The Age of Aquarius

In the late 1960s, there was a hit song by a group named the 5thdimension call “The Age of Aquarius.”  It was also made famous as a song in the Broadway musical “Hair.”  The song became one of the anthems of the 1960s Flower Children who rejected conventional society and advocated love, peace, and simple idealistic values.  Only recently, did I become aware to the full meaning of the term.  Many consider “The Age of Aquarius” to also represent the age of reason in human development.  Well, it’s pretty hard to image we are living in the age of reason.

In the last few weeks alone, we have:  1) Joe Rogan, a podcaster with a following exceeding 11 million, being targeted for censorship by Neil Young and other former hippies.  2) The Durham probe in the United States unearthing potentially substantial evidence that Trump was indeed spied upon as both a Presidential candidate and then in the White House as President with almost no media coverage.  3) Mr. Putin massing thousands of his troops on the border of Ukraine for a potential invasion.  4) Crime hitting statistical highs in numerous US cities with local District Attorneys turning a blind eye. 5)  The US inflation rate hitting 7.5% the highest since 1982 when interest rates were over 16% and the economy was in the middle of a recession.

"Almost Cut My Hair” by Crosby, Stills Nash & Young
Almost cut my hair.
It happened just the other day.
It's gettin' kinda long
I coulda said it wasn't in my way,
But I didn't and I wonder why
I feel like letting my freak flag fly

Hippies for censorship?   The world indeed seems to be a turned upside-down. Perhaps worst of all we are becoming numb to it all.  Just saying ...

"I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use."   Galileo Galilei

Philanthropy is Good for the Soul

The Mayo Clinic Health System says researchers have attempted to measure the benefits that volunteers receive from their volunteer efforts. It has been dubbed a "helper's high." Various health benefits have been noted, but the perks go beyond that.

· Make new friends: Volunteerism is a great way to make new friends and strengthen existing relationships. Having common ground, like a volunteer activity, is a great way to build a friendship with like-minded individuals.

· Increase social skills: Volunteering enables you to meet new people from all backgrounds. You also may be placed into different situations and have to act on the fly. This can help you develop social relationship skills.

· Help build community: The Corporation for National & Community Service says that volunteers help strengthen their communities through volunteer service. Connections are made with the people you are helping and with other volunteers.

· Improve self-esteem: When teens or young adults volunteer, they get positive responses to their efforts, which can improve their self-esteem. Self-esteem can keep people away from drugs or alcohol or potentially compulsive behaviors.

· Helps stave off dementia: There is some evidence that people who volunteer may be at a lower risk for dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. This is particularly helpful for senior volunteers.

· Overcome loneliness: The Campaign to End Loneliness indicates that close to 45 percent of people in the United States and the United Kingdom. admit to feeling lonely. Volunteering is a simple way to reverse such feelings.

· Reduce stress levels: By devoting time spent in service to others, people can get a sense of meaning and appreciation that helps them to slow down. That can help them feel less stress and all the negative consequences that come with stress.

Volunteers often walk away from their experiences benefiting as much as the organizations that they chose to help.

Crowdfunding is another way to give back and can be a great way to raise money for a good cause.

The effectiveness of crowdfunding can be seen in just how much money is raised through this relatively recent platform each year. According to the small business financial resource Fundera, crowdfunding campaigns raise $17.2 billion each year in North America. But raising money and having a successful campaign are not necessarily the same thing.

Crowdfunding platforms differ, but some return donations if the campaign's financial goal isn't met. People who want to start a crowdfunding campaign to support a good cause should know that, according to Fundera, campaigns that raise at least 30 percent of their goal within their first week are more likely to reach their goal.

One way to improve the chances of being successful is to include videos in your solicitation efforts. Fundera notes that crowdfunding campaigns with videos earn 105 percent more money than those without videos. In addition, campaign organizers should not downplay the effects of providing routine updates to followers. Data from Fundera indicates that campaigns that regularly updated followers earned 126 percent more money than campaigns that did not provide updates.

