Time to Diversify

 The time is now.

------

If you are like me, you find it hard to watch the news.  Political instability is everywhere with some of the world’s most hypocritical people holding public office. It seems that the pursuit of power and influence can tempt many politicians to compromise their ethical standards in the hope of gaining an advantage or maintaining  their position. Financial incentives, lack of accountability and pressure from special interest groups  are also contributing to an environment of unethical behavior.

May I suggest that instead of feeling hopeless and vulnerable to the next radical fade, consider placing some of your business or personal assets in an environment of stability and appreciation.   It’s not just in the United States, many other countries are experiencing political strife. Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Mexico, Canada, Australia, New Zealand to name just a few have major political concerns which are either related to post-COID or other major economic concerns.

It’s time to diversify.

For anyone who is a regular reader of this column, you would most likely know that our jurisdiction of choice for the last 25 years has been Switzerland.  Today, that position stands firm and has been enhanced by legislation over the recent years which includes the new “Swiss Light Banking License” and business-friendly regulation surrounding the Crypto Currency sector.  Long gone are the illusions of numbered accounts and hidden money often promoted in movies.  Switzerland is one of the world’s largest financial centers with a sophisticated infrastructure and where language is almost never a challenge since English, French, German, and Italian are commonly spoken.  It is a stunningly beautiful location offering asset protection and a potential European flagship for profit.

If you are concerned about the future, now would be the time to move part of your assets in this direction while still meeting all your reporting requirements at home.

Switzerland is considered a good place for business due to several
key factors:

1. Political Stability: Switzerland has a long history of political stability, which is crucial for businesses looking to invest in a secure environment.

2. Strong Economy:  It boasts a strong and diverse economy with a high GDP per capita, making it an attractive market for businesses.

3. Business-Friendly Regulations: Switzerland has a favorable regulatory environment with low taxes, transparent regulations, and protection of property rights, making it conducive for businesses to thrive.

4. Skilled Workforce:  The country has a highly educated and skilled workforce, making it easier for businesses to find qualified employees.

5. Infrastructure: Switzerland has excellent infrastructure, including transportation, communication, and technology, facilitating efficient business operations.

6. Access to Markets:  It offers access to both European and global markets due to its central location in Europe.

7. Innovation Hub:  Switzerland is known for its innovation and research, particularly in sectors like pharmaceuticals, finance, and technology.

8. Financial Center:
Zurich is a renowned global financial hub with a well-developed banking sector and access to international capital.

9. Quality of Life:  Switzerland offers an exceptional quality of life, making it attractive for expatriate employees and their families.

10. Legal System:  The country has a reliable and impartial legal system, ensuring the protection of contracts and intellectual property.

11. Multilingual Environment:  Switzerland's multilingual population and business environment are beneficial for international companies.

12. Tax Treaties:  Switzerland has a network of double taxation treaties, reducing tax-related barriers for international businesses.

These factors collectively contribute to Switzerland's reputation as a favorable destination for businesses to establish and grow.

Mental Health Issues that Affect Men

Less likely to seek help.

-------

Studies have shown that men have historically been less likely to report mental health issues than women. Lower rates of self-reporting among men may be attributable to a number of factors, including the stigma that's still attached to the issue of mental health.

Mental health issues can affect all aspects of a person's life, and if left untreated, these issues can have grave consequences. Men are not immune to those consequences. In fact, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates age-adjusted suicide rates are substantially higher among men than women. Among men, that rate is 14 per 100,000, which is more than twice as high as the rate among women (6.1 per 100,000).

There's no formula to identify which men will develop a mental health issue or which condition they might experience. But it's worth noting some of the more common mental health issues and equally important that all men recognize these issues can affect any man at any time.

Anxiety

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services notes that anxiety disorders affect roughly 20 percent of the adult population in the United States each year. Similarly, Statistics Canada notes that a screening in spring 2021 found that 15 percent of Canadians screened positive for generalized anxiety disorder. Anxiety is an umbrella term that alludes to a number of issues that each produce their own symptoms and side effects, but the DHHS notes that anxiety disorders are marked by feelings of fear and uncertainty that interfere with everyday activities. These feelings persist for six months or more and can increase a person's risk for heart disease, diabetes, substance abuse, and depression.

