Challenging Times

A time to pause and celebrate the coming of Spring.

-------

We live in challenging and sometimes tragic times as represented by the disastrous bridge collapse in Baltimore yesterday.  Whether or not you celebrate Easter, we hope this Sunday gives you the opportunity to spend time with your family in peace.  It’s a great time to take a moment to pause and celebrate the coming of Spring.

Did You Know?

This Sunday is Easter, but did you ever stop to wonder how it got its name?

Most will celebrate Easter this Sunday, March 31, 2024. Orthodox Christians, on the other hand, celebrate Easter on May 5, 2024. Many religious holidays like Easter are known as "movable feasts," which means they are not fixed dates on the calendar but are celebrated in accordance with the lunisolar calendar. Easter occurs on the first Sunday after the Paschal Full Moon, which is the first full moon of spring, according to the Farmer's Almanac. Easter occurs shortly after the vernal equinox.

Historians are not certain about the precise origins of the name "Easter." Some believe the name can be traced to the English monk Bede, often referred to as "St. Bede the Venerable" or "The Venerable Bede." According to History.com, in his most famous work, Ecclesiastical History of the English People, Bede asserts that the English word "Easter" can be traced to "Eostre" or "Eostrae," which is the pagan Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring. Many historians past and present echo this sentiment and believe Eostre is the namesake of Easter. However, others believe "Easter" comes from the Latin phrase "in albis," which is plural for "alba" (dawn). That phrase became "eostarum" in Old High German, a language that historians have connected to Old English. Though which camp is correct may never be resolved, there's no denying that the word "Easter" represents the same spirit of rebirth that Christians celebrate each spring.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops says the word "Easter" comes from Old English meaning the "East." Since the sun rises in the East and brings light, warmth, and hope, it is a symbol for the rising of Christ who is the true light of the world. The Paschal Candle used during the Easter Vigil is a symbol of this divine light.

Benefits of Weekend Getaways

There is plenty to be said for weekend getaways.

-------

Working oneself ragged is no way to enjoy life. In fact, a person could be doing harm to his or her health by working too much, which may lead to lost productivity and burnout in the long run.

Experts agree that getting away could be good for mental health. According to psychotherapist Jonathan Alpert, who is the author of "Be Fearless: Change Your Life in 28 Days," a weekend trip can boost mental and emotional health. Alpert says smaller vacations even "pack a bigger punch" than longer ones. Neuroscientists have found that getaways can evoke feelings of calm, banish stress and enable the mind to heal. Furthermore, according to a Gallup study, those who make time for regular trips score higher on the Gallup-Well-Being Index. Weekend getaways simply may be easier to schedule than longer vacations.

The following are some ways to make the most of weekend getaways and why these getaways are so beneficial.

· Plan ahead. Weekend getaways generally do not need extensive planning. The logistics are much easier when there are only one or two nights involved in an overnight stay. Sometimes weekend getaways are only day trips, which makes them even easier to set up.

· Bring pets along. Short stays may mean it is easier to bring pets. Quite often hotel chains and even homestay accommodations allow pets with the inclusion of a pet cleaning fee. This saves on having to find a pet sitter or a boarder to watch pets while you are away.

· Book a different locale a few times a month. Weekend getaways are more affordable than lengthier trips, which means you can see various sights without a big investment. Unlike longer vacations that tie travelers to a specific destination for the duration of the trip, weekend jaunts are short stops at different spots. Try various cities and towns on for size.

· Avoid boredom. Anyone who has booked an extended trip away has at times had some boredom set in when the initial wow factor of the resort or trip wears off. In some instances, it may seem as if you've exhausted the list of things to do. Weekend getaways are anything but boring because you're packing so many things to do into a short amount of time.

· Keep a to-go bag packed. When the mood hits you, you can dart off to a weekend escape. Keep a packed bag with some essentials at the ready so there's no overthinking the vacation process.

· Become a loyalty member. Investigate the loyalty programs of various hotel chains. This way if you find a chain you like and book stays regularly you can earn rewards points. These points may be redeemed for upgrades or even free rooms over time.

