Nancy Wants to Fix Capitalism

Last week Nancy Pelosi the current Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, third in line to the Presidency, said that she wants to fix capitalism.  Her party owns a very slim majority in the House and the Senate is split 50-50.  So, there is no vast majority mandate from the American people and yet she is suggesting that our entire economic system needs changed or at least fixed.  Perhaps worst of all this statement was barely covered by the press.  Ms. Pelosi represents the San Francisco area of California.  Have you recently been to the City By the Bay?   If anyone thinks "Woke Capitalism" will work then a trip to this once beautiful and iconic city would be in order.

Confidence Over Arrogance

“Real humility is when I can treat a minister, a prince, a priest, a waiter and a janitor with the same and equal respect.”    -  -Jeroninio Almeida

Although John McEnroe, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, and Bjorn Borg will go down in history as some of the greatest men’s professional tennis players of all time, their playing styles and demeaner were all very different. When I hear the name John McEnroe, I immediately get an image of an awesome tennis player that lost his temper when a call didn’t go his way and seemed to have an arrogant attitude. When I hear the name Roger Federer, I also get the image of an awesome tennis player that had a very even temperament and always seemed confident and in control. While McEnroe was always fun to watch, Federer had a much more likeable personality. While you might root for Federer to win, you might also root for McEnroe to lose.

The same holds true for managers and leaders. While different leadership styles work, which person would you work the hardest for? The arrogant leader or the confident leader? I am guessing the answer would be he confident leader. Although confidence and arrogance can share similar qualities, such as, being assertive and speaking your mind, there are many key qualities that separate their level of success. To better understand the differences, lets look at the qualities of each.

Arrogant Leaders

  • Often stem from being insecure and they have the need to feel superior.
  • They view colleagues as stupid or incompetent.
  • They are often closed off to new ideas because they think they know it all.
  • They typically over promise and under deliver.
Confident Leaders
  • Enjoy new experiences and learning from them.
  • Have a good self-esteem.
  • Encourage employees to perform their best.
  • Assertive and humble.
  • Inspire confidence in employees’ abilities.

People that are in a leadership position are in that position because they are smart and have shown the ability to be successful. I wonder how many more matches John McEnroe would have won if he showed more confidence than arrogance. The ability to treat everyone with respect and make them feel valued is a quality that is priceless. The quality of people that you will attract to work with you will result in a company that is innovative and successful.

Sportradar AG is a multinational corporation with headquarters in St. Gallen, Switzerland, that collects and analyzes sports data. Sportradar provides services to bookmakers, national and international sports federations, and media companies.   It employs more than 2,300 full time employees across 19 countries around the world.  This Swiss based company powers some of the highest-trafficked media sites, fantasy sports apps, innovative brand activations and sports analytics platforms. We thought it noteworthy since both Michael Jordon and Mark Cuban have reportedly quietly taken positions and become involved with this company.

Is There a Place for Small Talk
During Virtual Meetings?

 by Candace Smith
The Etiquette Blog
Candace Smith Etiquette

Small talk during virtual meetings – or any meeting – is the meet and greet phase of a conversation.  It helps find something in common, something on which to build the remainder of your time together.  It’s all about “breaking the ice,” about getting acquainted, or reacquainted.

I recently received an email from someone who wished to discuss small talk during virtual meetings.  She made two important observations about the subject:

  • “It can seem rude, when on a virtual screen, one or two participants are engaging in small talk but not everyone is included.
  • “Because people spend so much time in virtual space, small talk can feel like a waste of time.”

Her points are well-taken.  In the greeting phase of a virtual meeting, if the chit-chat between two people turns into a three-minute side conversation, others can feel excluded and annoyed that it takes up the scheduled meeting time.

So why do people need small talk?  Dr. Carol Fleming, a communications author and coach, states it well.
“The purpose of small talk as we know it, is to send out the signal, ‘Will you be a friend to me?’ But we do it in disguise.  We do it in code.  We do it in a secret language, where we say, ‘Lovely day today, isn’t it?’”

Timing is Important

Before the noted start time, as people begin to filter into the meeting, it’s common and fun to exchange pleasantries with the “What have you been up to?” questions.  As the meeting comes into focus, small talk ends.
If the meeting leader so designates, some virtual meetings extend into “after hours” and a few people resume small talk unrelated to the meeting.  Yes, “Tell me more about the earthquake you just experienced during our meeting!” makes for interesting small talk.  (This actually happened during a recent virtual conference in which I participated!)