The Historic Bond Fraud

Historic Bond Fraud -  Historical bonds are those bonds that were once valid obligations of American or international entities but are now worthless as securities. They have become a favorite tool of scam artists. We mention them here in response to several recent conversations. Please use extreme caution since there seems to be an uptick in this activity.

Business Etiquette

Good Manners Make a Beautiful Life

by Candace Smith
The Etiquette Blog
Etiquette for the Business of Life

A fun children’s book that still sits on my bookshelf.  It’s titled, Manners Can Be Fun! By Munro Leaf.  Leaf introduces the book by declaring that a major triumph of life for a child (and adults) is to discover that there is pleasure in tasks and chores if only one can see it.

The first chapter sets the scene by stating that having good manners is really just living with other people pleasantly.  “If you lived all by yourself out on a desert island, others would not care whether you had good manners or not.” But when others are added it matters a lot.

The book humorously shows why living without others would not be fun.  It’s up to us to make things pleasant and fun for people we are with even as we enjoy our own activities.

Social Acceptance

As we define ourselves with our manners, knowing and practicing etiquette rules creates a more socially acceptable person and the impressions you make will be lasting.

You may feel satisfaction when making an apology and having it accepted and appreciated, feel pleasure in seeing that a door held open for you is done out of courtesy, and feel happiness when being with friends who appreciate a good joke now and then.  Each of these experiences are part of the fun of living in the world with others.

Realizing that your relationships will be better when you use good manners, your confidence in yourself will grow stronger, and your ability to be mindful and present will increase.

Good Manners Show Respect

When you show respect, you earn respect.  Your good manners add to your delightful and charming personality and help keep you happy.  This “you” will no doubt be motivated to help others be their best and forgive them when they are not.

Your children and those with whom you work will no doubt be influenced by the example you set in living an etiquette-ful life. When you refrain from over-reacting, conflicts are more easily assuaged.  Your sympathy and understanding will go a long way in meetings and family gatherings and your presence will act as a magnet and inspiration to others to be the best they can be.  People will think highly of you and isn’t that one of the most fun parts of life?

Good manners and etiquette help you stay composed and calm in any situation.  You can breathe easier when facing any personal challenge of health or circumstance as an outcome of living the faith that you’re doing all you can to be present and available to others who need encouragement during the same times.

Also, “goofing up” in whatever you’re doing can be remedied by the strength you’ve gained from practicing your etiquette skills during any kind of failure.  The qualities and attributes of your good manners will see you through any hard time and can even change or reverse the effects of bad events dramatically.

And finally, they help you remember that any struggle you face, no matter how hard, can be eased by the inner sense of propriety in knowing you are being the best person you can be in any situation

What could be more fun than this?  Living in the circles of friends, colleagues and family while having and holding your own special and unique demeanor is part of living a beautiful life.

Exercise or Rest?
Listen to Your Body & Mind

by Nancy Hovde
Life Empowerment Coach
UberEmpowerment.com

Living a lifestyle that includes regular exercise is a great way to maintain a healthy body and mind. Studies show that regular exercise decreases your risk for chronic disease such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and boosts your immune system. But what do you do when you are sick with a cold or dealing with more than the usual amount of mental or emotional stress in your life? The choice to proceed with your regular workout routine, when you are not feeling up to par, is very individual.

Body: Physical Signs to Exercise or Rest

Business Professionals are busy and understand the importance of including exercise as one of their healthy habits, so it is normal to want to continue working out even when you are feeling sick, or simply tired and run- down. However, it can be helpful to keep some guidelines in mind.

Sick/illness
When your body has physical symptoms, such as an earache, stuffy nose or allergies, generally, it is safe to continue working out at a moderate intensity and for a shorter period, if you are really feeling up to it. Always listen to your body. You may have heard of the saying: “above the neck” rule that advises when to continue with exercising.

However, when your body has achy joints, chest/lung congestion, coughing or fever you may want to skip the workout, stay home and rest until you feel recovered. Even with just an earache or typical cold, if you are experiencing any dizziness, this can throw off your equilibrium which could lead to injuring yourself. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, you may want to seek medical help and, I would suggest confirming with your doctor when the best time is to return to your workouts.

