Fashion Week in Milan

A major business event.

------

Next Next week is Fashion Week in Milan happening between Tuesday, 19th September to Monday, 25th September 2023.  It is one of the most important worldwide for this industry when the upcoming spring/summer fashions are showcased each year. The city, which is always bustling, will have even more activity.

Pickpockets, beautiful architecture, crowed streets and expensive restaurants – welcome to Milan, Italy.

Milan, a metropolis in Italy's northern Lombardy region, is a global capital of fashion and design. Since the early 1980s, Milan's fashion industry has achieved great commercial prominence.  It is also considered a financial hub and one of Italy’s wealthiest cities known for high-end restaurants and shops.

Our brief stay there last September (actually named Milano) was at the end of fashion week, which was by happenstance as we prepared to travel home from a vacation in Lake Como.

Here are a few of our insights about Milano:

If you come into this city, be sure to get an English-speaking tour guide to help get your bearings because the metropolis can be a little overwhelming even for the most sophisticated of traveler.   Also, expect high-price tags on everything.  This might be the most expensive location in Italy.

The Gothic Duomo di Milano Cathedral and the Santa Maria delle Grazie Convent, housing Leonardo da Vinci’s mural “The Last Supper,” testify to centuries of art and culture are two of the top attractions.  Our guided tour of “The Duomo” as it is referred to by the Milanese was breathtaking and amazing – it is hard for Americans to wrap their imagination around a cathedral which took six centuries to build.  Our experience with Leonardo’s painting of “The Last Supper” was disorganized but nonetheless, worth the effort.  Tickets are near impossible to obtain, but we were lucky enough that our travel agent could get us set up.  The lines moved well and while it was great to see a Da Vinci, it wasn’t nearly as big a deal as it was made out to be.

The city is also known for high end bistros, which will provide you with numerous choices, including many Michelin Star restaurants. The Italians are not shy about prices. On our first full evening there, we had an 8:00 PM reservation at a restaurant named Cracco located in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Italy's oldest active shopping gallery and a major landmark of Milan.  The Milanese are notorious for being late evening diners, and most restaurants don’t even open until 7:30 PM.  The biggest surprise of the evening was when they offered a water menu which offered a common Pellegrino for a huge amount of Euros up to a glacier water option which had a shocking price point.  In any case, it was a lovely evening.

I am not sure we will pass this way again but very glad for the experience.

Benefits of Chiropractic Care

Potential Pain management.

-------

Bad pain is one of the most debilitating workplace injuries resulting in lost time and money.   As a business owner, this can be a path to depression.

Chiropractic care is a form of complementary medicine in which a licensed chiropractic doctor uses his or her hands as well as certain machinery to manipulate joints in the body.

Subluxation is a term used in chiropractic medicine that refers to the misalignment of vertebrae or joints. Subluxation can occur from injury, repetitive motion or certain medical issues, says Verywell Health. When joints do not work properly, range of motion can be compromised and chronic pain may present in the joint or elsewhere in the body.

Chiropractic care can be instrumental in helping a person feel better without having to take pain medications. Chiropractors can treat musculoskeletal pain anywhere in the body, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Adjustments can gently realign joints to decrease pain and increase range of motion. Soft-tissue therapy may be used to relax tight muscles and relieve spasms. A chiropractor also may be able to advise as to exercises and stretches that can maintain joint stability and mobility.

Chiropractic treatment also may decrease tension and boost blood circulation, which could help reduce stressful feelings in the body. Similarly, such treatment may alleviate tension headaches and migraines by realigning the joints in the neck and back that may be contributing to the headaches.

Healthline reports a possible reduction of osteoarthritis symptoms from chiropractic care as well. When joints are properly aligned, it will reduce how much bones rub together.