Depending on the purpose and size of in-person meetings, it’s customary to visit before the meeting begins.  And now virtually, some organizations and meeting leaders build these moments into the agenda to help people relax a little.  A moment of casual chit-chat can be vital in setting a friendly tone for the business at hand.

Appropriate Small Talk During Virtual Meetings

One primary difference in virtual and in-person meetings is that side conversations can be kept private by whispering or moving away from others when you are gathered in a conference room.  But on-screen, anyone can overhear what is said.

Adjusting small talk from an in-person format to a virtual format involves remembering these four guidelines:
  • Keep it short, especially if it doesn’t involve everyone currently on-screen.
  • Limit it to a friendly observation.
  • Ask a question that doesn't require a deep answer; the answer will be informational and not too personal.
  • Look at your camera rather than the screen in an effort to establish eye contact with other participants.

A suggestion from the person who emailed me was, “Maybe we should change the whole process to something other than ‘small talk’.  Maybe just ‘meet and greet.’”  Whatever label we give it, the goal is to engage participants and set a positive tone for a successful meeting.

As we continue building bridges, helping others feel welcome, setting a positive tone often begins with our willingness to warm up with small talk during virtual meetings.  It really can be helpful, particularly in a virtual format in which not everyone is used to feeling comfortable.

How to Design a Home Gym

Exercise is often a social activity, but in the wake of social distancing guidelines issue in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, many people have found themselves looking for ways to exercise at home. People exercise for many different reasons. Exercise can improve one's appearance, reduce the risk for illness, alleviate stress or anxiety, and even help pass some time.

Building a home fitness room has never been a more timely project, and such a project can continue to provide rewards even when life returns to some semblance of normalcy. Here's how to successfully stock a home gym.

· Find a dedicated space. A home gym will be limited by the amount of space that can be devoted to workouts. Possible fitness room locations include a spare bedroom, a garage, a basement, or an enclosed patio. Measure the space so you can pick and choose equipment that will fit. Leave some floor space empty for movement exercises or mat activities.

· Keep the space bright. Darkness can sap energy levels, so invest in mirrors and adequate overhead lighting to make the space inviting. Natural light can make the exercise area more enjoyable.

· Consider the flooring. New flooring can protect against damage and make an area more conductive to working out. Rubber mats can offset echoes and reduce the noise of running on a treadmill or setting down heavy weights.

· Use space-saving equipment. A home gym space will likely not be as expansive as the space inside a traditional fitness center. Thankfully, many activities do not require a lot of space or equipment. Classic exercises like squats, lunges, push ups, and sit ups require little gear but still produce results. Figure out which equipment you like the most and invest in two or three key pieces. Dumbells of various weights, a medicine ball and a yoga mat can be all you need to create a versatile, effective workout. A TRX system and a door-mounted pull-up bar also are great space-saving options.

· Have a TV hookup. A home gym may benefit from a smart TV that you can use to stream workout videos or catch up on the latest news while running the treadmill or using the stationary bike.

A home gym is beneficial year-round, and can be especially valuable when social distancing guidelines are put in place.

Oktoberfest 2021

Oktoberfest is a German celebration that begins in late September and continues into the first week of October. The first Oktoberfest took place as part of the wedding reception for Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. It has since grown into a 16- to 18-day folk festival that typically attracts millions of visitors to Germany every year.

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, Oktoberfest will not take place in 2021. But that doesn't mean celebrants will have to skip all Oktoberfest customs. One of the hallmarks of Oktoberfest is a specific style of beer called märzenbier, also known as Oktoberfest beer.

Märzenbier, which means "March beer," refers to specific types of beers brewed during a certain time of year. Historians say that roughly 500 years ago Bavarian brewers kept to a strict brewing schedule in the winter and spring to take advantage of cool temperatures that would keep spoilage of brews to a minimum without refrigeration. The final brews of the year were made in March and had a higher alcohol and hop content. These beers were enjoyed throughout the summer, and whatever märzens were left would have to be consumed by the fall to free up casks for the next round of grain and brewing. Throwing a large party to clear out the beer stock seemed a natural solution.