Depression

The World Health Organization reports that roughly 5 percent of the global adult population suffers from depression. Depression is more than the feelings of sadness that everyone experiences from time to time. The National Institute of Mental Health notes that depression produces persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety or an "empty" mood. Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism are some additional characteristics of depression. It's important to recognize that these symptoms must be persistent. Symptoms that persist for at least two weeks and interfere with a person's ability to work, sleep, study, and eat may indicate major depression, while less severe symptoms that last for at least two years suggest the presence of persistent depressive disorder.

Substance Use Disorder

The National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics has identified substance use disorder as a public health emergency. Statistics support that assertion, as data from the National Center for Health Statistics indicates more than 20 million Americans ages 12 and over are affected by a substance use disorder. Statistics Canada indicates that around six million Canadians will meet the criteria for addiction in their lifetime. Though anyone, including children, can develop substance use disorder, a 2016 report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration indicated that men have higher rates of use or dependence on illicit drugs and alcohol than women. The National Institutes of Health notes that substance use disorder affects a person's brain and behavior, which makes them incapable of controlling their use of substances, including medication and alcohol.

Men are no less vulnerable to mental health issues than women. The NIMH urges individuals in crisis or people who suspect someone is in crisis to call 911 or to call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988. More information about mental health can be found at nimh.nih.gov.

Business Perspective

The Importance of "Small" Business

Facts & figures for U.S. and Canada.

-------

Though they might be characterized as "small," businesses with fewer than 500 employees have a big impact on the economy. According to the World Bank, small and medium enterprises represent roughly 90 percent of businesses and more than 50 percent of employment worldwide. A weakened small business sector could put the local, national and even global economy in jeopardy, which further underscores how vital small firms are to global economic stability.

Statistics don't tell the whole story about small businesses, but they can offer valuable insight into just how vital firms with 500 employees or fewer are. The similarity of figures in the United States and Canada supports that notion, as data from both countries reveals how integral each nation's small business sector is to its economic vitality.

· Data from the Small Business Administration indicates there were 33.2 million small businesses in operation in the United States as of 2022. Numbers are equally high in Canada, where the Government of Canada reports that, among the 1.21 million employer firms, 1.19 million are small businesses.

· The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that small businesses created 12.9 million net new jobs between 1996 and 2021. The Government of Canada reports that, between 2020 and 2021, small businesses were responsible for 69 percent of the net employment change between 2020 and 2021.

· Despite their importance to local, national and global economies, a high percentage of small businesses close within their first year of opening. The BLS reports that around 20 percent of small businesses in the United States close within a year of opening. Figures are similar in Canada, with estimates suggesting 21.5 percent of small businesses fold before the end of their first year.

· Statistics Canada reports that small businesses employed 63.8 percent of the Canadian workforce in 2021. That percentage is lower in the United States, where the SBA reports that 61.7 million Americans, which equates to 46.4 percent of private sector employees, are employed by small businesses.

· BLS data indicates that just under 35 percent of small businesses that opened in 2012 remained in operation upon their tenth anniversary in 2022. The Business Development Bank of Canada reports that nearly 68 percent of new businesses in Canada remain in operation after five years, though the organization Made in Canada reports that figure drops to around 33 percent after a decade.

Data supports the notion that small businesses are the lifeblood not only of local and national economies, but even the global economy. Such figures underscore the importance of shopping small businesses and the significance of ensuring such firms thrive for years to come

Time Management & Etiquette

by Candace Smith
The Etiquette Blog
Candace Smith Etiquette

Biography:  Candace Smith, wife of Nobel Prize-Winner Professor Dr. Vernon Smith and owner of the extraordinary blog, “Etiquette for the Business of Life” as featured by BBC, Chicago Tribune and USA Today offers her insights.

-------

Regardless of your age or profession, time management helps in living a rewarding life. When you are etiquette-ful, others take you seriously and are comfortable around you. Being mindful of your and others’ time is a major responsibility when aiming for success.

The Time is Now

Everyone wishes there were more time, and of course we don’t know what the future will bring.  But we are here now, and this moment will never come again.  Being mindful that time is scarce and that we only get so much of it can be an inspiration to make time your friend.

