Champion Mindset for 2022

by Toni Delos Santos
90% Mental
90percentmental.com

What do Michael Jordan, Serena Williams, and Tom Brady all have in common? They are all exceptionally talented athletes who have achieved greatness in both their respective sport and life. When we watch them perform, we see the results of the hours and hours of work that they put in both physically and mentally to be able to achieve their highest levels of success. They have all faced adversity and use the same resilience that they developed throughout their lives by implementing strong mindsets and belief systems that we can all learn from to become the best version of ourselves.

Having the right mindset is one of the most important pieces of the puzzle that individuals need to be successful. Stanford’s professor and bestselling author Carol Dweck has done extensive research on mindset, and she has established that there are two types of mindsets that exist within people: fixed mindset or growth mindset. According to Dweck, “In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, such as intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits.” She continues, “Alternatively, in a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are the starting point.”

People with a fixed mindset hold on to beliefs about themselves and their value that they are either naturally good or bad at certain skills and will never be able to attain a higher level. When we have a fixed mindset, we have limiting beliefs that were formed subconsciously as a defensive mechanism to help us to avoid feeling rejection and disappointment. These limiting beliefs get in the way of our growth and development. The growth mindset, however, is based on the thought that the ability to learn from each situation and move forward to succeed can always improve. With a growth mindset, each setback is a steppingstone that can get you closer to your goal by making adjustments. Some things will come more naturally than others, and with hard work and dedication your ability to improve and reach your goals is within your grasp.

Leaders and managers with a fixed mindset believe the talent they bring in will determine the success of the company. They are not open to suggestions and judge their work based only on the results and how it reflects on them. They are convinced that they are more intelligent and their way of doing things is the best way. This can lead to a company not keeping up with the changing environment and a competitor taking over their market share.

In contrast, when you have leaders and managers that have a growth mindset, they believe that hiring talented people will be a great addition to their team; they will bring new ideas that will be beneficial to the team. If they do not get the result they were trying to achieve, they will go back, reassess, and make the necessary adjustments. This mindset will keep employees engaged and feel that their contribution to the company is valued. Creating a psychologically safe environment where your ideas are welcomed and not judged can bring out a whole new level innovation. Having passionate people working together to achieve goals is invaluable. This mindset also creates solution minded workforce. If a certain idea does not work, they will work together until they figure out another way to make it happen.

A lot of times teams with the most talented players do not win championships. However, it is the teams that have great coaches with the ability to bring out each players potential and passion to work together for a common goal. When the team wins, everybody wins.

Boxing Day 2021

Many people may get their fill of boxes on Christmas Day. However, people living in certain countries, including Canada, know that there may be some more boxes in store on the day after Christmas as well.

Boxing Day is an annual holiday celebrated in Canada on December 26. Canadians are not alone in celebrating Boxing Day, which is observed in Australia, the United Kingdom and New Zealand, among other countries.

The origin story behind Boxing Day is not entirely known. One theory regarding those origins connect the holiday to 19th century England and the giving of boxes that included money, presents and/or food to British servants on the day after Christmas. The servants had to work on Christmas while their employers celebrated, so they waited until the following day to celebrate with their families. The boxes were a token of appreciation and a way to make servants' celebrations more bountiful and enjoyable.

Another theory links Boxing Day to collection boxes for the poor. Long known as a time of giving, the holiday season was a time to give to the poor. So when the boxes were opened on the day after Christmas, they were full and the money within them was then distributed to the less fortunate.

Modern Boxing Day celebrations don't resemble either theory of the day's origins. In fact, modern Boxing Day more closely resembles Black Friday, a retail holiday in the United States that marks the unofficial beginning of the holiday shopping season. Retailers discount items on Boxing Day, and the deals compel people across Canada to spend the day after Christmas shopping.

Canadian soccer fans who are not excited by the idea of shopping on Boxing Day can celebrate like many of their British counterparts. In England, Boxing Day has become synonymous with European football, and the Premier League has ensured its fans can spend a good portion of Boxing Day watching the action on the pitch. This year's Boxing Day slate includes 10 matches.