Weekend getaways are great ways to rest and recharge without the commitment of time and planning required of longer excursions.

Should You Relocate Overseas?

There a lot of considerations.

-------

Relocating overseas for either personal or business reasons may seem romantic, but realities might paint a different picture.   The cost of relocating overseas can vary widely depending on several factors, including the distance, destination, the volume of belongings, and the services you require.

Here are some common expenses to consider:

Shipping and Transportation: This includes shipping your belongings, such as furniture and personal items, which can be a significant expense. The cost depends on the distance and method of transportation (e.g., air, sea, or land).

Visa and Immigration Fees: Depending on the country you’re moving to, you may need to pay for visas, work permits, or other immigration-related expenses.

Housing:The cost of finding and securing accommodation in your new location can vary greatly. You may need to pay rent or a deposit upfront.

Travel Expenses: Flights, travel insurance, and other travel-related costs for you and your family members can add up.

Packing and Moving Services:If you hire professionals to pack and move your belongings, this can be an additional cost.

Storage:If you need to store your items temporarily before or after the move, storage fees can apply.

Insurance: Consider insurance to protect your belongings during transit or while in storage.

Documentation and Legal Fees: You may need to pay for legal documents, such as marriage certificates, birth certificates, and translations, depending on your destination.

Language and Cultural Training: If you’re moving to a place with a different language or culture, you might want to invest in language lessons or cultural training.

Cost of Living:The cost of living in your new country may be higher or lower than your current location, affecting your ongoing expenses.

Taxes: Be aware of any tax implications related to your move, both in your home country and the destination country.

It’s essential to research and plan your international move thoroughly and budget for these various expenses. Costs can range from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands or more, depending on your specific circumstances. Consulting with relocation experts or getting quotes from moving companies can help you estimate your expenses more accurately.

Tips for Handling Anger at Work

by Candace Smith
The Etiquette Blog
Candace Smith Etiquette

Biography:  Candace Smith, wife of Nobel Prize-Winner Professor Dr. Vernon Smith and owner of the extraordinary blog, “Etiquette for the Business of Life” as featured by BBC, Chicago Tribune and USA Today offers her insights.

-------

Handling anger at work isn’t always easily claimed.  When an emotion is labeled as someone else’s fault, trouble is bound to follow.  But applying etiquette-ful behaviors to a tense situation can bring comfort, a sense of competence, and calm to you and others viewing the situation.

Your Work Environment
Here’s a funny quote I saw recently: “I don’t need anger management – I need people to stop making me mad!”  Whether your workplace is relaxed or stressful, unless you work all by yourself, disagreements will arise.  The escalation of an angry situation is just around the corner unless one or all people involved immediately jump in and de-escalate.

Ultimately, the responsibility for managing your anger is your own.  Even if the words or actions of someone you work with lit the flame of your emotions, how you react is your decision and will determine if the flame is extinguished or set ablaze.

Etiquette-ful Actions for Handling Anger at Work
In angry situations, finding connectedness is vital.  Etiquette plays a direct role in determining the outcome of your attempts to connect with someone who is having a hard time handling anger at work.

Five outwardly etiquette-ful actions to help others connect with you:

  • Smile when you speak to someone.
  • Look directly at others when speaking to them.
  • Keep your distance; your body language conveys your being present.
  • Arms to your side, palms open when you speak conveys openness.  Quick or unnecessary movement, keeping your arms crossed, or appearing distracted, shows the opposite.
  • Validating another’s concerns, even if you don’t agree, makes them feel as if they’ve been heard.
Five inwardly etiquette-ful actions that help others connect with you:
  • Let yourself feel the desire to make the angry person feel important.
  • Choose to pay attention!  Keep your phone out of sight, off the table.
  • Stay positive; find something uplifting and appreciative to share.
  • Make true the philosophy that you are there to help.
  • Be firm as you remember to live the values of your business.
Managing Your Own Anger
If you ever find yourself angry at work, here are a few self-care tips to help in the moment until the feeling subsides.
  • Count to 20 while slowly breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth.
  • Say a prayer.
  • Walk awhile outside of your workspace.
  • Find a place to be alone and just breathe.