Märzenbiers were initially dark brown in color and full-bodied, though over time they have evolved. According to Brewer World, most modern märzens have a deep gold-copper hue, great clarity and a persistent head. The beer gives off an aroma of caramel and toasted malt. It is a crisp and clean lager that balances the sweetness of the malt with the bitterness of the hops.

Märzens are now brewed in various regions and will vary depending on where they were brewed. In Vienna, märzens evolved as ales, while Munich produces lagers. German varieties can range from pale to amber and dark brown. Austrian styles are generally lighter in body, color and flavor.

German märzens are traditional for Oktoberfest celebrations. Six breweries in Munich are responsible for producing märzenbier for the festivities. These include Augustiner-Bräu, Hacker-Pschorr-Bräu, Löwenbräu, Paulaner-Bräu, Spatenbräu, and Staatliches Hofbräu-München. The beers are produced according to the rigid constraints set up by the Edict of Purity (Reinheitsgebot).

Oktoberfest may be a bit different this year, but märzen beer can still be part of the festivities.

Enjoy the Leaves of Autumn 2021

Millions of people each year look forward to the magnificent colors on display in autumn. Fall offers irreplaceable views, whether you're atop a mountain ridge or thick in the folds of a forest. In addition, the crackle of leaves underfoot and the earthy smell of the soil tempts the senses even more. In 2020,  many will be hitting the road in search of beautiful distractions from the ever-present news of politics and pandemic.  Therefore, some advance planning can help make fall foliage trips that much more enjoyable and awe-inspiring.

Peak viewing times

Areas of the northern-most latitude will start to show color earlier than more southern areas. Generally speaking, the leaf-viewing season begins in late September and runs through early November for much of North America. Peak times for viewing depend on areas of travel and time of year. For large swaths of Canada and the United States, plan trips for late-September to mid-October. The Weather Channel offers maps and charts at www.weather.com/maps/fall-foliage  for the peak times for many areas of the U.S.

Pick your destination

Anywhere with deciduous trees provides the opportunity to witness blazing autumn color. During leaf-peeping season, travelers can go coast to coast and see awesome vistas. Some regions are particularly known for their leaf displays. New York's Catskill and Adirondack regions are prime spots for visitors in the autumn. Those who live further north will find that leaves in Vermont are such an attraction that routes are published indicating where to enjoy the best views. Further south, Central and Eastern Virginia peak in late October. And don't forget the shores of the Great Lakes, which are awash in reds, oranges and yellows by mid-September. The travel resource Frommer's offers more leaf-peeping locales to visit.

Pack the right gear

While most people are not without a smartphone that can capture amazing high-resolution imagery, serious leaf photographers may want to take out their prized camera equipment for leaf-peeping excursions. Also bring along a map or a GPS-enabled device so you can explore back roads and areas off the beaten path more readily.

There are plenty of apps that can help with foliage-finding adventures, so a phone is a handy tool. When packing, also bring along hiking boots, comfortable layered clothing and any equipment you'd normally take for an afternoon in the great outdoors.

Another idea is to hit the ATM machine prior to the visit. Many smaller towns and their local shops may not take credit cards, so it's best to have cash on hand for food and souvenirs.

Extend the day

Make leaf-peeping part of a larger series of events for the day. Scope out vineyards where you can sample local wines or plan trips around orchards, where you can come home with beautiful photos as well as fresh-picked apples and pumpkins. You may find a county fair or street festival while exploring

Investment:
Swiss Trust Companies are available for an initial investment ranging from $70,000 to $150,000. The average client invests approximately $100,000 to acquire their company. Your outlay will increase with the age of the structure since older companies are more difficult to locate. As a rule of thumb, older Trust Companies are more appropriate for clients who wish to make their STC acquisition an operational non-banking financial entity. This type of business model typically involves portfolio management or some other activity involving third parties. The age and established corporate goodwill are also of major importance when establishing corresponding banking relationships. If a client, however, is looking to benefit from owning a Swiss Trust Company solely for asset protection, then a younger company would be more appropriate and thus require a smaller investment.

Our Service & Experience:
- Experience: More than 25 years involvement with successful STC acquisitions.
Neutrality: If there is a better option for your business plans you will be guided in that direction.
Education: Professional and dependable source of information.