One of the more profound benefits of chiropractic adjustment is the potential to reduce reliance on opioid drugs prescribed to relieve pain. Because of the efficacy of opioids, people can easily find themselves addicted to them. When their prescriptions are up, they may turn to illegal opioids to chase the pain relief and high they have grown accustomed to. The National Institute on Drug Abuse says more than 106,000 drug overdoses deaths were reported in 2021, and synthetic opioid deaths (primarily fentanyl) continue to rise, advises the NIDA.

Chiropractic care can help people live fuller lives without pain. Individuals with remaining questions can speak with their doctors about chiropractic medicine.

Should You Relocate Overseas?

There a lot of considerations.

-------

Relocating overseas for either personal or business reasons may seem romantic, but realities might paint a different picture.   The cost of relocating overseas can vary widely depending on several factors, including the distance, destination, the volume of belongings, and the services you require.

Here are some common expenses to consider:

Shipping and Transportation: This includes shipping your belongings, such as furniture and personal items, which can be a significant expense. The cost depends on the distance and method of transportation (e.g., air, sea, or land).

Visa and Immigration Fees: Depending on the country you’re moving to, you may need to pay for visas, work permits, or other immigration-related expenses.

Housing: The cost of finding and securing accommodation in your new location can vary greatly. You may need to pay rent or a deposit upfront.

Travel Expenses: Flights, travel insurance, and other travel-related costs for you and your family members can add up.

Packing and Moving Services: If you hire professionals to pack and move your belongings, this can be an additional cost.

Storage: If you need to store your items temporarily before or after the move, storage fees can apply.

Insurance: Consider insurance to protect your belongings during transit or while in storage.

Documentation and Legal Fees: You may need to pay for legal documents, such as marriage certificates, birth certificates, and translations, depending on your destination.

Language and Cultural Training: If you’re moving to a place with a different language or culture, you might want to invest in language lessons or cultural training.

Cost of Living: The cost of living in your new country may be higher or lower than your current location, affecting your ongoing expenses.

Taxes: Be aware of any tax implications related to your move, both in your home country and the destination country.

It’s essential to research and plan your international move thoroughly and budget for these various expenses. Costs can range from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands or more, depending on your specific circumstances. Consulting with relocation experts or getting quotes from moving companies can help you estimate your expenses more accurately.

Business Etiquette

Living Your Business Brand

by Candace Smith
The Etiquette Blog
Candace Smith Etiquette

Biography:  Candace Smith, wife of Nobel Prize-Winner Professor Dr. Vernon Smith and owner of the extraordinary blog, “Etiquette for the Business of Life” as featured by BBC, Chicago Tribune and USA Today offers her insights.

-------

In an interview I was asked, “What’s one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?”  My answer was, “Living your brand.”

Ideally, when you’re “living their brand,” you are consistent in:

  • Expressing and personally living by the principles inherent in the brand, such as integrity, honesty, and authenticity as implied by client trust based in their experience.
  • Making conscious personal choices that align with the business brand demonstrating belief in what the company offers others.
  • Desiring to make an authentic connection with those served and building credibility.
Etiquette-fulness Requires Humility

Though the word “etiquette-ful” hasn’t been used enough to be included yet in dictionaries, it is a useful description referencing behaviors individuals could consistently choose to represent their intentions of displaying kindness, respect, consideration, and politeness.  We remember that we will never be perfect and must be prepared to readily admit our errors along the way.

Living your Business Brand Etiquette-fully

Businesses, like people, grow and evolve.  Your business brand will likely look different ten years from now than it does today.  But that is one mark of a successful business.

Help keep yourself and your business on an upward trajectory by:
  • Seeking feedback and putting it into action.
  • Practicing self-reflection mindfully.
  • Embracing an attitude of gratitude.
  • Being open to new possibilities.
  • Putting yourself in another person’s shoes.
Reminding ourselves that these actions are worth turning into personal habits that improve our lives and the businesses we own or work for is a good habit to employ.
It’s a Lifelong Process

Admittedly, it’s difficult to learn and self-correct as we go along our life’s path.  We set ourselves in a comfortable routine or process which can sometimes keep us meeting challenges head-on.  Instead, we have to be dragged out of our comfort zone to address them.