If you know you are prone to angry moments, think ahead of time of a few strategies for yourself.  Write them down on a notecard.  It matters only that they are written somewhere you can access them easily.

Self-talk during and after experiencing anger or a tense moment can be helpful.  We give ourselves pep talks before important moments, why not do the same for angry moments?   Reminders to yourself such as “you are the only one who can make you look bad” can help rein in a particularly negative reaction.

This statement also reminds you of your responsibility for your own self-presentation.  If someone else is trying to make you look bad, you can more easily thwart their efforts by keeping a cool head.  In fact, the tables might turn.

Handling anger at work, or anywhere else, is best done when you can think clearly to get to the root of what is really happening.  Let your curiosity overrule your reactions.

Innovative Ways to Safe Money Relocating

by Morayma MaKay
Corporate Relocation Consultant & Coach
Get-Ready-Set-Move

The freedom to move.
-------

Embarking on a relocation adventure brings excitement, but it's no secret that moving comes with its own set of financial challenges. Fear not! With a bit of strategic planning and a dash of creativity, you can save money for your move and make the process a smoother journey for your wallet. Let's explore some practical and innovative ways to save for your relocation.

Practical Savings Strategies:

1. Create a Moving Budget:

  • Begin with a clear understanding of your moving expenses. Create a comprehensive budget that includes packing supplies, transportation, and any unforeseen costs. This lays the foundation for your savings plan.

2. Downsize and Declutter:
  • Use the pre-move period as an opportunity to declutter. Sell or donate items you no longer need. Not only will this reduce your moving load, but it can also put some extra cash in your pocket.

3. Meal Planning and Grocery Budgeting:
  • Plan your meals strategically, focusing on using what you already have in your pantry. Cut down on unnecessary grocery expenses by buying in bulk and taking advantage of sales and discounts.

4. Set Up a Moving Fund:
  • Create a separate savings account dedicated solely to your relocation. Treat it like any other monthly bill, contributing a fixed amount regularly. This fund can act as a financial safety net for unexpected expenses.

5. DIY Packing and Preparation:
  • Take charge of the packing process to save on professional packing services. Enlist the help of friends and family, and tackle the packing gradually to avoid a last-minute rush.

  Innovative Savings Hacks:

1. Host a Moving Fundraiser:
  • Throw a moving fundraiser party or virtual event. You can charge a small entrance fee or ask for donations in lieu of gifts. Not only is it a fun way to gather loved ones before the move, but it also contributes to your moving fund.

2. Leverage Cash-Back Apps:
  • Use cash-back apps for your regular purchases. Apps like Rakuten, Honey, and Ibotta offer cash back or discounts on various purchases. Accumulate these savings in your moving fund.

3. Rent Out Unused Space:
  • If you have a spare room, consider renting it out through platforms like Airbnb. This not only generates extra income but also provides an opportunity to meet new people.

4. Sell Customized Items or Services:
  • If you have a creative talent or a skill, offer customized items or services for sale. Whether it's homemade crafts, freelance writing, or graphic design, turning your skills into a small side hustle can boost your moving fund.
5. Swap and Share:
  • Organize a community swap event or use online platforms to exchange items you no longer need for things you do. This not only helps you save money on purchases but also fosters a sense of community.

Relocating doesn't have to break the bank (even though it can sometimes feel like it!). By implementing some practical savings strategies and adding a touch of innovation, you can make your move not only smooth but also budget-friendly.

Remember, every penny saved is a step closer to your new home. Happy saving, and may your relocation be filled with excitement and financial ease!

Investment Strategies

Buying on Bad News

Buy on bad news & sell on good?

-------

Buying stocks on bad news refers to the strategy of purchasing shares of a company when its stock price has dropped due to negative events or news. This approach is based on the belief that the market overreacts to bad news, leading to undervaluation of the stock.

