Time on Your Hands this Sunday!
On the first Sunday in November, people across North America will adjust their clocks, turning them back one hour and thus returning Daylight Saving Time back to Standard Time. When spring arrives anew, the clocks once again will move forward an hour. This phenomenon has taken place for more than 50 years.
Time zones once were overseen by the railroad industry in an effort to streamline transportation. In 1918, the handling of time zones and other topics of time were turned over to a federal organization known as the Interstate Commerce Commission. The ICC also was put in charge of regulating the newly established Daylight Saving Time, purported to help with the war effort. The concept initially was introduced by Germany during the war to conserve fuel and power by extending daylight hours. The United States soon followed suit.
After World War I, DST was abolished nationally, but continued on a state-by-state basis, according to the Department of Transportation. However, the DOT took over regulation of DST in 1966, and by this time a law made it consistent across the nation.
While switching the clocks has become rote, the effects of this tweak have been notable. Some consider it a mild annoyance that messes with their schedules for a few days. Certain health professionals have gone on record to say it is bad for health. The time change in the spring (DST) has been blamed for everything from increases in traffic accidents to a greater number of heart attacks as people adjust to a temporary deficit in sleep, according to NBC News. A 2019 poll from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that 71 percent of people want to stop switching the clocks.
Over the previous half-decade, 29 states have introduced legislation for year-round Daylight Saving Time. In March 2022, the United States Senate passed legislation that would make Daylight Saving Time permanent starting in 2023, ending the twice-annual changing of clock times, leading to brighter afternoons all year long. The measure was dubbed the Sunshine Protection Act, and passed unanimously by vote. To date, however, the House of Representatives, which has held a committee meeting on the matter, has not passed the bill before it can go to President Biden to sign. The House is considering whether DST or Standard time is the better option for permanency, based on health implications and circadian rhythms. Other impediments affecting the legislation's chances of passing appear to be fundamental disagreements over the bill's language and a general consensus that other matters before the House may be more urgent.
Will switching the clocks each year come to an end? It still may take time to resolve this issue. In the interim, the public should be prepared to switch their clocks back on

"Anxiety Over Flu Vaccines?"
Facts Around 2022 Flu Vaccines.-------
"Flu season" has become such a commonplace turn of phrase that it's easy to overlook just how big a threat the flu can pose. But estimates from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest that as many as 41 million illnesses and 52,000 deaths each year can be attributed to the flu.
There's no denying that the flu can be a formidable foe, even for those who recover from it within a few days of becoming ill. Flu vaccines can make cases of the flu much more manageable, making now a great time to answer some common questions that arise every flu season.
Why are flu vaccinations important?
The CDC notes that annual flu vaccinations help to reduce the risk of getting the flu. But it's also worth noting that a flu shot helps to prevent more serious complications for those people that do get it. Such complications can include ear infections, sinus infections, bacterial pneumonia, and the worsening of chronic conditions like asthma and diabetes.
How do flu vaccines work?
Researchers work year-round to get an idea of which influenza viruses are likely to be most common in a given flu season. This is why flu vaccines change from year to year. Regardless of those changes, the CDC notes that all flu vaccines work in the same way, with each causing the development of antibodies in the body within a couple of weeks of vaccination. These antibodies protect against the flu virus.
Do flu vaccines take individuals into account?
The CDC notes that, during the 2022-23 flu season, three flu vaccines are preferentially recommended for people ages 65 and older. That recommendation was based on research suggesting the three vaccines are more effective for people in this age group than the standard dose unadjuvanted flu vaccine. For the 2022-23 flu season, the CDC has no preferential recommendation for people under 65.
Should everyone receive a flu shot?
Though there are rare exceptions, the CDC urges all individuals age six months and older to get a flu shot every year. Vaccination can be especially important for people considered to be at elevated risk of serious complications should they develop the flu. This includes individuals over 65, people with chronic health conditions and children younger than two-years-old, among others. A more complete list of people who could be at high risk of flu complications is available at cdc.gov/flu/highrisk/index.htm.
What is the best time to get a flu shot?
The CDC notes that September and October are generally the best times for most people who need a single-dose vaccination to get their flu shot. Anyone concerned about when to receive the flu shot is urged to speak with their physicians, ideally before the end of October.
Am I protected immediately after receiving a flu shot?
The flu shot does not provide immediate protection. The CDC notes that it takes roughly two weeks for antibodies to develop and provide protection against the flu virus. This is one reason why it's wise to get a flu shot before flu season begins.
Flu vaccines are a highly effective mode of protection against influenza viruses. More information is available at cdc.gov. but always consult with your physician.

