Big Business & the Super Bowl!

The Super Bowl is the culmination of the National Football League season, which traditionally begins in early September and ends in late December or early January. The Super Bowl is one of the most anticipated professional sporting events each year.

In most years, around 75,000 fans pack the stadium hosting the game to watch the Super Bowl in person, and millions of people around the globe tune in to view the live simulcast, typically at private parties with friends or alongside fellow fans in sports bars. However, this year Super Bowl watch parties are expected to look quite a bit different.

The 2021 Super Bowl may set the record for the smallest crowd in attendance due to the COVID-19 virus. The game is slated to be played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla., and ESPN reports that the NFL is planning for 20 percent seating capacity at the game. Fans are expected to wear masks and will sit in pods separated by six feet. That capacity restriction would place around 13,000 fans in the stadium. Super Bowl I, which took place in 1967, was the only Super Bowl in history not to sell out, and that drew a crowd of 61,946 fans.

While scoring a ticket to the hottest game in town is often an expensive endeavor, with capacity restrictions for this year’s game it likely will be even more difficult for die-hard fans to attend the game in person. Instead, individuals can view the game on CBS or stream it through CBS All Access. My wife and I were fortunate enough to attend the last Super Bowl held in Tampa in 2009 between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals.  It was a wonderful experience, but even though we had great tickets – Snoop Dogg was 8 rows behind us –  I am not sure it was worth the expense and time traveling.

Super Bowl LV will be Tampa’s fifth Super Bowl — and the third at Raymond James Stadium. The enormous exposure of the Super Bowl generates millions of dollars in advertising revenue for the NFL each February. For example, the advertising revenue from the 2019 Super Bowl, was estimated at approximately 336 million U.S. dollars. That does not include merchandise sales or any of the other revenue streams.  It is one of the biggest single day sports events in the world drawing high television ratings each year.

American football is no longer relegated to the boundaries of the United States, as it is becoming a global sport. According to the International Federation of American Football, there are 80 countries with organized federations governing the game. Plus, thousands of youth and adult leagues exist all over the world. Even though soccer has long been a global sport, it seems the other kind of “football” is quickly catching up.

The sport known as American football was borne out of the English sports of association football (soccer) and rugby. During the late 19th century, elite Northeastern colleges took up the sport, playing a soccer-type game with rules adopted from the London Football Association. Intercollegiate matches began to spring up at schools such as Rutgers, Princeton, Harvard, and McGill University. Rugby-type rules became preferential among players and spectators.

Walter Camp, known affectionately as the “Father of American Football,” transformed the rugby-style game into the one that resembles American football today. Camp brought two key innovations to the game. The opening “scrummage” was eliminated, and a rule was introduced that required a team to give up the ball after failing to advance down the field a specific yardage. Camp also developed the quarterback position, lines of scrimmage and the scoring scale used in football today.

Early games were controversial because of the high rate of injury. Even President Theodore Roosevelt stepped in to ask collegiate teams to revise regulations to make the game less brutal. The committee overseeing the rules would later become known as the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Thanks largely in part to the popularity of college football, professional football began to gain traction with the public. The American Professional Football Association was formed in 1920. That league would later become the National Football League. The first televised NFL game occurred in 1939. Eventually, American football’s popularity would explode.

Cheerleaders were introduced to the game in the 1960s. Currently, the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders are the most famous squad. Six teams in the NFL do not have cheerleaders: the Chicago Bears, the Cleveland Browns, the Detroit Lions, the New York Giants, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Green Bay Packers.

Football games typically last around 3 hours. Average attendance for an NFL game is 66,957 spectators.

American football has become a multi billion-dollar industry. What developed on college campuses has grown into a worldwide phenomenon.

Americans Welcome in Switzerland!

Since the United States is the world’s largest national economy, it is understandable that US investors think that it is fine to hold all of their investments within US borders in US dollars. Over-weighting investments in their home country is understandable, but a home-bias isn’t optimal.