You might try addressing challenges on a regular basis, making this a part of your business process.  Set up a meeting for yourself and the appropriate people in your business to review your business brand and how it is represented by everyone involved in your company.

Consider the following:
  • Does the company and the individuals involved in it maintain a positive social media presence?
  • Is the level of workplace professionalism representative of your business brand?
  • Are you and leaders in your business setting an etiquette-ful example?  Are you encouraging ideas, open communication, and acknowledgment of good work, or do you tolerate toxicity?

Consistent assessment is a must in order to know how you and others perceive your business and whether or not it remains in integrity with your business brand.

How to Pair Foods with Exercise

Food plays an important role in workouts.

------

Food pairing is often discussed in terms of which wines best complement particular dishes. But pairing food with exercise merits consideration, as it can create the balance needed for overall health.

Food plays an important role in workouts, giving individuals the energy necessary to perform at their peak. Timing meals appropriately and knowing what to eat before or after a workout can make a difference.

Creatine benefits weight lifting

Creatine is an organic acid that is an important ingredient for short duration, high-intensity exercises, such as weight lifting. According to Kelly Pritchett, Ph.D., RDN, director of the nutrition graduate program and assistant professor of nutrition and exercise science at Central Washington University, foods rich in protein from meat, poultry and fish can help optimize stores of creatine. Creatine also may be found in foods and beverages targeted to athletes, like protein shakes and snacks.

Pre-workout mixes include protein and carbohydrates

A snack or mini meal one to three hours before a workout is ideal so that digestive issues don't occur during a workout when the body directs more blood to muscles than digestion. Food pairings that include a high quality carbohydrate, like whole grain bread or oatmeal, with a protein source, such as peanut butter or milk, can be key. Blood sugar will stay steady with whole grain carbs, and the protein will help you to feel full and avoid overeating after a workout.

Glucose, glycogen and running

Distance running or other exercises that require endurance, such as skating or biking, require ample energy stores. Although low-carbohydrate diets are popular for people looking to lose weight, they're not ideal for people who engage in endurance sports and need carbohydrates for energy, states Johns Hopkins Medicine. Endurance athletes need more carbs than those who aren't training. These activities use both glucose in the blood and glycogen, which is sugar stored in the liver and muscles. Eating plenty of healthy carbs helps bolster energy stores. Whole fruits and grains are good sources of carbohydrates.

Benefits of bananas

For those with limited time to grab a bite before a workout, bananas might be the perfect option. According to WebMD, bananas have easily digestible carbs that will not weigh you down. The potassium in bananas also may help prevent muscle cramps during and after workouts.

Power up with potatoes

Potatoes are whole foods, meaning they contain a balance of all the essential amino acids, despite being low in whole protein. They're also rich in vitamin B6, which is critical to protein metabolism, says Mark Anthony, Ph.D., adjunct professor of science and nutrition at St. Edwards University, Austin. Potatoes also contain the right mix of sodium and potassium to maintain an electrolyte balance in the body.

Recover right

A mix of carbohydrates and lean proteins also is ideal for exercise recovery. Mix in good fats like avocado and olive oil. Carbs will help replenish depleted levels of glycogen and high-quality protein will help build and repair muscle. Don't forget to drink plenty of fluids to replace what was lost while working out.

Food and exercise go hand in hand. It's important to eat well to keep the body in top form.

Popular Signature Global Dishes

 Staycation cuisine ideas.

-------

Enjoy various ethnic cuisines at local restaurants.

North America is a cultural melting pot. People who emigrate to the United States and Canada bring many different traditions with them, and food is perhaps the quickest and simplest way for such individuals to share their cultures with their new neighbors.

Certain cultures are known for the foods they eat, and various dishes have come to embody many countries' cuisines. The following are some signature meals from around the world.

Ratatouille: France

Ratatouille is a classic French recipe that originated in Nice. It uses fresh, seasonal vegetables, which are thinly sliced and layered to form a casserole. Topped with a rich, tomato-based sauce, this rustic country dish is a one-pan meal.

