Editor's Note

Keep an Eye on Europe

Keep an eye on Europe.  There are things happening in the political arena that will have a direct effect on business there and elsewhere in the world.

For example: Italy recently had their election and voted in a conservative whom the media has again become hyperbolic about making comparisons to Mussolini.  We happened to be in Italy the Sunday of the election, and I can personally tell you that the Italians seemed apathetic about the vote and hardly looking to move that far right.  In Spain, there is an attempt to install a wealth tax. And perhaps receiving the most media coverage, the United Kingdom was going to cut taxes and then immediately backed away from it.

In my opinion, it seems that much of the EU is trying to figure out changes that are needed on uncertain footing.   Just two cents from an American traveling abroad.

How to Hone Your Time Management Skills

Ideas to Have a Better Day.

-------

Ours is a busy society where everyone is moving from place to place quite rapidly, whether at school, home or work. As a result, many people may feel that there simply are not enough hours in the day to get it all done.

Quite often people delay certain tasks until the late hours of the night as a way to catch up. But that can be detrimental to health. The National Institute of Health warns that lack of adequate sleep can affect mood, adversely affect relationships, increase anxiety, and possibly contribute to depression. Inadequate sleep is also associated with increased risk of high blood pressure, obesity and heart disease.

Rather than tapping into precious hours of shut-eye, men and women can learn how to manage their time better so they complete more tasks during the day, leaving more time to relax and sleep at night. Effective time management begins with these strategies.

1. Set priorities. Begin by setting priorities. This involves making a list of all the tasks that need to be completed, and then putting them in order of most essential to least essential. Once you understand where to first devote your attention, address items on the list in order of their priority.

2. Develop goals. Goals do not have to be far-off ideas for the future. They can be easily reached today. Simple goals such as, "I want to remove all nonessential paperwork from my desk" can be tackled quickly and without much effort. Goals give a person something to work toward and are important ways to steer you in the right direction. Without goals, you may wander aimlessly. Accomplishing goals of all shapes and sizes gives a feeling of accomplishment.

3. Avoid distractions. Distractions can pull attention away from important tasks at hand. Distractions can be phone calls, text alerts, personal issues, people in the room, and many other things. Figure out how you work best and minimize distractions so that you can fully focus on your priorities.

4. Stop multitasking. Unfortunately, multitasking is not the key to getting more things done. In fact, it could actually be hurting performance. Research conducted at Stanford University discovered that multitasking is less productive than doing a single thing at a time. You simply cannot put full effort into multiple things at once - and something will be short-changed if you try.

5. Write things down. Keeping information floating around your mind is ineffective and can lead to stress. Put things down on paper or make digital notes to keep track of what needs to get done. Set your targets and break each task down to manageable pieces. Physically cross items off your list as they are completed.

Time management is a skill that can be learned with practice and focusing on elements of success.

The World's Premier Haven

Simply One of the Best.

-------

A Switzerland is often called “the world’s premier business haven” with its exceedingly friendly business culture and a world-class infrastructure second to none.  One of the most important industries within Switzerland is the iconic banking sector. One-third of the world’s wealth resides in this tiny nation. Tradition, integrity, and trust are adjectives that all aptly describe this international business destination.

Though relatively small, Switzerland has only 8.1 million inhabitants - 16% of those living in Switzerland are foreign citizens, pointing to the cosmopolitan nature of the population - the World Economic Forum’s "Global Competitiveness Report" recently ranked Switzerland's economy as the most competitive in the world. While the four national languages of Switzerland are German, French, Italian and Romansch, most professionals speak working English. In addition, Switzerland is one of the oldest democracies in the world, established in 1848.

For the last thirty years, the Federal Executive has consisted of a coalition between the country's main political parties, assuring balance neutrality and free enterprise.  This tiny landlocked country has been successfully competing in favor of Direct Foreign Investment for seemingly countless years.  With a long-standing history of neutrality – it has not been in a state of war since 1815 – an iconic banking infrastructure has been developed.  Even through the resent global economic crisis not one Swiss bank approached failure. There can be little doubt that the stability of the Swiss banking system and its financial institutions have contributed mightily to this country’s success.