Investors who subscribe to this strategy see an opportunity to buy the stock at a discounted price, anticipating that the negative impact of the news may be temporary or that the market has exaggerated its significance. However, this strategy carries risks, as the bad news may have long-term consequences for the company’s financial health and stock performance. Investors should conduct thorough research and analysis before making investment decisions based on bad news.

I have personally used this strategy for years and it has been mostly successful but it does require patience and discipline.

A good example of a publicly traded stock that has been in the news – not in a positive way – is Boeing (NYSE: symbol BA).  Founded in 1916 by William E. Boeing, the Boeing Company is an American multinational corporation that designs, manufactures, and sells airplanes, rotorcraft, rockets, satellites, and missiles worldwide. As of today, it is trading at approximately $180 and has a 52-week high of $267.54 with a low of $176.25.  It is also near a five-year low. Still, at those price levels it is likely highly held by institutional stakeholders in contrast to mom-and-pop investors.  Boeings recent challenges have been well documented and are too long to list here but might be an interesting play.  The risk, however, would be substantial since it is critical that they quickly correct their perceived production issues.

It is nevertheless a perfect example of this type of strategy.

How much trouble is Boeing in?

Please keep in mind this information should not be considered as financial advice. Investment decisions should be based on individual research and consultation with a qualified financial professional. The value of investments can fluctuate, and past performance is not indicative of future results. Always consider your risk tolerance and financial goals before making investment decisions.

Nutritional Needs Change with Age

How to be healthy at any age.

-------

Healthy eating is important at any age and can set the course for a life of vitality and wellness. Sufficient nutrition can help prevent chronic illnesses and make sure that growing bodies develop properly. As one ages, various changes take place in the body, making healthy eating even more essential.

According to Healthline, nutritional deficiencies can effect aging individuals, which can decrease quality of life and lead to poor health outcomes. Individuals should pay attention to their vitamin and mineral intake at various ages so they do not miss out on important nutrients. As a person ages, here are some approaches to consider.

· Consume fewer calories: According to Connie Bales, PhD, RD, associate director of the Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center at Durham VA Medical Center, people need fewer calories every decade. That's because individuals are moving around less and have less muscle. This causes a decline in metabolic rate.

· Include more nutrient-dense foods: Even though caloric needs go down with age, it's important to pack as much nutrition into the calories a person does consume. That means finding nutrient-rich foods like whole grains, fruits, nuts, beans, vegetables, fish, and lean cuts of meat.

· Consume more lean protein: Muscle loss and loss of strength can develop as a person ages. Healthline says the average adult loses 3 to 8 percent of their muscle mass each decade after age 30. Eating more protein could help aging bodies maintain muscle.

· Eat fortified cereals and grains: The ability to absorb vitamin B12 can decrease as one gets older and with the use of certain medicines. Many health professionals recommend patients get more vitamin B12 by consuming foods enriched with this vitamin. Vitamin supplements may be needed in addition to food.

· Drink more fluids: Health.com says sensation of thirst declines with age. Drinking water and other fluids becomes a priority to stay hydrated. It also helps with digestion.

· Prioritize bone health: Osteoporosis is a concern for older adults, particularly women who have reached menopause. Osteoporosis occurs when bones become brittle and can break from only the slightest bump or fall, says the Mayo Clinic. Vitamin D and calcium help strengthen bones, and older adults may need more of these nutrients.

Individuals should speak with their health care providers and nutritionists for further insight into their changing nutritional needs. Such professionals can help customize diets to address specific health concerns.

These are just a few examples, and Easter meals can vary widely based on cultural traditions, family customs, and regional specialties.

Easter Traditions Around the World

Different cultures have different celebrations.

-------

Easter is a special day for Christians across the globe. While the highlight of Easter celebrations are the religious events, particularly the vigils and church services, Easter fanfare sometimes stretches beyond church walls.

The following are some Easter traditions across the globe:

Bermuda

Celebrants create and fly homemade kites on Good Friday Kitefest, which features bold, geometric designs. It's also traditional to eat codfish and hot cross buns during Holy Week. On Easter Sunday, the faithful participate in sunrise services on various Bermuda beaches.