You might think, “Managing time leads to mindfulness?”  It’s true, even though it sounds paradoxical.  Enjoying our lives, getting work done, planning for the future, taking care of business, the house, kids, pets, can feel overwhelming if lumped together in the mind.

That’s why we need to have a plan, a timeline, to manage our moments and avoid distractions that can ruin the closing thoughts of the day and keep us from meeting goals in tune with our priorities.  In the words of Benjamin Franklin, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”

However, it’s difficult to plan your time when you aren’t certain of your priorities. The busy-ness of life can sometime cloud our priorities because we tend to prioritize in the moment. Whatever squeaks, squeals, or screams the loudest, becomes our current priority at the time.

But if you can generalize your priorities, and focus on them in every moment, you always know what you’re working towards.  This keeps you focused so that when something distracts you, you can more easily decide if it deserves your attention.

What are your priorities right now?

  • Ask yourself, “What is most important and meaningful in my life today that I am not willing to compromise or sacrifice in pursuit of something else?”
  • Write down your top three things and place them where you can see them several times a day as a reminder.
Practical Scheduling for Time Management
Even with a priority list firmly in mind, attention to time management with a daily to-do list helps keep us in balance.
  • Be deliberate with goals coming from your priorities and what you need to do to meet them.  Having a realistic expectation of what it takes helps map out a practical timeline for accomplishment.
  • Make a list of appointments, tasks, or activities as they come up.  At the end of each day, plan your next day.  Review your notes and adjust your timeline if needed.  (Writing things down frees you from the worry of remembering.)
  • Be realistic and avoid overloading your schedule.  Knowing how to prioritize will be most helpful here.
  • Always schedule time for yourself and for “doing nothing.”  Free time is time to relax, have fun and “Just be.”

A time-organized-you is a more friendly you.  The feeling of being organized and having your priorities built into a calendar feels good.  Priorities-based, you know what is important to you.  By default, this brings a sense of confidence and well-intendedness to your goals and making you a kinder, more relaxed person to others.  And there is a bonus: people are bound to be nice in return!

Health Benefits of Being in Nature

Benefits of getting outside.

------

Nature enthusiasts are known to say that spending time in the great outdoors has a positive effect on their mental and physical well-being. Such an outlook is more than mere speculation, as it turns out spending time in nature provides a host of health benefits that might surprise even the most devoted outdoors enthusiasts.

Nature and cognitive health

A recent study published in the American Journal of Alzheimer's Disease & Other Dementias found that engaged persons with dementia in horticultural therapy-based (HT-based) programming solicited higher rates of participation than traditional activities (TA) programming. In addition, a separate study in the journal Dementia found that exposure to a therapeutic garden had a positive impact on quality of life for people with dementia. And it's not just dementia patients who can experience the cognitive benefits of time spent in nature, as the Hagley Museum and Library reports that numerous studies have found exposure to nature improves cognitive function.

Nature and vitamin D

The potential health benefits of vitamin D are increasingly drawing the attention of medical researchers, and for good reason. According to the Harvard Medical School, recent research has suggested that vitamin D may offer added protection against conditions such as osteoporosis, cancer, heart attack, stroke, and depression. Exposure to sunshine can help the body generate vitamin D, thus providing further reason to spend time in nature.

Nature and overall well-being

Given the aforementioned health benefits related to spending time in nature, it's easy for even non-scientists to conclude that being outdoors has a profound impact on overall well-being. But non-scientists can rest assured that recent research has confirmed such conclusions. A 2019 study published in the journal Scientific Reports found that individuals who spent at least 120 minutes a we ek in nature were significantly more likely to report good health and psychological well-being than those who spent less time outdoors. Though the authors of the study cautioned that the exposure-response relationship was under-researched, and therefore likely needed to be studied more extensively, in the meantime individuals, after a consultation with their physicians and confirmation that it's safe to get out more often, can aspire to spend at least 120 minutes in nature each week. The results may speak for themselves.

Nature has a lot to offer, and the benefits of spending more time outdoors may be even more significant than people recognize

Nutritional Benefits of Chicken

Found in cuisine around the world.