Boxing Day may not have maintained too significant a connection to its past. But the day remains one to look forward to in 2021.

Finding the Perfect Pet Sitter

by Candace Smith
The Etiquette Blog
Etiquette for the Business of Life

Hiring a pet sitter is a given in our busy world. As devoted as you are to your pet, leaving them overnight will be necessary at some point. Are you prepared?

Finding the Right Person

Some occasions may lend themselves to what I call a “built-in pet sitter”. This is a trusted close friend or family member who knows you, your pet, and your home well enough to easily step in and take care of things while you’re away.

But when an angel such as this isn’t available, who will you turn to? Finding the right person can be a challenge. I recommend starting with a list of what you will need from the person you hire.

  • Do you want them to stay in your home, or are daily visits sufficient?
  • Will they be needed for household tasks or only for caring for your pet?
  • What skills will they need in order to care for your pet? If your pet has special needs or requires medications, this is a big consideration.
  • What is your budget for paying this person?
Listing your answers to the above questions will give you a good starting point.
Getting to Know You
Meeting the person who will be visiting your home and caring for your pet (or pets) while you are not present is absolutely necessary. So is getting to know them – at least a little.

On the other side of the coin, it’s also necessary for you, the pet sitter, to get to know your client. Will this be a person or family and pets that you will enjoy working with?

A preliminary phone conversation will reveal whether or not you have a good feeling about this potential relationship. Do you find their voice, demeanor, and phone etiquette satisfactory? Are you comfortable speaking with them? You can tell a lot about a person from a phone conversation.

Once they pass the phone conversation evaluation, it’s time to meet in person. Both parties should make it clear that the meeting is for consideration purposes only. And make sure that your meeting includes the following:
  • A proper introduction to the animals that will be cared for. The caregiver should see them up close (cats are terrific at hiding) and should be given the pets’ names.
  • Observation of interactions. Does the pet seem comfortable with this new person? Does the comfort level improve as the visit goes on?
  • Assessment of skills. Does the pet sitter indicate in conversation that they have certain care methods and techniques that will be compatible with your pet? Find an opportunity to see this in action by making your meeting time in line with feeding or medication time and ask your potential care giver to help with the task to see how your pet responds. You might also take your dog for a walk as you interview the person, letting them take the lead to help assess compatibility with your dog.
  • A tour of the home. Show the person who will care for your pet where food and water dishes, food, medications, treats, toys, etc. are kept and how they are given. If they will be staying full-time while you are away, show them the sleeping arrangements, bathroom, and what is off limits.
  • Don’t skip the details. Even though this is a preliminary meeting, if detailed questions arise, don’t put off answering them. If your care giver isn’t allowed to park her car in the driveway, go ahead and tell her. If you are curious about how often the litterbox should be cleaned, go ahead and ask. Details from either the client or the care giver can only be helpful.
Once you’ve met and consider moving forward with a good working relationship, it’s time to dig a little deeper. Both parties should find out more about each other. References and mutual acquaintances should be called. And a scroll through social media accounts may reveal more as well.

A Great Pet Sitter
So, you’ve found a pet sitter you like and trust. Or you’ve found a client whose pets you look forward to spending time with. Ensure everything goes smoothly with these tips.
For the Pet Parent:
  • Before the day of arrival, provide a key, code, and any other entry instructions, including alternatives – just in case.
  • Make sure your care giver has the name of your vet and the name of an emergency veterinarian clinic.
  • Write down food quantities, feeding times, and medication times. Especially if you have multiple pets, it’s important to also label food containers and medications.
  • Leave the names of neighbors, friends, or back-up pet sitters in case they are needed.
  • Provide all available forms of contact for yourself while you are away.
For the Pet Sitter:
  • Communicate! Let the pet parent know when you leave and arrive, or if you are staying in the home, what your daily schedule looks like. Have all questions regarding the pets and the home answered before your client leaves.
  • Keep the home tidy. Even if cleaning isn’t on your task list, ensure that your client comes home to a neat and clean place. Or at least as neat and clean as it was when they left it.
  • Send pictures. Sending the pet parent pictures of a happy, well cared-for pet will give them comfort. However, do not post these pictures on your social media without the pet parent’s permission.
  • Follow safety rules. Make sure all food and cleaning supplies toxic to pets are put away appropriately, lock doors and windows, set alarms as directed, etc.
  • Leave a daily log of events. A written log of events, food consumption, medication reactions, behavior issues, and even cute anecdotes, will be helpful for pet parents.