While the American stock market has been incredibly strong, and by some definitions qualifies for having the longest bull market in history, it hasn’t always been that way and it’s unlikely to maintain that streak forever. It’s impossible to predict what will happen with the US stock market going forward, but, historically, US stocks have also seen long periods of under-performance compared to international stocks.

Owning an US-centric portfolio can lead to sub-optimal risk-adjusted returns. According to best practices in portfolio management the volatility of an investment portfolio is reduced by adding international diversification to the overall wealth strategy. Global diversification helps to mitigate the risk of local downturns while capitalizing on growth over the long term.

Considering that world’s equity assets make up over 50% of invested assets versus the US’ 43%, it makes sense to include a good portion of diversified international assets in a portfolio to reduce the risk of over-weighting one particular country.

What percentage of an American investor’s portfolio should be invested internationally? Some advisors will claim that 50% is fitting, while others suggest anywhere between 5 and 30%. Beginners may choose a smaller percentage, others more comfortable with going global up to 30% or more.

True international diversification means that a portfolio will never be the portfolio with the highest returns, but it will also generally be better equipped to handle local crises and downturns. Appropriately designed, an internationally-diversified portfolio not only helps to avoid the risk of local downturns, but also to capitalize on global growth over the long term.

Holding some emerging market mutual funds at a local bank, even in other currencies, is not true international diversification. Going to another jurisdiction outside of the United States, to other non-American financial institutions, holding other foreign investments and other currencies is the real thing when it comes to effective risk diversification. Engaging a wealth manager with in-depth international experience and a global outlook with a different perspective than a local investment adviser leads to true international diversification.

US financial professionals for the most part, understandably focus on the US market, American financial institutions and US dollar investments. However, to achieve greater resiliency for an overall portfolio through international diversification, a global-oriented wealth manager will target different investments than a domestic advisor. Holding a portion of a portfolio in a bank outside of the American banking system provides institutional risk diversification and greater flexibility. Currency diversification provides a hedge against a falling US dollar. The prudent investor shouldn’t walk around blindfolded but should prepare for bumps which may arise along their home-market roads.

Where to Go? Welcome to Switzerland!

With the turbulence of the past left behind, Switzerland remains the global leader for cross border private wealth management with a world share of over 25%, of which about half is from investors abroad.

The highest level of economic and political stability, neutrality, high-quality services and extensive expertise and experience is Switzerland’s claim to fame for its long-term success as a leading, innovative financial center. Especially during times of crisis and increasing volatility, the world’s wealthy turn to Switzerland as a safe haven for their assets. Recently, Switzerland has been named the world’s most resilient country best able to handle the pandemic crisis and it’s aftermath.

The Swiss traditions of reliability, continuity and excellence and a high regard for privacy and discretion in an increasingly transparent world are qualities appreciated by astute international investors concerned about the preservation of their assets.

Switzerland: Perhaps the safest place for assets
in an increasingly unsafe world!

Swiss wealth managers registered as an Investment Adviser with the Securities and Exchange Commission in the United States focus on providing US tax-compliant wealth management services to US persons domiciled in the United States and abroad.

Providing services, giving advice, telephone calls, correspondence and personal meetings with clients, or promotional activities for potential clients and strategic agreements with US business partners are allowed without restrictions. US reporting requirements are also clear and the necessary, accurate documents are provided in a timely manner to fulfill reporting requirements and tax obligations.

Americans are welcome!

A relationship can easily be established with a Swiss SEC-registered wealth manager and an internationally-diversified portfolio held with a Swiss bank that welcomes American clients can be set up without leaving home. The Swiss wealth manager of choice handles every step of the way.

Swiss SEC-registered wealth managers range from larger, bank-associated firms to the US-focused entities of Swiss private banks as well as smaller and more personal independent wealth management boutiques. Minimum amounts of investment start at USD 100,000, USD 250,000, USD 500,000 or 1 mn or more depending on the individual wealth manager. While travel to the US to meet with clients and advisers was regularly on the program, it is on hold at the moment. Nevertheless, Swiss wealth managers are up-to-date with online meetings and conferences and Switzerland is never more than a phone call or click away.

