Davos and the W.E.F. Controversy

Davos is quiet this week, which is extremely unusual.

Davos is a town in the Swiss Alps, within the Canton of Graubünden. One of the largest ski resorts in Switzerland with a permanent population of approximately only 10,000, and the highest city in Europe,

it is taking a substantial economic hit.  The annual World Economic Forum (WEF) summit scheduled for this week was moved to cyberspace. World leaders have avoided travel because of the pandemic resulting in the predictable consequences to the hospitality industry in this area of the alps.  Being billed as the “Great Reset,” the 2021 WEF is exceedingly controversial, nevertheless, as there is a call to reform capitalism and no matter your political leanings it is something to be aware of as we move out of COVID-19.

When to be”Faithful versus Sincere”?

Many traditional forms of communication have been replaced by email. While email is a quick and convenient medium to exchange a written message, in business, we must still consider the main purpose. As famously stated by former American President, Mr John Quincy Adams, common sense and consideration should be the basis of etiquette and good manners.

When working in the international arena, it is challenging to interpret how your communication may be received, unless you have insight into the culture of the person receiving it.

If the purpose of our email is to build a relationship with a potential client, then we should err on the side of formality until we have a better idea of their communication style. Following are two points to consider.

When writing to someone for the first time, should you use ‘Dear’ or not?
For instance: Dear Mr Smith

In England, for most formal communication, one would start a message with ‘Dear’. On numerous occasions, my clients have expressed disdain for the (perceived) rudeness of an email that started with their name.
For instance: John
Equally ‘Hello John’ or ‘Hello Mr Smith’ are often seen as overly familiar.

A country’s history will impact the perception of what is over familiar. As a monarchy, England holds on to the notion of giving consideration to formality until you know someone better. As an example, traditionally, when meeting someone in person, one does not exist until they have been introduced by someone else. This means you should not introduce yourself, just in case you are addressing a person who is higher ranking. This is a very different approach than the one taken in America, where equality is paramount and so, everyone is seen as being on the same level.

So, when should we be ‘faithful’ versus ‘sincere’?

When writing to a personally named recipient, for instance, ‘Dear Ms Warrington’, we should sign off with ‘Yours sincerely’ (UK) or ‘Sincerely yours’/ ‘Sincerely’ (USA).

If the recipient’s name is unknown, for instance, ‘Dear Sir/Madam’, the formal sign off is ‘Yours faithfully’ (UK) or ‘Faithfully yours’/ ‘Faithfully’ (USA).

By demonstrating an understanding of the etiquette of correspondence, you can enhance the quality of your business relationships. if the potential client responds in a less formal manner, then you can always decrease the level of formality of your style. However, if you start off too informal, it may be very difficult to recover from the poor first impression.

I do understand that the modern era is moving away from using the “complimentary close”, nonetheless, I offer you the above guidelines for the times you may feel it is best to put forward your most polished image.

Foods to Improve Your Mood!

No one is immune to the occasional bad mood. Whether it’s the weather, waking up on the wrong side of the bed or another variable, various factors can have an adverse affect on a person’s mood.

Food is one factor that can have a positive effect on mood. Certain foods have been found to positively affect mood, so incorporating them into your diet may help you stay positive even on those days when you get up on the wrong side of the bed.

· Fatty fish: A study from British researchers published in the Archives of General Psychiatry found that a daily dose of an omega-3 fatty acid called eicosapentaenoic acid, or EPA, helped patients with depression significantly reduce their feelings of sadness and pessimism. Hackensack Meridian Health notes that salmon, albacore tuna, sardines, trout, and anchovies are rich in omega-3 fatty acids.

· Nuts and seeds: The minerals selenium, copper, magnesium, manganese, and zinc have all been linked to mental health, and nuts are rich in each of those minerals. Hackensack Meridian Health notes that almonds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, walnuts, and peanuts are particularly good sources of the immune system-boosting minerals zinc and magnesium.

· Dark, leafy greens: Dark, leafy greens like kale, spinach and collards are rich in iron and magnesium, both of which can increase serotonin levels and help reduce feelings of anxiety. Dark, leafy greens also help the body fight inflammation, which can have a positive effect on mood. A 2015 study published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry found that brain inflammation contributed to certain behaviors, including low mood, that appear during major depressive episodes.

· Dark chocolate: Chocolate lovers may be happy to learn that dark chocolate can improve mood. Another recent study published in the Journal of Proteome Research found that dark chocolate helped to reduce levels of the hormone cortisol, which has been linked to stress. Hackensack Meridian Health notes that, when consumed in moderation, dark chocolate made of at least 70 percent cocoa can help people relax.