Controversies aside, the Swiss have become the world’s banker with a standing estimate that one-third of all current wealth resides here.

Several universal factors contribute to this relatively small nation's ability to compete on the global scale which enhances its reputation:

  • Social peace and political stability
  • A leading economy with currency and price stability
  • Highly professional international banks that focus on privacy
  • First-rate infrastructure
  • High productivity combined with extraordinary product and service quality
  • First-class and world-renowned universities and technical institutes

This week Switzerland made a virtually unprecedented move which further enhances its international standing by joining sanctions against Russia.  This was done because it was the moral thing to do and at great financial sacrifice.

Business Etiquette

 Etiquette as Awareness

 by Candace Smith
The Etiquette Blog
Etiquette for the Business of Life

Awareness is the degree to which we are alert and attentive to our internal states, preferences, intuitions, and surroundings. We can identify our emotions, perceptions, strengths, and weaknesses, and realize that others also strive for these habits.

When mindfulness and intentionality are taken on as life goals, the actions of kindness and courtesy satisfy and reward us, giving a sense that we are helping to make the world a better place.

Social Awareness and Etiquette Skills

Being both realistic and optimistic helps a person explore what it means to be “recognizably respectful” throughout all situations involving others. It always comes down to awareness: “What’s it like to be on the other side of me?”

Consideration of other people not only makes you etiquette-ful, it shifts your perspective outside of yourself, making you more friendly and approachable. In any given social situation, you are called upon to make eye contact, greet people, and begin a conversation. These etiquette skills will only seem forced or robotic if you are not socially aware enough to put them in the context of your environment and audience.

You can enhance both your social awareness and etiquette skills by practicing the following:

  • Aim to be present and available.
  • As a learner, give yourself “breath-ful” moments during the day to focus on what you are aware of.
  • Give yourself permission to quiet the chatter in your thoughts.
  • Practice mindfully listening to others, seeking understanding and empathy.
  • Find something positive to say about what others are saying and compliment accordingly.
  • Ask yourself, “Am I acting as a person I’d like to meet?”
  • “Is there anything I can say or do right now to show this person that they are valued?”
Knowing You

The degree to which you socialize with other people depends on your comfort level. Whether you feel at home in a crowded room of strangers or search frantically for a friend you can hang out with throughout the event depends on what you’re comfortable with.
But the thing that can increase your confidence and, therefore, your comfort level in social situations is your knowledge of etiquette skills. Knowing what is expected of you and that you have the skills to meet that expectation, will make you confident in taking necessary action.
And when your confidence wanes, being self-aware enough to know that you need to adopt a new skill set or make some emotional adjustments to pick yourself up will serve you well. Give yourself an awareness check with these questions:
  • How do I feel about my current circumstances?
  • What might I do in this moment to feel successful?
  • What is holding me back?
  • What behaviors serve me well each day?
  • What do I know about myself that will get me through a current situation?

Knowing you, how you act and react, and how you relate to other people is a great help in understanding how to navigate your life socially and professionally. And when you help other people feel heard, acknowledged, and respected, you, too, benefit by the internal civilizing awareness that etiquette can help you be the person you want to be.

To Stretch of Not to Stretch

An Important Component to Your Workout.

-------
Fitness and health care professionals generally agree that stretching is an important component of an effective workout regimen. However, there remains some confusion as to when to stretch and which stretches athletes should perform to maintain optimal health and flexibility.

The Harvard Medical School notes that stretching was once believed necessary to warm up muscles and prepare them for activity. However, the Mayo Clinic now notes that stretching should not be considered a warmup activity. Rather, the general consensus among health care professionals is that individuals should first warm up their bodies for five to 10 minutes with some light exercise, such as low-intensity walking or jogging. In addition, the Mayo Clinic notes that some research has suggested that pre-event stretching adversely affects athletes' performance. That may be a concern for competitive athletes and can add to the confusion non-competitive fitness enthusiasts have about the importance of stretching. Individuals who exercise to improve their overall health can stretch after their five- to 10-minute warmup and then again after completing their cardio and strength training. Competitive athletes can consult their coaches and trainers about when to stretch and which stretches to perform.