Offshore IPOs
Offshore Strategies Mirroring Onshore.-------
Taking a privately held entity public offshore might be an excellent means to solve specific and unique business problems or raise equity for a current subsidiary. A very detailed process, it needs to be only handled by an experienced firm.
Exit Strategy or Raise Capital
Listing your company on a foreign stock exchange has become more attractive as the world marketplace has turned to 24-hour trading. Clients may find an Offshore IPO an attractive means to raising much needed capital or for an exit strategy. In addition, an Offshore IPO might be much easier and less expensive to accomplish than its domestic counterpart. Thus, it may be perfect for small to mid-size companies from all over the world.
Looking for an exit strategy or to raise capital?
The ideal candidate would be a viable business with great management and proven financials of at least 3-5 years. Green and mining sectors are of particular interest at this time but overall, this path is sector agnostic. NYSE Euronext and GXG First Quote are both possible sites for listings, but others are utilized as appropriate. Target share capital would be between 5M to 25M. Cost to list start at 125,000 Euro plus 1/10 of 1% of market capital. There is no 144 restricted stock.
Listing requirements vary by exchange and include minimum stockholder's equity, a minimum share price, and a minimum number of shareholders. Exchanges have listing requirements to ensure that only high-quality securities are traded on them and to uphold the exchange's reputation among investors.

The Power of a Smile!
by Candace Smith
The Etiquette Blog
Candace Smith Etiquette
If we go through our days focused on solutions and aiming for positives, it is inevitable that we tap into the power of a smile. An easy expression that puts our best self forward.
11th Century Buddhist monk, Atiśa, said, “The best accomplishment is a steady lessening of negative emotions.” Your smile is the most empowering facial expression. When you smile it’s difficult to hold on to the negative.
Words that Make Me Smile
Finding good quotes that “say it all” always makes me smile. These quotes talk about the ways smiling is the source of personal power, getting things started, seeing the world from a better vantage point, and aiming to be the person you want most to be. Perhaps you will find inspiration in them to share more smiles.
“Smile at the obstacle, for it is a bridge.” (Medusa)
“Let us always meet each other with smile, for the smile is the beginning of love.” (Mother Teresa)
"Nothing you wear is more important than your smile.” (Connie Stevens)
“Your smile will give you a positive countenance that will make people feel comfortable around you.” (Les Brown)
"A warm smile is the universal language of kindness.” (William Arthur Ward)
“Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” (Dr. Seuss)
“It is impossible to persuade a man who does not disagree, but smiles.” (Muriel Spark)
“A simple smile. That’s the start of opening your heart and being compassionate to others.” (Dalai Lama)
“You don’t have to be happy to smile.” (Daniel Willey)

“A smile cures the wounding of a frown.” (William Shakespeare)
“I have many problems in life. But my lips don’t know that. They always smile.” (Charlie Chaplin)
“What we call beauty in a face lies in the smile.” (Leo Tolstoy)
“It’s hard not to feel happy when you make someone smile.” (Roy T. Bennett)
“When you have to work, work with a smile.” (Kapil Dev)
“Everyone smiles in the same language.” (George Carlin)
“When you smile at a stranger, there is already a minute outflow of energy. You become a giver.” (Eckhart Tolle)
“A smile is a friend maker.” (Bangambiki Habyarimana)
Using the Power of a Smile
When your face is relaxed and holds a smile, your eyes appear warm and accepting. Using that expression while looking directly at someone acknowledges that person and makes you someone they will remember.
The power of a smile is that it makes you appear friendly, helpful, and trustworthy. And when you back up your smile with actions that support its purpose, you become the kind of person that people gravitate towards. A genuine smile will always help you win friends and influence people!

