Dr. Cyril Wecht
Famous critic of JFK investigation passes.
-------
When I was an undergraduate at the University of Pittsburgh, prominent speakers were frequently brought in for students to hear their perspectives on a variety of subjects. It was a different time when public debate on controversial issues was encouraged.
One of the most popular speakers was Dr. Cyril Wecht, who served as a Coroner and Medical Examiner for the city of Pittsburgh. Wecht was a prominent forensic pathologist known for his work on high-profile cases and his expertise in forensic medicine. He also served as the president of both the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and the American College of Legal Medicine. In addition, he authored numerous books and articles on forensic pathology and had been a frequent commentator on legal and forensic issues in the media. He was best known, however, for his criticism of the Warren Commission’ findings concerning the assassination of President Kennedy. In 1972, Dr. Wecht was the first civilian given permission to examine the Kennedy evidence. As I recall, it was standing room only, to hear his spellbinding presentation to that college audience that I was privileged to hear in person - circa 1980. In no uncertain terms, Dr. Wecht proposed that the Warren Commission Report had lied.
Dr. Wecht passed away this week at the age of 93. He lived a fascinating life and as both a physician and an attorney, he was perfectly positioned to serve as the Coroner for Allegheny County in Western Pennsylvania. He was much more, however, than a local coroner since he was consulted on many national high-profile deaths to include Robert F. Kennedy, Sharon Tate, Elvis Presley and JonBenet just to name a few.
His passing gave me pause this week both since my father had known him through local politics in Pittsburgh, and the presentation which I saw that evening on the campus at Pitt. Would someone of Dr. Wecht’s academic accomplishments be allowed to speak on a campus now? His views were not without controversy, and he was of Jewish descent.
It’s a sad question and commentary about the times we live in. Unfortunately, I am confident that I know the answer. This cannot become the new norm.
Hope you enjoy this week’s newsletter. Next Wednesday we will be rolling out a slightly improved look for your enjoyment.

In Search of Sleep
Here are a few ideas.
-------
Sleep is critical to our ability to perform.
According to the National Sleep Foundation, certain foods may help people fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly while others may compromise a person's ability to enjoy a restful night's sleep. In lieu of white bread, refined pastas and sugar-laden baked goods, all of which can reduce serotonin levels, the NSF recommends whole grains. The buildup of serotonin in the brain during periods of wakefulness can contribute to the onset of sleep later in the day. If serotonin levels in their brains are disturbed, then people may experience difficulty falling asleep. The NSF also recommends almonds and walnuts, which contain melatonin, a hormone that helps to regulate the sleep/wake cycles. In addition, foods that are high in lean protein that contain the amino acid tryptophan also may increase the production of serotonin, potentially contributing to a restful night's sleep.

Can We Agree to Disagree?
by Candace SmithThe Etiquette Blog
Candace Smith Etiquette
Biography: Candace Smith, wife of Nobel Prize-Winner Professor Dr. Vernon Smith and owner of the extraordinary blog, “Etiquette for the Business of Life” as featured by BBC, Chicago Tribune and USA Today offers her insights.
-------
The phrase “agree to disagree” often emerges as a last resort. In our increasingly polarized world, where opinions clash like cymbals and compromise seems like a forgotten language, is it simply a cop-out, a way to escape uncomfortable conversations, or can it be a valuable tool for maintaining peaceful coexistence?
On the surface, "agree to disagree" appears dismissive, suggesting an unwillingness to engage in meaningful dialogue. However, a closer look reveals its potential for navigating diverse viewpoints without sacrificing respect or civility. This phrase might be more nuanced than it seems.
Accepting the Limits of Persuasion
Not every conversation is meant to end in a shared conclusion. Sometimes, despite genuine effort, fundamental differences in values, experiences, or interpretations create impassable barriers. Recognizing these limitations allows us to step back and acknowledge the validity of diverse perspectives, even if we don't personally subscribe to them.
Disagreements, especially on sensitive topics, can easily escalate into personal attacks or damage relationships. Agreeing to disagree acts as a ceasefire, preventing further conflict and preserving the connection on other levels. This is particularly important in close relationships where mutual respect and understanding are paramount.
Paradoxically, accepting disagreement can open doors to further exploration. By acknowledging the existence of alternative viewpoints, we become more receptive to learning about them, even if we ultimately disagree. This fosters intellectual curiosity and challenges our own biases, potentially leading to personal growth and deeper understanding.
Rarely are issues black and white. Most matters encompass diverse perspectives, each containing elements of truth or validity. Agreeing to disagree allows us to appreciate this complexity, avoiding the trap of oversimplification and acknowledging the multi-faceted nature of reality.
If You Agree to Disagree as an Easy Escape
Agreeing to disagree is not without its limitations. It can be tempting to use as an easy escape from challenging discussions, especially when dealing with power imbalances and avoiding discord seems the etiquette-ful thing to do. While keeping conversation easy may be the more polite thing to do in some cases, it's crucial to ensure that all voices are heard and respected, even if their opinions differ from the majority.
While acknowledging differences is important, sometimes exploring potential areas of agreement can hinder progress. Before resorting to "agree to disagree," it might be important to simply ask to explore potential common ground and seek collaborative solutions.
Ultimately, "agree to disagree" is not a magic solution, but rather a tool to be used judiciously. When wielded thoughtfully, it can foster tolerance, respect, and understanding in a world brimming with diverse viewpoints. Remember, even when we disagree, we can still strive for civil discourse, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to building a better future.

