February 2023
------

Welcome to February 2023!  January seemed to fly by, didn’t it?

A lot will be happening during February.  We have a Full Moon on the 5th, the Super Bowl on the 12th, Valentine’s Day on the 14th, Mardi Gras; Fat Tuesday on the 21st and Ash Wednesday on the 22nd.  A lot of cross-culture happenings crammed into 28 days of the shortest month.   All occurring when many are still trying to write out their New Year’s resolutions.

If your one of your resolutions for 2023 is to get in shape, here are some quick and easy adds to help you stay on course.

· Wake up earlier. Waking up a half hour earlier each day can have a substantial impact. That small amount of extra time can be devoted to meditation, deep breathing exercises or even some yoga stretches.

· Move around more frequently. Many people with office jobs spend hours sitting in front of computers. A sedentary lifestyle can have an adverse effect on overall health. Set a timer or use a reminder on a fitness tracker to remind you to get up and move around for a little bit every hour.

· Eat more vegetables. Vague goals like "eating better" are difficult to maintain because there is no specific goal to achieve. Rather, a resolution like eating a fruit or vegetable each day at every meal is something measurable. Vegetables can be hidden in favorite foods, such as desserts. Swap pasta noodles for spiralized zucchini as another easy fix.

· Stand straighter. Posture tends to decline with age, advises AARP. This can cause the spine to lose flexibility. Stretches to maintain posture can help anyone stand straighter and improve long-term health.

· Add "bursts" to your walk. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic tout the benefits of interval training. While high-impact workouts may not be appropriate for everyone, adding little speed bursts to a daily walk can provide significant health benefits. Aim for 30 to 60 seconds of rapid walking at regular intervals to shake up the workout.

· Drink more water. Increasing water intake can help you feel fuller, thus reducing the likelihood that you will overeat. Gradually increase your water intake by adding a few ounces each day until drinking water becomes rote.

· Take a workout outside. Switch up your normal routine by making use of the great outdoors to exercise. Instead of three miles on the treadmill or elliptical machine at the gym, opt for three miles on a local hiking trail.

No matter your specific asperations for 2023, stay with us and we promise to help keep you on pace with fresh ideas and unique perspectives.

Hope you enjoy this week’s edition of “Global Common Cents.”

Impact of Reading on Personal Health

Reading can have a real & positive impact on health.

-------

Books transport people to different times, provide a sense of escapism and introduce readers to different schools of thought. Individuals may read for pleasure and/or to expand their intellectual horizons.

It's important to note that reading also may help improve mental and physical health. With so much to gain from reading, now is a great time to embrace those book clubs, resolve to read more and explore how picking up a good book may be just what the doctor ordered.

Reduces stress

Immersing yourself in a story requires focus and concentration. According to researchers at the University of Sussex, it took just six minutes of reading for study participants to experience slower heart rates and reduced muscle tension.

Stress is one of the biggest threats to overall health, as the stress hormone cortisol can lead to inflammation in the body that may impede the immune system, according to Piedmont Health. Finding ways to reduce stress, including through activities like reading, is a win for anyone who wants to improve his or her health.

Impacts longevity

According to a recent study, "A chapter a day: Association of book reading with longevity," by Bavishi A, Slade M.D., reading exerts its influence on longevity by strengthening the mind. Reading positively impacts the way the brain creates synapses, optimizing neurological function. It also expands vocabulary, and helps with memory.

Changes the brain

A 2014 study published in Neuroreport determined reading involves a complex system of signaling and networking in the brain. As one's ability to read matures, these networks become stronger and more sophisticated. MRI scans found that brain connectivity increased throughout studied reading periods and for days afterward.

Increases empathy

Through literary fiction, readers are exposed to the situations, feelings and beliefs of others. This can help a person develop a greater ability to empathize with others, according to Healthiline.

Helps improve sleep

Reading is an effective way to wind down and relax before going to bed. It can be a positive nighttime ritual, provided one reads a paper book or utilizes an e-reader that is not backlit, as bright lights from digital devices may hinder sleep quality. In fact, doctors at the Mayo Clinic often suggest reading as part of a regular sleep routine.

Reduces depressive feelings

Individuals diagnosed with depression may feel isolated and estranged from other people. Books may reduce those feelings by helping a person temporarily escape his or her world into another. Also, books can serve as a common ground through which conversations over shared interests can begin with others.

Reading has many positive health benefits, which is why resolving to read more can be beneficial.

The Food, Weather & Language are Intoxicating!

-------

We love Italy.  The food, weather, people & language are simply intoxicating.  It is obvious that we are not alone.  All throughout the Internet, you can find information about traveling to this beloved vacation spot.  Many, however, dream about living in Italy.  Perhaps you have even contemplated retiring to your own rustic farmhouse, like the one depicted in the movie "Under the Tuscan Sun."  Recently, we came across the video (link offered below) which delves into the particulars of buying property in this wonderful location and thought it worthy to bring to your attention.