When stretching, all people, including competitive athletes and individuals who exercise as part of their health care routines, should focus on proper form. Numerous online tutorials indicate how to stretch the various muscle groups in a way that improves flexibility and decreases injury risk.

Autumn Leaves

Autumn in the United States.

-------

Millions of people each year look forward to the magnificent colors on display in autumn. Fall offers irreplaceable views, whether you're atop a mountain ridge or thick in the folds of a forest. In addition, the crackle of leaves underfoot and the earthy smell of the soil tempts the senses even more.

Some advance planning can help make fall foliage trips that much more enjoyable and awe-inspiring.

Viewing times

Areas of the northern-most latitude will start to show color earlier than more southern areas. Generally speaking, the leaf-viewing season begins in late September and runs through early November for much of North America. Peak times for viewing depend on areas of travel and time of year. For large swaths of Canada and the United States, plan trips for late-September to mid-October. The Weather Channel offers maps and charts at www.weather.com/maps/fall-foliage for the peak times for many areas of the U.S.

Pick your destination

Anywhere with deciduous trees provides the opportunity to witness blazing autumn color. During leaf-peeping season, travelers can go coast to coast and see awesome vistas. Some regions are particularly known for their leaf displays. New York's Catskill and Adirondack regions are prime spots for visitors in the autumn. Those who live further north will find that leaves in Vermont are such an attraction that routes are published indicating where to enjoy the best views. Further south, Central and Eastern Virginia peak in late October. And don't forget the shores of the Great Lakes, which are awash in reds, oranges and yellows by mid-September. The travel resource Frommer's offers more leaf-peeping locales to visit.

Pack the right gear

While most people are not without a smartphone that can capture amazing high-resolution imagery, serious leaf photographers may want to take out their prized camera equipment for leaf-peeping excursions. Also bring along a map or a GPS-enabled device so you can explore back roads and areas off the beaten path more readily.

There are plenty of apps that can help with foliage-finding adventures, so a phone is a handy tool. When packing, also bring along hiking boots, comfortable layered clothing and any equipment you'd normally take for an afternoon in the great outdoors.

Another idea is to hit the ATM machine prior to the visit. Many smaller towns and their local shops may not take credit cards, so it's best to have cash on hand for food and souvenirs.

Extend the day

Make leaf-viewing part of a larger series of events for the day. Scope out vineyards where you can sample local wines or plan trips around orchards, where you can come home with beautiful photos as well as fresh-picked apples and pumpkins. You may find a county fair or street festival while exploring

Oktoberfest 2022

It is Back!

-------

Beer lovers who also like to travel no doubt include attending Oktoberfest in Munich on their bucket lists. The annual festival in Munich begins in late September and lasts for 16 days, during which people from across the globe gather to celebrate Bavarian culture.

A wildly popular folk festival held annually just outside the city center of Munich, Oktoberfest is a joyous celebration that includes food, dancing, music, parades, and, of course, beer. Some observers may note that the Oktoberfest celebration, minus the parades, closely resembles a modern day wedding reception. And such an observation provides a clue as to the origins of Oktoberfest.

Oktoberfest includes so much tradition that some revelers may feel as though it must trace its origins back many centuries. However, according to History.com, the original Oktoberfest took place in 1810. That festival was actually a celebration of the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. To commemorate the couple's marriage, the Bavarian royalty invited the citizens of Munich to celebrate with them during a nearly weeklong feast that included plenty of music, food and dancing. The fields where the celebrations took place were renamed the Theresienwiese in honor the new bride, though celebrants now refer to this area by the abbreviated name of "Wies'n."

While both Prince Ludwig and his bride have long since passed away, each would no doubt take comfort knowing that their nuptials are still being celebrated today, more than 200 years after they tied the knot.

This year, Oktoberfest celebrations in Munich begin on Saturday, September 17, and continue until Sunday, October 3.

Perhaps it is a good time to plan for your trip next year!