Keeping pets and humans happy is a big job. But when you show care and attention to both, you can consider it a job well done!

Maintain Your Wellness Goals this Holiday Season!

by Nancy Hovde
Life Empowerment Coach

December often marks that busy time of year filled with holiday gatherings, end of the year project deadlines and last minute plans (or change in plans). Perhaps your personal life and work commitments have you so bogged down, you are having thoughts about quitting your wellness goals?

Many people believe that wellness goals are all or nothing and need to be followed perfectly. This is just not the case and why I always encourage clients to implement repetitive behaviors consistently. Why? Because behaviors that are done consistently are always easier to maintain than irregular behaviors.

Sure, you might slip up with your nutrition plan during the holidays, but this doesn’t mean you’ve failed. Reminding yourself that no one is perfect and keeping a healthy mindset perspective on the long-term maintenance plan, will allow adjustments during vacation and holiday times.

Finding excuses is easy to do. Instead of skipping your workouts, falling off track with your nutrition plan, slacking off with your sleep schedule and stress management practices, consider the following tips for your mind, body and soul.
  • You’ve heard it before, but planning ahead can be a big, positive support. Did you know that when you communicate with friends and family ahead of time, this helps them feel more supportive and creative with the holiday meal planning. I encourage clients to have open communication with family and friends to avoid awkward situations. Your wellness goals are your goals and when you respect them, others will, too.
  • Mindful eating allows for optimal enjoyment of meals and surroundings. Really focus on slowing down, enjoying each meal and eating mindfully. Be present, in the moment and enjoy the company and conversations around you. Focus on the taste of the food, the texture and smell. When we eat mindfully, this not only helps with healthy digestion, but also provides our brain enough time to signal satiety. Pause in between servings and tune in, your brain will let you know by sending a signal of feeling full.
  • Moving the body and getting activity in is definitely a priority during your travel, vacation and holidays. However, this does not mean that you must stick with your exact exercise routine. There are several options. You can lighten the load or intensity and still maintain your strength training and cardio. Getting friends or family together for fun activities can also be an option. Taking after dinner walks together. Enjoy a morning jog, hike or bike ride. Get creative and have fun by trying something new or different.
  • Take some time for self care or de-stress time. This can be as simple as taking a 20 minute nap, meditation or a solo walk. I highly encourage communicating to friends and family and simply explaining you need a few minutes to yourself. This is reasonable and respectful.
  • Remember to prioritize sleep. Studies show we need 7-9 hours per night. By maintaining your sleep, you will have the energy needed to keep active, experience a more positive mood and make any last minute decisions with clarity as well as help manage any additional holiday stress.

It is important to enjoy yourself during the holidays, after all, they are for fun, relaxing, unwinding from the monotonous work, school and the chaos. It is still possible to maintain some of your wellness goals. Hiring a life coach for encouragement, support and accountability can help get you through the holidays and right back on track post holidays.

Tips for the Perfect Holiday Cookies

Baking is a holiday tradition in many households. The aroma of freshly baked cakes, pies and cookies wafts through the air of many homes this time of year, and that makes the holiday season even more special.

Cookies are a tradition passed down through the ages. In medieval Europe, small, spiced cookies were exchanged as treats, and people still bake and share gingerbread cookies today.

Cut cookies are some of the most popular cookies to make during the holiday season. Some families may have their share of favorite cookie cutter shapes and dough recipes. Certain techniques can make holiday baking sessions easier and ensure consistent results.

