Your True Identity

by Toni Delos Santos

One of the hardest decisions professional athletes must make is knowing when it is time to retire. One of the biggest things they miss are the competition, attention, and camaraderie with their teammates.  They have spent years working day in and day out to become a football player, home-run hitter or tennis star. Their whole identity is tied into what they do and when what they do is over, they struggle with who they are.

This is a line that not only gets blurred in sports but also in life. When you meet someone new, one of the first questions they may ask is, “What do you do?” Then you respond by telling them, “I am a doctor, or I am a businessman.” It seems that you build your whole identity around what you do as opposed to who you are. It all starts when you are younger and your identity shifts depending on what stage of your life that you are in. If you have an older brother named John, then you are known as John’s younger brother. If you are in college at USC on a basketball scholarship, then you are the basketball player that plays at USC. When you become a mother or father then you are John’s father to his friends. As you can see, depending on the setting, your identity is always changing.

When I work with athletes of all levels their self esteem is very much tied into their performance, much like it is in the business world. There is nothing better than to close a big deal or win an award for top producer at the company. It validates that identity that you are successful and that makes you okay as a person. So then when you are doing well in your profession, you are a good person and when you hit a glitch, your perception is that people are going to think that you are not as accomplished or as hardworking. The truth is that what you do is exactly that! It is what you do because you enjoy it and have worked hard to be able to make a living at it.

We all have unique characteristics and values that make up our identity.

- Are you a person of faith?
- Are you a loyal friend?
- Are you discipline?
- Are you a hard worker?
- Are you driven to succeed?
- Are you a good partner?
- Are you someone that is constantly striving to learn?
- What hobbies do you enjoy outside of work?
- Do you put your family first?
- Are you an honest person?

Your career can change and transform into many different areas throughout your life and thankfully, your identity of who you are at your core will remain solid throughout all the changes. When it is time to retire or take on a new challenge, you will bring that same person with the amazing qualities that you have cultivated for your next chapter.

Mental Strength & Etiquette

 by Candace Smith
The Etiquette Blog
Candace Smith Etiquette

Mental strength is a lot like physical strength.  Developing healthy habits of mind is important and requires intentional self-care by determined effort.  It is often neglected, however, as it is not directly viewed by others or oneself.

Etiquette embodies knowing the guidelines and social rules that anyone can choose to acknowledge and belong to membership in polite society.  When you courteously introduce yourself and are kindly inclusive of others during meetings, you are sending peaceful signals, just as you do when you hold a door for the person behind you, or outstretch your arm to brace an elevator door allowing others to enter.  The social niceties of always saying "please" and "thank you" simply make you feel good.

When being etiquette-ful is a stated aim, a groundwork develops for that necessary balancing of knowing what to put first.  This contributes greatly to mental strength.

Mental strength involves your ability to think, feel, and be at your best.  You can make choices and take actions that help you grow mentally stronger, with resilience as an outcome.

A strong and healthy mind says to life, “Bring on the challenges!”  It fortifies you when times get hard.  Mental wellness gives you the muscles to shine through the events of life and contributes to the forgiving state of mind needed to weather events that happen by no fault of your own. It helps in sustaining compassion and a calm mind.

As with any other goal, building mental and emotional resilience requires structured practice.  Try incorporating each of the following activities into your daily routine so that they become habits:

- Carve out a measured amount of time for mindfulness through prayer, meditation, or quiet reflection on inspiring reading or listening.
- Deep breathing exercises are crucial to your body's overall well-being which, in turn, is beneficial to your mental health.
- Sustain a period of time each day when you focus on only one thing at a time.  Notice that in this moment you are simply doing and thinking of one task or activity.
- Be physical. Walking, running, going to the gym.  Exercise increases serotonin, dopamine, and nor-epinephrine in the brain and it improves and normalizes neurotransmitter levels, which ultimately helps us feel mentally healthy.

Our resilience and mental strength can be found when life circumstances change unexpectedly through loss or drastic changes.  But prevail we must.

This means that even though our personal situation affects us, our reactions to the situation shouldn’t necessarily affect other people who are not directly involved.

The following questions are helpful when you want to etiquette-fully persevere:

- Am I focused on what I can control?
- Am I being kind and considerate to each person I engage?
- Am I over-engaging with “the news” and activities that upset me?
- Am I choosing what I know is healthy for myself?
- When upset, do I reach out to share with someone who is good at listening?
- Am I staying connected with family and friends every day?
- Am I reaching out to invite others into my circle, keeping my eyes open for someone needing help?
- Am I engaging my sources of inspiration and strength?
- Am I speaking about and to myself kindly?

Being mentally strong calls us to engage our humanness.  Etiquette calls us to show kindness and respect to every person we encounter, and this includes ourselves.

How Many Calories Do You Burn?

Burning calories is often a focal point of weight loss efforts. People go to great lengths to burn more calories, but they might be surprised to learn how many they can burn performing relatively routine physical activities.

Men and women also may be surprised to learn that they burn calories differently from one another. According to the Mayo Clinic, men usually have less body fat and more muscle than women of the same age and weight. As a result, men typically burn more calories than women, though body size and composition also affects how many calories a person will burn while performing a given activity. For example, a man who is larger and has more muscle than another man his age will burn more calories, even if both men perform the same activity with the same level of intensity.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture cites the following calorie-burning figures for a 154-pound, 5'10" man who performs certain physical activities. Women likely won't burn as many calories performing these activities, but each activity can still be an effective way for men and women to burn more calories.

· Walking (3.5 miles per hour): In 30 minutes, a man can expect to burn 140 calories. A man who walks 4.5 miles per hour will burn approximately 230 calories. The online health resource Healthline.com notes that a 125-pound person may burn roughly 150 calories walking for 30 minutes at 4.5 miles per hour.