-------

Few foods may be as versatile as chicken. There is seemingly no end to the ways to cook and serve chicken, which is even an integral component in soups used to combat the common cold.

The taste of chicken is enough to compel people across the globe to include it in their diets. However, chicken also packs a nutritional punch, and recognition of its many benefits may compel health-conscious individuals to consume even more chicken going forward.

Chicken helps build a stronger body

Chicken helps build strong muscles and bones. Amino acids are vital to building muscle tissue, and fans of chicken should be happy to learn that chicken is a great source of amino acids. Amino acids produce protein, which is why chicken is considered an excellent source of protein. In fact, data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture indicates that a 100 gram serving of chicken contains as much as 32 grams of protein.

Chicken can help to control blood pressure

High blood pressure can increase risk for a host of negative health outcomes, including heart attack and stroke. Chicken is one of a handful of protein sources that can help to lower blood pressure. One animal study from researchers in Japan found that collagen, which is a protein found in chicken legs, helps to lower blood pressure. In addition, the Harvard Medical School notes that consuming at least two servings of chicken per week can help people maintain a healthy blood pressure.

Chicken and cholesterol

Another feather in chicken's cap is its status as an alternative to foods such as beef, lamb and pork. Chicken contains less saturated fat and cholesterol than red meat, which includes both lamb and pork. High cholesterol can increase a person's risk for heart attack, stroke and atherosclerosis, among other harmful conditions. So choosing a heart-healthy red meat alternative like chicken can help individuals lower their cholesterol and maintain healthy cholesterol levels.

Does it matter how chicken is cooked?

How chicken is cooked affects how beneficial it can be to people who consume it. The American Heart Association notes that grilling, broiling or roasting chicken may increase the likelihood that people will develop high blood pressure. The AHA notes that research presented at its Epidemiology and Prevention | Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health Scientific Sessions 2018 indicated the risk of developing high blood pressure was 17 percent higher in people who grilled, broiled or roasted chicken more than 15 times per month compared to those who did so less than four times per month. So the less often chicken is cooked in such ways, the better for people looking to capitalize on the nutritional benefits of chicken. It's also best to avoid frying chicken, as during the frying process foods absorb saturated fat, trans fats and cholesterol, thus negating any health benefits the poultry may otherwise provide.

The versatility of chicken is perhaps only surpassed by the many unique nutritional benefits this wildly popular food provides when cooking it in certain ways.

What is the Autumnal Equinox?

Fall starts soon.

-------

Fall begins slightly after the midpoint of September. The arrival of fall may be met with joy that cooler temperatures and vividly colored leaves will soon be the norm. For others, the arrival of fall is met with some trepidation that shorter days will soon pave the way for less sunlight and the inevitable arrival of winter.

Fall begins on Saturday, September 23, 2023, in the Northern Hemisphere on what is known as the autumnal equinox. The National Weather Service reports that the 2023 autumnal equinox will arrive at 2:50 a.m. EDT on September 23. Those who are especially anxious for fall to begin can wake up in the wee hours of the morning and enjoy their first comforting spiced treat of the season.

Equinoxes are days during the year when the hours of sunlight and darkness are just about equal, or lasting 12 hours each. At the moment the equinox occurs, the sun will be directly over the Earth's equator, which contributes to this even distribution of day and nighttime hours. National Geographic describes the equinox as "the event in which a planet's subsolar point passes through its Equator. It is when solar declination is 0 degrees." Solar declination refers to the latitude of Earth where the sun is directly overhead at noon. The equinoxes are the only times when both the northern and southern hemispheres experience roughly equal amounts of daytime and nighttime.

After the autumnal equinox, the subsolar point continues to move south as the southern hemisphere tilts toward the sun. Around December 21, the subsolar point hits the Tropic of Capricorn (23.5 degrees S), which marks the winter (December) solstice, or the day with the fewest hours of daylight during the year in the northern hemisphere.

It's important to note that the equinoxes and solstices are opposite in the hemispheres. The northern hemisphere's fall equinox occurs on the same day as the southern hemisphere's vernal (spring) equinox.

The autumnal equinox is a time when hours of daylight and nighttime are equal, something that will not occur again until the arrival of spring.