Swiss SEC-registered investment advisors are also happy to collaborate with American financial professionals and other advisors in co-counseling their clients to develop an internationally-diversified portfolio to complement a US-based portfolio already in place.
Finding a suitable Swiss SEC-registered wealth manager is easy.  The Swiss platform, AW★SWITZERLAND lists them all, in an easy-to-access manner, individually, alphabetically and regionally.

Getting the touch and feel of a wealth manager of choice before an initial contact by comfortably and efficiently browsing through their listings with access to their websites, SEC registrations, ADV Part 2 and Part 3 brochures with information on company size, assets under management, minimum amounts of investment, strategies, fees etc. makes doing the homework and narrowing down the wealth manager of choice easy. An initial email or conversation will start the process.

Brain-Healthy Habits to Embrace

Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues.

The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association.

Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes.

Exercise

Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory.

The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels.

Quit smoking

The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels.

Eat healthy foods

Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues.

Consume caffeine

Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels.

Work the brain

Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them.

A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together.

Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

Eat Healthy during the Super Bowl

The sports landscape changed dramatically in 2020. Professional sports leagues were forced to interrupt and/or delay their seasons, while many amateur athletes, including college and scholastic players, were told their seasons would not take place in 2020.

Despite those delays and cancellations, many athletes are competing this fall and winter. And that means fans will likely gather to cheer on their favorite teams.

Game day gatherings are a great way to make sports more fun. But they also can compromise people’s efforts to eat right, as traditional tailgate fare is not always so healthy. Thankfully, there are ways to eat healthy on gameday without forgoing fun.

1. Learn your calorie counts.

Education might be your greatest ally if you want to stay the dietary course on game day. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, popular game day fare like beer and chicken wings are high in calories. Beers vary depending on which type you’re drinking, but 12-ounce light beers typically contain around 100 calories apiece. The USDA also notes that a half dozen chicken wings typically come in at just under 700 calories, though that number will increase when dipping the wings into blue cheese or ranch dressing or slathering them in barbecue sauce. Understanding how high in calories these staples can be may compel you to opt for healthier, lighter fare, such as vegetables and water.

2. Pay attention to how much you’re eating.

A 2014 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association: Internal Medicine found that the amount of food people eat while watching something is influenced by what they’re watching. Conducted by researchers at Cornell University, the study found that people ate considerably more while watching action-packed entertainment than they did while watching more sedate programs like talk shows. Researchers concluded that the action-packed programs distracted people from how much they were eating. If you want to limit how much you eat while watching the big game, make a conscious effort to track your consumption, even making a small snack bag before the game begins and eating only that once it starts.

3. Make your own foods.

When you make your own food for game day, you control what you’re putting into your body. Homemade snacks that are low in calories and don’t contain much sugar can help you stay the dietary course more effectively than brownies, chips and nachos.

Game day can quickly derail diets if fans aren’t mindful of what they eat. But staying the dietary course on game day is easier than sports fans may think.

Tattoos

Tattoos are a form of body modification that dates back to 3250 B.C.

Like them or not, millions of people across the globe have them. Tattoos are seemingly everywhere.

Tattoos are a form of body modification that dates back to 3250 B.C. The oldest known person to have a tattoo was found beneath a glacier in the Alps. His body displayed more than 60 tattoos, composed mainly of simple dot and line designs.

The tattoos of today are much more complex and colorful. According to Tattoodo, tattooing involves the use of a tattoo machine that has groupings of needle points to push into the skin. Tattoo ink is injected directly into the dermis, or the second layer of skin. A University of Arizona study found that nearly every brand of tattoo ink uses different ingredients, and there are no regulations governing tattoo ink. Pigments include heavy metals, original minerals and vegetable- or plastic-based colors. Inks also use a carrier to keep the ink more evenly mixed. Alcohols, distilled water and propylene glycol are some common carriers.

A recent study from Psychology Today found that people with tattoos are more likely to be “experience seekers.” In addition, a poll released by the Oxygen Network and Lightspeed research indicates that 59 percent of women in the United States have tattoos compared to only 41 percent of men.
