Paulaner-Bräu, Spatenbräu, and Staatliches Hofbräu-München. The beers are produced according to the rigid constraints set up by the Edict of Purity (Reinheitsgebot).

The Origins of Oktoberfest!

Oktoberfest 2023 is happening now.

-------

Oktoberfest is a celebration that transcends geographical boundaries. Much like people in various pockets of the globe celebrate St. Patrick's Day and Cinco de Mayo even if they have little or no connection to Ireland or Mexico, respectively, Bavarian heritage is not a prerequisite for participation in Oktoberfest revelry.

According to Oktoberfest.de, each year millions of people are attracted to the festival of Oktoberfest. It's not hard to see why so many people attend Oktoberfest, which is synonymous with fun, food, music, and, of course, beer. But the chance to engage in what might be best characterized as living history undoubtedly is part of the appeal of Oktoberfest as well. Oktoberfest is indeed steeped in tradition, and understanding the history of the beloved festival can make the celebration even more enjoyable.

The first Oktoberfest occurred as part of a wedding. Kronprinz Ludwig of Bavaria, who later became King Ludwig I, was set to marry Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen on October 12, 1810. The couple's nuptials were deemed a cause for great celebration, and a horse race was held in their honor on October 17. The inspiration for the races and the subsequent celebration of Oktoberfest remains a topic of debate. But there's no debating that Ludwig's decision to invite the people of Munich to join in the festivities had a lasting effect, inspiring many of the city's wealthiest residents to decorate the city. But even the less well-to-do joined in the celebrations. In fact, according to Oktoberfest-guide.com, 32,065 buns; 3,922 pounds of swiss cheese; 400 kilos of mutton; 8,120 cervelat sausages; and 13,300 pairs of smoked sausage were distributed for free. Alcohol and music also featured prominently during the inaugural Oktoberfest, as 232 hectoliters of beer and four hectoliters of Austrian white wine were served during a celebration that also featured 150 musicians.

Though the festive atmosphere of Oktoberfest is known across the globe, the celebration has not been without its tragic moments. For example, Oktoberfest 1980 was shaken by a bomb that exploded at the festival entrance on September 25. Thirteen people were killed and more than 200 were injured, and the bombing remains under investigation more than 40 years later. World wars also affected the beloved festival, which was suspended between 1914 to 1918 due to World War I and then again from 1939 to 1945 due to World War II. The years immediately following both wars also featured toned down events that were not characterized as Oktoberfest but rather autumn celebrations. Celebrations in 2020 and 2021 were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Oktoberfest remains a popular celebration more than 200 years after the inaugural event. Though devotees insist nothing can match the annual celebration in Munich, those who can't make it to Germany can likely find some Oktoberfest festivities close to home, wherever that home happens to be.