· Hiking: A man will burn roughly 185 calories in 30 minutes of moderate-intensity hiking. Women won't burn as many calories, but both moderate and vigorous hiking are great ways to burn calories regardless of a person's gender.

· Light gardening/yard work: A man will burn approximately 165 calories in 30 minutes performing light gardening/yard work, while he will burn roughly 220 calories performing more physically taxing yard work like chopping wood. A 125-pound person will burn roughly 135 calories after 30 minutes of light gardening.

· Cycling: Men can burn roughly 145 calories cycling at 10 miles per hour or less for 30 minutes. That figure jumps to 295 calories when men ride at 10 miles per hour or faster. Healthline notes that a 125-pound person can burn roughly 210 calories in 30 minutes when riding between 12 and 13.9 miles per hour.

· Playing with children: Play sessions with the kids can help both moms and dads burn calories. Healthline notes that a 155-pound person may burn 149 calories in 30 minutes of playing with kids at moderate intensity, while a 125-pound person will burn roughly 120 calories in the same time.

No two individuals are the same, so it can be hard for men and women to pinpoint just how many calories they burn performing popular physical activities. But there's no denying that many of the activities adults engage in every day afford them ample opportunities to burn calories.

2021 Fashion Trends to Watch

Keeping up on the latest fashion trends often means having a foot firmly planted in the past. Experts say fashion is cyclical, which means there's a good chance that if you hold on to items long enough, they'll become popular once again.

New York-based celebrity stylist Samantha Brown says it's common for trends to follow a 20-year cycle for reappearance. That means that the looks that were popular in the late 1990s and early 2000s are now poised for a comeback.

In addition to Y2K-esque influences, current fashion trends are focused on easy-to-wear items that will continue to help people be comfortable during Zoom meetings, but also ensure they look put together when they venture outside into a post-pandemic world. Here's a look at some of what's trending.

· Ripped jeans: Distressed jeans have now paved the way for big 1990s rips in lighter-washed denims, which have made a return in a big way. Browse your local Forever 21 or Hollister and all the cool kids are now donning what their parents wore while attending college decades ago. And while you're updating your jeans, be sure to pick high-waisted, wider-legged "Mom" jeans, as they're more popular than skinny options.

· Chokers: Chokers were one of the quintessential accessories of the 1990s. Tight around the neck, these necklaces can be made from stretchy fabrics, leather cords or even beads. They're at home at a music festival or a night out on the town.

· Patchwork prints: Patchwork offers a more delicate take on the flannel of early 1990s grunge attire. Style experts say it provides a romantic touch, but is still casual and edgy.

· Sporty and hip-hop trends: Sporty Spice and Gwen Stefani could often be seen in sports bras and athletic pants, and that look is returning. Athletic-inspired hoodies, brands, track pants, and footwear are casual and comfortable. Overalls are another effortless and laid back style to make a resurgence. They're equally at home paired with heels or Vans, Adidas or Converse sneakers.

· Cropped cardigans and tops: Showing midriff is back in a big way. Stores are stocked in cropped tops that are just as cute with lounge-worthy sweatpants as high-waisted jeans.

· Sweatpants: Perhaps fueled by a year of spending time indoors learning virtually and working from home, sweatpants and leggings emerged as go-to staples for daily dressing and were dubbed "couch clothing." When heading out now, trade in muted gray or black for candy-colored joggers.

· Bulky footwear: If you are a guy or gal who never left home without your trusty Doc Martens in the past, dust off those boots and other clunky shoes for the ultimate comeback. Top Trends Guide says 1990s shoes, such as square toe heels, combat boots, platforms, and thick-soled sneakers, are trendy once again.

Fashion trends will look familiar this year, as many looks trace their roots to the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Tips for Vacation Rentals Summer 2021

After a dismal 2020 when people's movements were greatly restricted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, travel and tourism could increase significantly beginning in the summer of 2021. That's great news for the businesses and workers who make their living in the tourism industry, and it's music to the ears of people itching to get out of the house and head off for parts unknown.

Vacation rentals figure to be hot commodities in the months to come. According to the short-term rental property management platform Guesty, vacation rental reservations between June and August of 2021 increased by 110 percent compared to the same period a year earlier. Competition for vacation rentals could be steep this summer, and a few tips could help vacationers find a property to call their home away from home.

· Act quickly. Travel and tourism industry professionals reported an uptick in demand for vacation rentals as early as February 2021. COVID-19 vaccinations had already been available to millions of people by then, so it's no surprise rentals picked up around that time. Anyone still looking for a rental should be prepared to move quickly upon finding properties they like, as remaining rentals may not stay on the market with more and more fully vaccinated people looking to travel.

· Recognize that location might not be everything. Location is a top priority in a typical vacation season, but summer 2021 figures to be an atypical time to travel. Location typically bears such significance because travelers want to be close to attractions and amenities like shops and restaurants. But many areas, including some tourism hotspots, are only gradually reopening this summer. So proximity to amenities may not be as important this summer as it has been in the past. Recognizing that may expand travelers' options as they scan vacation rental listings.

· Focus on the rental. Though location might not be as important in the summer of 2021, the rental property itself might take on heightened importance. Restaurants may still be operating under capacity restrictions this summer, which might make it hard to book dinner reservations. Travelers also may not want to dine out three times per day if doing so requires adhering to various restrictions. That places extra importance on the amenities of the vacation rental. Rentals with fully functional kitchens, and even those with outdoor kitchens, may be especially valuable to travelers this summer. In addition, rentals with plenty of space to lounge around indoors and outdoors could provide a comfortable respite for travelers without much to do.

Many people are planning to go on vacation this summer. Would-be travelers may have to reconsider their traditional approach to vacation rentals in response to what figures to be a unique time to travel.