What is Movember?
Grow Out that 70s Moustache.-------
Started in Melbourne, Australia, by two friends nearly 20 years ago, Movember® has become a global, mustachioed phenomenon that has since helped to fund more than 1,250 men's health projects.
Each November, men across the globe agree to grow a moustache in an effort to raise awareness about men's health issues. Dubbed Movember®, this annual effort is the brainchild of two friends, Travis Garone and Luke Slattery, who had been joking about how to bring moustaches back into fashion. The two men were inspired to tie their efforts into a campaign to raise awareness about men's health by the mother of a friend who, at the time, was raising funds for breast cancer.
Since its inception, Movember® has helped raise awareness about three particular issues, prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men's suicide, that might otherwise have garnered considerably less attention. Taking time to understand these issues can help make Movember® an even greater success than it already is.
Prostate cancer
The World Cancer Research Fund International reports that prostate cancer is the second most commonly occurring cancer in men and the fourth most common cancer overall. In fact, more than 1.4 million men across the globe are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. Education about prostate cancer can include an emphasis on the factors and behaviors that increase a man's risk for the disease, which the WCRFI indicates include height (being tall increases a man's risk) and weight (being overweight and obese also increases risk).
Testicular cancer
The American Cancer Society reports that the average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is about 33, which underscores the notion that no man is too young to learn about men's health issues. Though testicular cancer is not as prevalent as prostate cancer, the American Society of Clinical Oncology notes that diagnoses of the disease have been on the rise for decades. The reasons for that are unknown, but lack of awareness of the disease and what can be done to detect it early could be contributors to the increase.
Men's suicide
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention reports that suicide is the 12th leading cause of death in the United States. The rate of suicide is highest among middle-aged white men, and in 2020 men died by suicide at a rate nearly four times higher than women. Globally, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation reports that suicide rates in men are just over twice as high as those for women. A greater awareness of suicide, including how much more prevalent it is among men than women, could help prevent more suicides. More information about suicide prevention is available at afsp.org.
What started as a playful way to restore moustaches to their once-lofty status has become a highly successful campaign that has helped to raise awareness about three significant men's health issues. More information about Movember® can be found at us.movember.com.

Fish is Brain Food!
The Nutritional Value of Fish.
-------
Fish is an important component of a healthy diet. Compared to many other sources of protein, including beef, pork and chicken, certain varieties of fish are lower in calories per serving size. Plus, fish is an important source of omega-3 fatty acids, which have been linked to heart and brain health.
The American Heart Association recommends that people eat at least two servings of fish each week. Knowing how various types of fish stack up when compared to one another can help people decide which fish to include in their diets. The following is some nutritional information on some popular types of fish, courtesy of the United States Department of Agriculture. Nutritional information for raw fish is based on a standard three-ounce serving size.
· Cod: (Pacific): 70 calories, 0.54 grams fat, 15.22 grams protein
· Flounder: 78 calories, 1.02 grams fat, 16.02 grams protein
· Haddock: 74 calories, 0.61 grams fat, 16.36 grams protein
· Halibut: (Atlantic and Pacific): 94 calories, 1.95 grams fat, 17.69 grams protein
· Mahi mahi: 72 calories, 0.60 grams fat, 15.72 grams protein
· Ocean perch: 81 calories, 1.38 grams fat, 15.84 grams protein
· Salmon (farmed): 156 calories, 9.22 grams fat, 16.92 grams protein
· Tilapia: 81 calories, 1.44 grams fat, 17.07 grams protein
· Tuna: 93 calories, 0.81 grams fat, 19.89 grams protein
The way fish is prepared can alter its nutritional profile. Baking, grilling or broiling without adding fat are the most healthy ways to prepare fish. Enhance the flavor of fish with fresh herbs and citrus marinades