A range of tax incentives, relatively lower prices and the potential for working remotely has kindled the desire to buy a first or second home in Italy.  There are some restrictions on who can and can’t buy property in Italy, however, it’s largely seen as a “no restrictions” country. Within the video an attorney discusses the basics that you should be aware of if this move is a consideration.

Learning from Personal Offenses

by Candace Smith
The Etiquette Blog
Candace Smith Etiquette

Biography:  Candace Smith, wife of Nobel Prize-Winner Professor Dr. Vernon Smith and owner of the extraordinary blog, “Etiquette for the Business of Life” as featured by BBC, Chicago Tribune and USA Today offers her insights.

-------

When someone offends us, it usually plunges us into an emotional experience. But remaining mindful and learning from personal offenses will serve us greatly.

Learning involves acquiring knowledge and skills and knowing how to be in the world. We grow intellectually, ethically, and socially by engaging with others and exercising patience with other points of view as well as the people who express them.

Emotional Control

Becoming offended invades a person’s learning space. Pridefulness surfaces and we fool ourselves into perceiving injury. Emotional barriers go up and communication disconnect prevails as personal hurt leads to the assignment of motives and blame. “She meant to create that problem because she is jealous.”

As parents and teachers, when a child acts out and throws a toy at a sibling when they’re mad, we acknowledge and then help the child get out of the mad as we want to help them learn to reason and intervene emotion. “Kelly, I see that you’re mad. Let’s sit here until your calmness returns and we’ll go from there.”

As adults, we forget that acknowledging our emotions is key to learning from personal offenses. Instead, we often try to hide our emotions and fool ourselves into thinking we have control of them. Unfortunately, this only allows the offense to fester and plays into our imaginations where entire cases are made up against the person or persons who offended us, showing up later as gossip or shunning.

Healthy emotional control can only be achieved when we acknowledge our emotions, know that we are okay to feel a certain way, and decide how to respond to a situation knowing how we feel. This process allows us to honor how we feel while taking responsibility for any reaction or response to personal offenses.

The Best Lessons in Learning from Personal Offenses

Examining certain situations and learning from personal offenses has led me to one great lesson: there are times when the person offending has no clue they did so. They may have made an off-handed comment without thinking or didn’t consider the way in which they told you something and the way you heard it was offensive.

The bottom line is it never hurts to give others the benefit of the doubt. And if the opportunity presents itself, you might bring it to their attention. For example: “Tom, the other day you said I was ‘the slow kid in the office’ in getting feedback to you. I was offended because I feel I do my best to provide timely, honest feedback. Do you disagree?”

You may be opening a conversation regarding your work performance, so be prepared if it truly is not up to par. But odds are, Tom will react kindly and apologize for his comment because anyone would be offended by what they think is critical, abusive, or disrespectful.

Another great lesson in learning from personal offenses is that we are all doing our best. Someone else’s best may not be high on our scale, but we do not know what else they are facing in a given moment. The essence of etiquette is to create an environment in which you can always learn from others and others can learn from you. Sometimes this means leading by example and showing empathy, understanding, and kindness to someone who has offended you.

Hyaluronic Acid for Naturally Healthy Skin

With so many skin care options on the market, it can be daunting to try and figure out what works best without any added unnatural ingredients or unnecessary fillers.  While there are a few highly effective and clean products to choose from, one of the best is hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic acid may be a powerhouse anti-aging compound…but what exactly is it? Well, it’s a polysaccharide molecule that is naturally produced by our bodies and found in our skin and connective tissue.

Hyaluronic acid helps maintain collagen production and speeds up our skin's natural healing process. Unfortunately, as with most everything, our bodies stop producing optimal levels of it as we age, which can lead to premature wrinkles, fine lines, dull skin, aching joints, and more.

Hyaluronic acid helps to keep skin hydrated, youthful, and plump because it helps retain moisture like nothing else. When used in serum form, it sits on your skin and absorbs moisture protecting your skin from dehydration.  One gram of hyaluronic acid can hold up to six liters of water. Sit and think about that for a minute!  This is also why hyaluronic acid is so important for healthy joint function…it essentially keeps your body from getting "rusty".

Once your body stops producing mass amounts of this molecule on its own, you start noticing your skin looking less radiant, and your joints starting to stiffen.  Depressing, right?  It can be....but the fact that you can take hyaluronic acid in supplement form for your joints, or in serum form for your skin, lets you fight the signs of aging as gracefully and naturally as possible.

Hyaluronic acid and its benefits were researched over the course of seven decades, beginning in the 1930s, by Hungarian scientist, Endre Balasz. Prior to this, no other molecule had been discovered or studied that was deemed as uniquely beneficial as hyaluronic acid. Balasz went on to make the majority of the discoveries pertaining to it and its benefits. So, when it comes to one of the most effective and easy to use skin and joint care supplements, we have him to thank!