Finding Bike Friendly Cities

Get-Ready-Set-Move
The freedom to move.
-------
Whether looking to be more eco-conscious or cut down on commuting expenses to deal with ever increasing inflation, more and more people are opting for alternative modes of transportation, such as biking or using public transportation, to commute to work. If you're one of those individuals looking to ditch the car and embrace a greener, cheaper commute, this blog post is for you!
Let's explore tips and insights on how to find the best cities in the United States that cater to bike and public transportation commuters so that when you plan your next relocation, you find yourself in just the right spot!
Research Bike-Friendly Cities:
Look for cities with extensive bike lane networks and infrastructure that prioritize cyclist safety. Cities like Portland, Oregon; Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Boulder, Colorado, are renowned for their bike-friendly amenities.
Check Public Transportation Systems:
Evaluate the efficiency and coverage of public transportation systems in potential cities. Look for cities with well-developed bus and train networks, as well as options like light rail and subway systems.
Consider Bike Commuting Culture:
Explore cities where bike commuting is not just feasible but also culturally embraced. Cities with active cycling communities and events, such as bike races and group rides, indicate a supportive environment for bike commuters.
Assess Bike Infrastructure:
Look for cities with bike-friendly infrastructure, including bike racks, designated bike parking areas, and bike-sharing programs. These amenities make it easier to integrate biking into your daily commute.
Check Commute Times:
Consider commute times and distances when selecting a city. Look for neighborhoods with bike-friendly routes to your workplace or easy access to public transportation hubs.
Research Safety:
Prioritize safety when choosing a city for bike or public transportation commuting. Look for cities with low traffic accident rates involving cyclists and pedestrian-friendly streets.
Explore Bike and Public Transportation Advocacy Groups:
Connect with local bike advocacy groups and public transportation advocates in potential cities. These organizations can provide valuable insights into the biking and transit culture and help you make informed decisions.
Consider Weather Conditions:
Take weather conditions into account, especially if you plan to bike year-round. Look for cities with mild climates or robust bike infrastructure that can accommodate varying weather conditions.
Evaluate Cost of Living:
Assess the cost of living in potential cities, including housing, transportation, and daily expenses. Opting for bike or public transportation commuting can help offset costs associated with car ownership.
Test the Waters:
Before making a final decision, visit potential cities and test out their biking and public transportation systems firsthand. Take a bike ride around the city, use public transit to navigate, and get a feel for the overall commuting experience.
Finding the best cities in the United States for bike and public transportation commuting requires careful research and consideration of various factors. By evaluating bike infrastructure, public transportation systems, commute times, safety, and local culture, you can identify cities that align with your eco-friendly commuting preferences.
Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or new to the world of public transportation, there's a city out there waiting to welcome you with open arms and bike lanes aplenty. Here's to embracing pedal power and navigating the urban landscape with ease and efficiency!