Injury
The general rule of thumb is that you shouldn’t return to your workouts until the pain, swelling, and stiffness have improved a lot. If you push too soon, this could actually end up making your recovery time longer or even make your injury worse. It is best to get the green light from an expert, such as your doctor and I encourage clients to do so, because depending on your injury, there are certain types of exercises and workouts you can turn to during your recovery.

Mind: Mental Signs to Exercise or Rest

We have all experienced that mental urge when we absolutely, just really need a workout! This is generally when we may be feeling stressed, anxiety, or a bit depressed. This is a mental sign to exercise and listen to our mind and body. Go get that jog in or gym time!

However, there are also times, when mentally, we need a rest from our daily workout. The physical signs of when not to workout, are sometimes more obvious than the mental signs. When you are an ambitious business professional, who strives to stay on track with career, personal and wellness goals, recognizing mental signs to pass up a workout can be tough. Exercise makes us feel so good, helps manage anxiety and stress, so why would we not want to workout?

Changes in Mental Energy Levels and Mood
You may be experiencing lack of motivation for that class or workout you generally look forward to. Or maybe you feel overwhelmed with life and that you are not finding enough time to fit in one of your hobbies. This can be a good time to shift your workout routine either with a different type of workout, a shorter time workout or simply take a day or two or more for rest. If you are in a constant state of self-discipline, regularly using that uber willpower and determination in your business, career, life, plus with your wellness goals, you can eventually end up in a state of resistance. You are no longer in a state of balance. But, taking a break can help to recharge, reset your determination and refuel your willpower so you can return to your workout routine and hit it with the intensity you love.

Work/Life Balance
Take special notice when your life has more than the usual juggling of work, family, life events, social time, plus your exercise goals. This can be a lot to balance and at times, when life is extra busy, this can take a toll on you mentally. Don’t be afraid to take a mental downtime day or two and focus on other areas of your life that need to be taken care of. I generally suggest to clients to schedule at least one rest day per week, both for the physical and mental benefits, as the body and mind need time to recover. These are what we call rest days. Rest days look like an active rest day, meaning they are for catching up on errands, completing projects around the home or enjoying a hobby or other activities. Be sure you feel you’ve had enough time to feel rested and restored before returning to your usual workout routine.

Workout Tips During Rest/Recovery for Body & Mind

So what type of workouts could you consider when taking a physical rest or mental break?
Of course, as stated above, depending on your illness or injury, be sure you have the green light from an expert before proceeding with any type of exercise. Here are a few ideas:
  • Going for a walk is a great way to stay active when you are not feeling up to your usual workout routine and one way to stay on track with your wellness goals. Being out in nature and getting some fresh air can do wonders for your body and mind.
  • Modify your current workout intensity and time period to accommodate your energy level. A lower intensity and shorter workout can actually be the best option when you are just getting back into your routine and/or needing to slow things down a bit or change things up.
  • Yoga or stretching keeps your body flexible and your mind calm.

Remember to stay hydrated!

Hire a Personal Chef

More than ever, Americans are pressed for time. Between a grueling commute, raising children, and a day full of Zoom meetings, who has time to cook a nutritious dinner? As time becomes one of our most precious commodities, we often rely on quick but unwholesome mealtime solutions such as high calorie fast food, fattening take out, or frozen entrées. Enter the newest weapon in the fight against the daily grind: personal chef services.

A less costly alternative to a full-time private chef, personal chefs develop customized meal plans based on a client's specific tastes and dietary objectives. Entering the client's home with pots, pans, and fresh foods, the chef will prepare one to two weeks of entrées that are conveniently packaged, labeled, and ready to heat.

David Fischbein, President of Big City Chefs, a nationwide personal and private chef service brand operating in nearly a dozen major metropolitan markets, notes, "Our clients tell us they feel more productive and relaxed by reducing the time they previously spent cooking, grocery shopping, or eating out at pricey restaurants." He adds that clients rave about the company's hand-picked professional chefs, who include veterans from the restaurants of celebrity chefs such as Wolfgang Puck and Emeril Lagasse.

According to Fischbein, "Personal chef services provide a convenient and affordable luxury that allows Americans to reclaim their stressful lives.