Adding hyaluronic acid to your skin care routine provides numerous  wonderful benefits to the skin, including increased hydration, improved skin texture and appearance, reduced signs of aging, and improved skin barrier function.  Additionally, HA is non-irritating and can be used by people with all skin types making it a truly versatile product.  For those achy, stiff joints a hyaluronic acid supplement in either liquid or capsule form may just give you the relief you’ve been looking for.  Worth a try? Absolutely!

Game Day Recipes Guaranteed to Please!

Crockpot make ahead meal ideas.

-------

No matter which teams fans support, they're sure to get hungry watching the action play out. That's why game day hosts need to plan for various foods to keep guests satiated as they follow the scores.

Dips, small bites and other finger foods are staples when the game is on because they can be eaten easily in front of the big screen. Utilizing one or more slow cookers to prepare such items creates more time to watch the game, stock the cooler with refreshments and ready the home theater. Slow cookers also can keep meals warm on the buffet table.

These recipes for "Pepperoni Pizza Dip with Breadstick Dippers" and "Big Al's Hot and Sweet Sausage Sandwich" from "Crock*Pot® 365 Year-Round Recipes" (Publications International, Ltd.) from the Crock*Pot Kitchens make great game day meals. Adjust as needed for the game day crowd.

Pepperoni Pizza Dip with Breadstick Dippers

Serves 8

1 jar or can (14 ounces) pizza sauce

3/4 cup chopped turkey pepperoni

4 green onions, chopped

1 can (21/4 ounces) sliced black olives, drained

1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

1 cup (4 ounces) shredded mozzarella cheese

1 package (3 ounces) cream cheese, softened

Dippers

1 package (8 ounces) refrigerated breadstick dough

2 teaspoons melted butter

2 teaspoons minced fresh Italian parsley

1. Combine pizza sauce, pepperoni, green onions, olives, and oregano in a 2-quart slow cooker. Cover; cook on low 2 hours or on high 1 to 1/2 hours or until mixture is hot.

2. Stir in mozzarella and cream cheese until melted and well blended. Serve with warm Breadstick Dippers.

3. For dippers, bake breadsticks according to package directions. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with parsley.

Big Al's Hot and Sweet Sausage Sandwich

Makes 8 to 10 servings

4 to 5 pounds hot Italian sausage links

1 jar (26 ounces) spaghetti sauce

1 large Vidalia onion (or other sweet onion), sliced

1 green bell pepper, cored, seeded and sliced

1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar

Italian rolls, cut in half

Provolone cheese, sliced (optional)

1. Combine sausages, spaghetti sauce, onion, bell peppers, and brown sugar in slow cooker. Cover; cook on low 8 to 10 hours or on high 4 to 6 hours.

2. Place sausages in rolls. Top with vegetable mixture. Add provolone cheese, if desired.

Tip: Instead of large Italian rolls, use slider buns or medium kaiser rolls to stretch the sausage mixture further and make it easier to eat while watching the game.

Game Day Party Ideas

Make your Super Bowl party a big hit!

-------

The American Football season will soon culminate in the game of all games in - the Super Bowl. Watching the action on the field is exciting, but game day experiences can be enhanced by sharing the festivities with friends or family.

Football parties can take enjoyment of the game to the next level. The following are some ways to score touchdowns when hosting game day gatherings.

Create a DIY football field table cover

Head to the nearest party store and purchase green craft paper or a plastic tablecloth. Stretch it over the expanse of the table you need to cover and secure it underneath with tape or clips. Use white tape or ribbon to mark off the field yard markings and utilize white stick-on numerals to enhance the yard line measurements. Such a festive table can double as the perfect playing field for table-top football.

Decorate a drink station

Dress up your cooler with team colors and logos. Make a goal post out of PVC piping to add a little extra whimsy to the design.

Create game-inspired foods

Football-shaped foods, from mini meatloafs to calzones to cookies to doughnuts, will make the event even more fun. Invest in a football-shaped cookie cutter to cut just about everything, from sliced cheeses to sandwiches to pie crusts to that pigskin shape.

Set up games of chance

Buying "boxes" and gambling on the outcomes of the quarters is tradition for many people who participate in football parties. However, gambling isn't for everyone. Party hosts can come up with other clever ideas to give people chances to win prizes. Purchase a few inexpensive gift cards to local coffee shops, sporting goods retailers or to supermarkets. Give out raffle tickets to all in attendance. Each time the team scores, pick a raffle ticket out of a bag or bucket. The called number gets a prize.

Consider a tailgate theme

Evoke the feelings of a true stadium tailgate by hosting the party outdoors in the neighborhood. Each home can have its own station in the driveway, with party-goers walking from home to home to load up on snacks and talk about the game.

Game day is a great time to get together with fellow fans, friends and family.