Souvlaki: Greece

The word "souvlaki" is derived from the Ancient Greek word "souvla," which means skewer. Evidence suggests this dish dates back to 2000 BC. It is typically made from small cubes of meat that are grilled and eaten off the skewer. The meat used most often in Greece is pork, but chicken, lamb and beef also can be used.

Cracked conch: Bahamas

A visit to this tropical nation will have people eating conch in a number of different ways. The hallmark version, however, is cracked conch, which is breaded and deep-fried. The name of the dish comes from the method of tenderizing the chewy shellfish, which involves hitting it with a mallet or frying pan.

Feijoada: Brazil

Feijoada is made with black beans, cuts of pork and organ meat mixed into a stew. The popular dish is affordable because it uses less costly cuts of meat that need to stew to tenderize.

Xiao Long Bao: Taiwan

This soup dumpling is one of the most famous foods of Taiwan. Believed to have originated in Shanghai, the dish eventually made its way to Taiwanese cuisine. The Xia Long Bao is a thin-skinned flour dumpling filled with a pork meatball and gelatinized meat stock.

Harira: Morocco

Harira is a Moroccan soup traditionally served during Ramadan or also enjoyed by Moroccan Jews to end their fasts during Yom Kippur. The recipe calls for chickpeas or other beans, onions, rice, bits of meat (not pork), tomatoes, beaten eggs, and olive oil.

Paella: Spain

Spain's most popular dish is paella. It is a rich seafood or meat stew with rice and flavored with saffron. It's traditionally cooked over an open fire in a shallow, flat-bottom pan.

Dosa: India

Dosa is a type of pancake made from fermented rice batter poured to make a crêpe. It is usually stuffed with potato and served along with chutneys and sambar, a vegetable stew.

Plan Your October Getaway

It is not too early to start thinking about a Fall escape weekend.

-------

Fans of fall know that few things can beat the crisp, sunny afternoons of October. The early days of the month bring with them comfortable temperatures and beautiful vistas. Summer's heat and humidity often are things of the past, and time spent outdoors, whether raking leaves or tailgating at a football game, can be quite pleasant.

Early October is home to two holidays: Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day, which fall this year on October 9th. That means following the first full week of the month people in the United States have a chance to enjoy a three-day weekend to soak up all fall has to offer. Here are a few ideas.

Camping and hiking

Take in the awe of fall foliage up close and personal by visiting a rural area or park a short drive away from home. New York City residents, for example, can head to the Catskills, while Chicagoans can head to White Pines State Park. Different regions of the country will show off their fall colors at different times, and while foliage may be past peak, these two- to three-hour drives be highly enjoyable.

Fall festivals

Check out the chamber of commerce or visitors' bureau websites of various cities and towns to see what is being offered relatively close by. Many will put on community fairs, festivals and the like. Columbus Day also presents a chance to celebrate Italian culture in many places, so Italian food and cultural festivals may be on the docket for those looking for such an excursion.

Skiing towns

When the last of the summer tourists depart from ski resort towns and the lull sets in before the winter ski season heats up, visitors to Colorado cities like Aspen or Telluride or the Vermont city of Stowe can find great deals on hotel stays and dine out at relatively empty restaurants.

Warm weather culture

People who are not ready to part with warm weather can head to Miami. Miami often puts on a huge festival on Columbus Day and people from all over the world come to enjoy it. There's fun for all ages and guests are welcome to arrive in costume.

Indigenous cultures

Individuals looking to learn more about Native Americans may want to travel to the states with the highest populations of Indigenous peoples. These include Alaska, Oklahoma, New Mexico, South Dakota, Montana, and North Dakota. It's likely celebrations will be held in these areas highlighting their distinct culture and heritage.

Columbus Day weekend in the United States which is also Thanksgiving in Canada is an ideal time to get away before the rush of the holidays sets in soon enough.