Various foods can have a beneficial effect on mood, potentially helping people to stay positive when doing so proves challenging.

Tips to Properly Clean Your Face Mask!

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended that people wear cloth face coverings in public settings where social distancing measures are difficult to maintain. Even as the world begins to unpause, wearing masks seems likely to continue.

According to Penni Watts, Ph.D., RN, an assistant professor of nursing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing, masks are designed not to prevent the wearer from getting ill, but to protect other people from getting the virus. Masks protect others from your germs when you cough or sneeze. They’re also an effective way to help people to avoid touching their faces.

Masks are exposed to the elements and germs each time they are worn, meaning they will require cleaning. Even though Harvard Health suggests COVID-19 may live more readily on hard surfaces than fabric, the CDC urges people to give cloth face masks the same level of care as regular laundry. Masks should be washed and dried often. The CDC offers these tips on how to clean most cloth and fabric masks.

· Fabric face masks should be washed depending on the frequency of use. More frequent use necessitates more frequent washing.

· A washing machine should be adequate for properly washing a face covering. Choose a warm setting for water temperature. Place masks in the dryer afterward.

· More delicate, hand-sewn masks may be washed by hand, suggests The Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab. Lather masks with soap and scrub them for at least 20 seconds with warm or hot water before placing in the dryer.

· For additional sanitation, iron masks on the cotton or linen setting for a few minutes to kill remaining germs.

· If masks are fortified with a filter, such as a coffee or HVAC filter, keep in mind that these filters are designed for single use. Paper filters should be replaced after each use. HVAC filters are washable, but manufacturers warn that their effectiveness decreases with each wash. Medium weight nonwoven interface used as filter material is typically washable.

Various health agencies do not condone using steam or microwaves to clean cloth face masks, as these sanitizing techniques are not as effective as regular laundering. Also, never microwave non-fabric dust or N95 respirator masks if you are using them. They can catch fire or be rendered useless.

Cloth face masks can help safeguard against germs like the novel coronavirus. However, they need to be cleaned regularly to remain sanitary.

How to Avoid Foggy Eyeglasses

How does one counteract the condensation and fogging that occurs from both winter weather and increased mask usage? There are a few different methods. 

Billions of people across the globe need eyeglasses to drive a car, read a book, watch television, and perform a host of other tasks of daily life.

Although glasses are highly effective, people who wear them understand they may have to make a few concessions while doing so. Unlike contact lenses, which sit directly on the eye, glasses rest on the bridge of the nose. They may slightly impede peripheral vision or even slip down if not properly fitted. Those accustomed to wearing glasses in the cold weather understand fogging of the lenses is a nuisance they may be forced to confront. That nuisance became even more profound when masks became a must-have accessory to help curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Glasses may fog due to the formation of condensation on the lens surface, which happens when moving from a cold outdoor environment into a warm indoor one. This is a problem that has affected eyeglass wearers for some time, including health professionals who often wear masks. The issue has become even more widely known due to the sheer number of people who have been wearing face masks as a public health safety measure.

So how does one counteract the condensation and fogging that occurs from both winter weather and increased mask usage? There are a few different methods, but eyeglass wearers should always consult with an optometrist to verify the safety and efficacy of any method before trying it.

Use soapy water

A 2011 study published in the Annals of The Royal College of Surgeons of England found that washing eyeglasses in soapy water and shaking off the excess can help reduce fogginess. Afterward, let the spectacles air dry before putting them back on. The soapy water leaves behind a thin surfactant film that reduces surface tension and causes the water molecules to spread out evenly into a transparent layer. This can help prevent fogging.

Use a commercial product

Anti-fogging products are widely used to prevent fogging of scuba masks or ski goggles.

Get a mask that fits tightly

Make sure the mask fits securely over the nose, advises The Cleveland Clinic. Also, a mask with a nose bridge will help keep warm exhaled breath from exiting up to the glasses. Use your glasses to help seal the mask on your face by pulling the mask up higher on the nose.

Block breath with a tissue

The AARP suggests placing a folded tissue between your mouth and the mask. The tissue will absorb the warm, moist air, preventing it from rising up to reach the glasses.

Adjust the fit of glasses

Choosing glasses that sit further away from the face can improve air circulation and reduce the formation of condensation.

Consider other options

If these tricks seem like a lot of work, you also can speak to an eye doctor about contact lenses or eye surgery.

Fogging of glasses has been a problem for some time, but has become more widespread thanks to the use of masks during the pandemic.