Steps to Guard Your Financial Privacy
Cyber crimes happen every day.
-------
Cyber crimes are a significant concern. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, no less than 422 million individuals were impacted by cyber crime in 2023, and nearly 33 billion accounts are anticipated to be breached by the end of 2024. Cyber crimes are happening every day, even if the public only hears about the largest data breaches.
Financial institutions as well as retailers and other businesses that require the use of personal financial information are obligated to safeguard customer data. According to the Federal Trade Commission, financial institutions protect the privacy of consumers' finances under a federal law called the Financial Modernization Act of 1999, also known as the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act. That law governs banks, securities firms, insurance companies, and companies providing many other types of products and services. The law dictates how financial institutions can collect and disclose customer's personal financial information.
Individuals also have key roles to play in protecting themselves. Though even the best precautions cannot completely secure your financial privacy, every little effort is worth it to reduce your risk of being victimized by data theft. These tips from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority can help individuals safeguard their privacy.
· You have the right to opt out of the sharing of some of your personal information with affiliates and non-affiliates of a financial institution. For example, you can opt out of receiving prescreened credit offers by way of credit bureaus selling information about you to lenders or insurance.
· Increase awareness of phishing scams. These often are emails that appear to come from legitimate firms or financial regulators asking for personal information. These entities would never ask for account numbers, passwords, credit card information, or Social Security numbers through email. Verify all communication with the financial institution by contacting that institution directly at the number listed on your account statement or bill.
· Be aware of where you click online. Never click on a questionable link or download a suspicious email attachment.
· Strong passwords can keep accounts more secure. Resist the urge to use the same password across many accounts. Once that password is compromised, the cyber criminal may be able to try it on your other accounts. Consider using a password manager to suggest and save strong and unique passwords for each account.
· Utilize multifactor authentication whenever it is available. MFA adds an extra layer of protection by using a password as well as a unique code or biometric to unlock the account.
· Conduct all financial business on a personal device on a secure network. Delete the cache and history frequently to avoid leaving a digital trace.
These steps can help protect financial security. Individuals need to be diligent in safeguarding their information from cyber criminals.
Please keep in mind this information should not be considered as financial advice. Investment decisions should be based on individual research and consultation with a qualified financial professional. The value of investments can fluctuate, and past performance is not indicative of future results. Always consider your risk tolerance and financial goals before making investment decisions.

Should You eat Before a Workout?
Understanding eating and exercise.-------
Each person approaches exercise in their own unique way. Some can't wait to get to the gym every day, while others exhibit significantly less enthusiasm about exercise. Some medical professionals say the best approach to exercise is the one that inspires a consistent commitment to physical activity, but various factors, including food, merit consideration when designing a workout routine.
Food provides energy for the body, so it makes sense to eat before a workout. But eating prior to a workout may not be so straightforward for all exercise enthusiasts. An examination of the dynamic between eating and exercise can help athletes find a formula that works for them.
Why eat before exercise?
The Hospital for Special Surgery recommends eating before exercise if it's been two or more hours since your last meal or snack. Doing so can help to restore energy stores prior to an intense or lengthy workout. The HSS notes this approach is especially beneficial for individuals who work out early in the morning, before lunch or after school or work, each of which are times of day when it's typically been awhile since a person has eaten.
How much should I eat before exercising?
It's unlikely anyone is going to want to eat a large meal before a workout. Doing so will undoubtedly affect performance in a negative way, particularly if you're eating shortly before a workout. The HSS notes that the further away a workout is from the time a person eats, the larger and more mixed that meal can be. According to the HSS, the general guideline around eating and exercise is:
· A full meal three to four hours before exercising
· A higher carbohydrate snack two hours before exercising and/or a small, easily digested carbohydrate right up until the start of a workout
What makes for a good pre-workout snack?
If you won't be eating a full meal before a workout, various mini snacks can provide energy without adversely affecting performance. Pre-workout snacks that are low in fat and fiber are ideal, as the body can digest such foods quickly. The HSS notes half a banana, a small serving of applesauce or a handful of crackers or pretzels are a good pre-workout mini snack. A larger snack eaten a little further away from a workout can include some hummus or peanut butter. The Mayo Clinic notes yogurt, a fruit smoothie or a low-fat granola bar also make good pre-workout snacks.
Should I eat during a workout?
The HSS notes it can help to consume some carbs during workouts that last 60 minutes or longer. Doing so can help individuals prolong their endurance and can even help with their timing and concentration.
The relationship between eating and exercise is complicated. Individuals who want to learn more are urged to work with a nutritionist.