The Basics of Pickleball
Sweeping the Nation.
-------
A court sport is sweeping the nation, and it isn't tennis or basketball. According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, 4.8 million people played pickleball in 2021, marking a nearly 15 percent growth in the total number of players from the year prior.
Data from the SFIA suggests pickleball is popular among people of all ages. Total participation among players between ages six and 17 (21 percent), 18 and 34 (29 percent) and 35 and 54 (20 percent) is significant, and players 65 and older also are well represented (18 percent).
As the popularity of pickleball grows, now is a great time to explore the basics of this game that's become a go-to pastime for so many people.
What is pickleball?
USA PickleballTM notes that pickleball combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. That game is played with a paddle and a plastic ball with holes and can be played both indoors and outdoors on a badminton-sized court with a slightly modified tennis net. Much like tennis, pickleball can be played in a singles (one-on-one) or doubles (two-on-two) format.
How long has pickleball been played?
Despite a recent and meteoric spike in popularity, pickleball has been around since 1965. The brainchild of three fathers from Bainbridge Island (which is just a brief ferry ride away from Seattle), the game was invented as a means of entertaining bored children. It has since evolved from those roots and become a wildly popular game across both the United States and Canada, and the game has even begun to spread into Europe and Asia.
How is pickleball played?
An extensive list of the rules of pickleball can be found at https://usapickleball.org/what-is-pickleball/official-rules/rules-summary/. A game is typically played to 11 points, and a team must win by two. Tournament games may be played to 15 or 21, and a team must win by two.
Does pickleball utilize referees?
Recreational games of pickleball can rely on the honor system much like pick-up games of other sports do. However, USA PickleballTM notes that referees and line judges are important components of tournament play. More information about becoming a pickleball referee can be found at https://usapickleball.org/get-involved/pickleball-officiating/.
Why should I play pickleball?
Players enjoy the game of pickleball for a multitude of reasons, including the thrill of competition, the chance to socialize and the opportunity to exercise outside of a gym or home fitness center. But many play the game because they find it fun.
Pickleball has experienced a notable spike in popularity in recent years. More information about the game and how to get involved is available at https://usapickleball.org.

Milan, Italy
Our Recent Experience in this Capital of Fashion.by Jeff Corbett
-------
Pickpockets, beautiful architecture, crowed streets and expensive restaurants – welcome to Milan, Italy.
Milan, a metropolis in Italy's northern Lombardy region, is a global capital of fashion and design. Since the early 1980s, Milan's fashion industry has achieved great commercial prominence. It is also considered a financial hub and one of Italy’s wealthiest cities known for high-end restaurants and shops.
Our brief stay there in September was at the end of fashion week, which is held twice a year in Milan (actually named Milano). If you come into this city, be sure to get an English-speaking tour guide to help get your bearings because the metropolis can be a little overwhelming even for the most sophisticated of traveler. Also, expect high-price tags on everything. This might be the most expensive location in Italy.
The Gothic Duomo di Milano Cathedral and the Santa Maria delle Grazie Convent, housing Leonardo da Vinci’s mural “The Last Supper,” testify to centuries of art and culture are two of the top attractions. Our guided tour of “The Duomo” as it is referred to by the Milanese was breathtaking and amazing – it is hard for Americans to wrap their imagination around a cathedral which took six centuries to build. Our experience with Leonardo’s painting of “The Last Supper” was disorganized but nonetheless, worth the effort. Tickets are near impossible to obtain, but we were lucky enough that our travel agent could get us set up. The lines moved well and while it was great to see a Da Vinci, it wasn’t nearly as big a deal as it was made out to be.
The city is also known for high end bistros, which will provide you with numerous choices, including many Michelin Star restaurants. The Italians are not shy about prices. On our first full evening there, we had an 8:00 PM reservation at a restaurant named Cracco located in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Italy's oldest active shopping gallery and a major landmark of Milan. The Milanese are notorious for being late evening diners, and most restaurants don’t even open until 7:30 PM. The biggest surprise of the evening was when they offered a water menu which offered a common Pellegrino for a huge amount of Euros up to a glacier water option which had a shocking price point. In any case, it was a lovely evening.
I am not sure we will pass this way again but very glad for the experience.