Costa Rica

Costa Ricans take Holy Week and Easter quite seriously. Each town hosts parades and processions during Holy Week, providing dramatic re-enactments of Jesus' journey through Jerusalem to his crucifixion and resurrection.

England

Good Friday visitors to Trafalgar Square can see a classic dramatization of Jesus' resurrection. "The Passion of Jesus" is a 90-minute performance that attracts thousands of visitors.

France

Many people visit the famed Notre-Dame Cathedral to hear its bells toll throughout Easter Sunday. A fire destroyed a portion of the cathedral roof in 2019 and repairs are still underway. There also are Paris Easter egg hunts. Parisians and tourists also can visit La Sainte Chapelle, which offers Easter concerts consisting of classical music and choral singers.

Israel

Israel is a melting pot of both Jewish and Christian faithful. Easter is a solemn celebration here. In Old Jerusalem, faithful pilgrims and priests walk the Via Dolorosa, which is the same path that Jesus took on the day he was crucified. The Way of the Cross, which is what the procession is called, is among the most amazing sights in the world.

Italy

Easter is special in Italy and particularly in Vatican City, the home of the Pope. The Pope holds a special mass on Easter in Saint Peter's Square, which traditionally draws huge crowds. Elsewhere in Italy, masses take place at area churches and many towns host parades and other celebrations.

Mexico

Holy Week reenactments take place in devout areas of Mexico. Residents in other areas may take part in silent processions through town, or by visiting 12 churches in 12 days.

Easter Wells

Easter wells are colorful, traditional decorations in Germany and Franconian Switzerland. The custom of Osterbrunnen, which started in the early 20th century, includes decorating public fountains and wells with Easter eggs. The tradition begins on Good Friday and continues until two weeks after Easter. According to the Bavarian tourism site www.bavaria.by, before the wells are decorated, they are first cleaned in a ceremony known as "Brunnen fegen," which loosely translates to "sweeping the well." Once cleansed, the well is dressed and decorated. The practice traces back to the belief in water as a life-giving force. Some infants are even baptized in the well's water, and others drink the Easter water as a protection against illness.

Easter Trees

Even though trees may be more widely associated with Christmas, Easter trees are an increasingly popular and festive tradition that trace their roots to Germany. The Easter tree is known as Ostereierbaum in Germany and is a centuries-old custom. Eggs are hung on outdoor tree branches and bushes or are placed on cut branches displayed inside. While the tradition is traced to Germany, German-influenced locales like Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, and the Pennsylvania Dutch region of the United States also are popular places for Easter trees to appear.

When decorating Easter trees, families can use plastic eggs or even real ones. Using a sharp knife or needle, make two small holes in a raw egg. Blow out the inside of the egg until the shell is hollow. Then decorate the egg and thread a ribbon through the holes so it can be hung on the tree. If desired, place sweet Easter treats, such as chocolate eggs or pastel-colored cupcakes, under the Easter tree.

Easter Eggs

Coloring eggs is a beloved Easter tradition. Eggs long have been symbols of fertility and rebirth, making them fitting icons for spring. Dyeing eggs is an entertaining activity, but one that also may have some religious significance.

Easter is a time of celebration and reflection in many parts of the world.

2024 Washington DC Cherry Blossoms

Festival runs Wednesday, March 20 - Sunday, April 14th.

-------

The cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C., typically bloom around late March to early April, depending on weather conditions. The trees were a gift from Japan in 1912 and line the Tidal Basin, creating a stunning pink canopy. The National Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates this event with various cultural events, parades, and performances, attracting millions of visitors each year. It’s a symbol of friendship between the United States and Japan and a significant event in D.C.’s spring calendar.

Yoshino Cherry trees are popular and beautiful trees that flower in the spring. Their masses of pink and white blossoms are one of the first signals that winter has ended. Cherry tree varieties bloom over the course of several weeks, and climate will dictate how early or late these trees will showcase their spectacular flowers.