Classic Ideas for Wine & Food Pairings
Drink more wine,-------
The renowned writer Ernest Hemingway is credited with saying, "My only regret in life is that I didn't drink more wine." Perhaps if the author had a better understanding of pairing wine with food, he would have enjoyed his wine a bit more often?
Unless you're spending time with a master sommelier or a seasoned oenophile, you're unlikely to be given a hard time if your wine and food pairings are not perfect. Although there is no need to always pair a bottle with food like an expert - and it's certainly alright to break the rules if you're particularly passionate about a specific type of wine - a general knowledge of classic food-and-wine parings can help anyone expand their knowledge and please their palate. And yes, it goes beyond white is for fish and red is for beef. These pairing pointers, courtesy of the experts at Food & Wine, Tasting Table and Wine Folly, can help anyone find the right combination for their dinner table.
Basic methodologies
As you grow more familiar with wine, you'll learn why these tried-and-true suggestions often work.
· Red wines pair best with bold flavored meats (red meat).
· White wines pair best with light-intensity meats (fish and chicken).
· The wine should have the same flavor intensity of the food.
· The wine should be sweeter than the food.
· The wine should be more acidic than the food.
· It is better to match the wine with the sauce than with the meat.
· Think about whether you want contrasting or congruent pairings. Red wines often create congruent pairings while white, sparkling and Rosé will create contrasting pairings.
Congruent versus contrasting
Congruent pairings, according to Wine Folly, create balance in the mouth by amplifying shared flavor compounds. For example, earth wines paired with earthy mushrooms. Contrasting pairings create balance through contrasting flavors. Therefore, a salad with acidity and bitterness may be complemented with a wine that is sweeter and not so acidic, or so may be the case with a fatty, salty food like foie gras.
Common pairings to try
· Mushrooms, lentils and even salmon go great with reds like Pinot Noir or Dolcetto. These wines are light-bodied but also full of savory appeal.
· Champagne and oysters work because Champagne has a touch of fruity sweetness. This helps it cut through salty foods like oysters or even chips.
· Cabernet, and Bordeaux are ideal with steaks and lamb dishes. The tannins in cabernet will cut through the protein and fat in these red meats, while the fat balances out the rich tannins.
· You'll need a wine that pops like Sauvignon Blanc, to go with tangy foods, such as grapefruit or scallops. This white wine also can work with various vinaigrettes or tangy cheeses.
· Chianti is a prized Italian wine made from Sangiovese grapes. High acidity and noticeable tannins will help chianti pair well with high acid foods like those featuring tomato sauces, such as a rich pasta dish.
It may take some time to gain experience pairing wine and foods. However, with a little practice, individuals can perfect their wine pairing skills.

Is a Motorcycle for You?
Riding season is here.-------
Motorcycles share the roadways with cars and trucks. Many enthusiasts enjoy riding motorcycles because they provide a visceral experience with the great outdoors. The feeling of the wind and sun is more pronounced on a bike than behind the wheel of a car.
JD Power says motorcycles account for 3 percent of all registered vehicles in the United States. In 2022, there were 829,892 registered motorcycles in Canada, according to Statistics Canada. Registrations have increased each year since the organization has kept track.
Individuals considering adding a motorcycle to their vehicular portfolio have a lot of options from which to choose. Some may be surprised to find out there are many different types of bikes.
· Cruiser: A cruiser is an American-style motorcycle designed for long journeys. They are large, heavy bikes with handlebars that keep the hands almost parallel to the ground. The seat also provides a relaxed position for the body, and a comfortable suspension corrects irregularities of the road.
· Sportbikes: Sportbikes are cost-effective, reliable and fast. They are easily customizable and come in a variety of sizes. Although they are popular, comfort is not one of the main features of sportbikes. Aggressive body position and a steep rake angle make these less comfortable to ride than other bikes.
· Standard (Naked): These are simple and versatile bikes that have no windshields, a more upright body positioning, and no plastic parts or elements of lining. It is a category of sportbike that is stripped down.
· Chopper: These heavy bikes are designed for leisurely riding. They're traditionally associated with the biker subculture. Choppers will feature wide and high handlebars, many chrome parts, rake out fork, and a low-set seat. Riders sit with their legs extended forward. Although some are mass-produced, most choppers are custom-made.
· Motocross: These bikes are for those serious about dirt riding. Most motocross bikes are not legal for road use and are featured in strictly off-road racing. They're often called dirtbikes.
· Adventure: Adventure bikes are designed for having fun. They are sturdy and usually outfitted with a tall seat height, tall windshield, upright seating positioning, and ample suspension. Some adventure bikes have luggage options and also may come equipped with on-road/off-road tires.
· Touring: A sportier version of cruisers, these motorcycles are designed to take comfort to the extreme. Smooth handling, heated seats, cruise control, and even cup holders make touring bikes perfect for long trips.
· Supermoto: A Supermoto is a single-cylinder motor bike with the fast action of a dirtbike that is allowed on the streets. Its youthful appeal makes it quite popular.
· Scooter: Scooters are less popular in North America than in Europe, but they've gained some steam here in urban areas. They are usually automatic, making them easier to ride for novices. The frame design of scooters is called an underbone, which leaves plenty of space from the rider's legs to the front of the scooter.
Motorcycles come in many different styles, ensuring there's one to suit all types of riders.