· Work on a lightly floured, cool surface, such as a cutting board or stone counter top. Never work on a warm surface, which can cause dough to spread and stick.

· Roll out the dough between two sheets of baking or parchment paper. Betty Crocker recommends a thickness of about 1/8 inch, unless noted in the recipe. This prevents the dough from sticking, and parchment enables you to easily transfer rolled-out dough to a refrigerator or elsewhere.

· When rolling out dough, portion it out into a few smaller amounts to roll out more easily. This will also help it to chill more readily.

· Cookies cut most easily when the dough is chilled. Refrigerate the dough for as long as possible, ideally an hour or more - even overnight. The more chilled, the firmer the dough will be.

· Rubber rolling pin rings that slip onto each side of the rolling pin can help ensure that the dough is being rolled out to a uniform thickness.

· Dip cookie cutters into flour with each cut. Work from the center and move out to the edges when cutting out your designs. Try to maximize space and avoid scraps and rerolling.

· Some expert bakers say that metal cookie cutters cut cleaner than plastic ones. Whichever cutter you use, cut the cookie by pressing straight down; try not to twist or jiggle the cookie cutter when using it. Doughs with a high butter content can help, as the extra grease helps separate the dough from the cutters.

· If cut cookies have gotten warmer, place them in the freezer for a few minutes to firm up again and then cook. This will guarantee the cookies will not spread or distort while baking.

Extra steps may seem like they will take a lot of time. However, the extra effort and attention to detail will help produce cookies that win rave reviews

History of Christmas Tree Lights!

Lights on a Christmas tree may seem like a relatively recent phenomenon, but people who can't wait to deck the halls each December may be surprised to learn that this beloved tradition dates all the way back to the late nineteenth century. Edward Johnson, a friend and colleague of Thomas Edison, introduced holiday light bulbs in 1882. Prior to that, candles were lit on trees and families would briefly gaze at this awe-inspiring bit of holiday decor before the candles were quickly extinguished. Johnson is credited with being the first to suggest light bulbs, which were invented by his friend Edison, be used to light trees in place of candles. While many were impressed by Johnson's eight-bulb holiday display, it remained a novelty until the 1920s, when preassembled lights became more accessible. Since then, Christmas tree lights have taken hold as a must-have piece of holiday decor in households across the globe.

2021 Holiday Road Travel Tips

After a 2020 holiday season in which the pandemic forced the postponement or cancellation of festivities, families are planning to get together once again in 2021. Many people will head home for the holidays this year, and the vast majority will take to the highway to do so.

The U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics says the Thanksgiving and Christmas/New Year's holiday periods are among the busiest for long-distance travel. The highways will be busy with motorists criss-crossing the country to visit loved ones. Holiday travel may require covering a long distance in a limited amount of time. Finding ways to be efficient in regard to time management can reduce stress and improve safety.

Travel at night

If you can safely manage it, you may experience considerably less traffic in the evening hours than during other times of day. In addition, if kids are in tow, they may sleep much of the way, helping to reduce the number of times they ask, "Are we there yet?" Share driving responsibilities with another person so that each driver can take a break to prevent drowsy driving.

Get a vehicle maintenance check

No one wants to get stranded on the side of the road with a car filled with gifts and treats. It's well worth the investment to have a mechanic give a vehicle a checkup prior to leaving. Get an oil change even if it's a little early to do so. Look at tire tread wear and ensure that you have the right tires for the road conditions where you'll be headed.

Plan your route

People often rely on mobile phone or dashboard GPS systems to get where they need to go. However, it helps to have a general idea of the route so that if service drops out you can still find your way. Scout out rest stops or acceptable restaurants online prior to leaving so you have a plan for making stops in safe areas.

Stock the car

While presents may be taking up valuable real estate, pack a cooler with snacks and beverages to help reduce how many times you need to get off the highway. Also, games or other forms of entertainment can keep children occupied on long trips.

Slow down in inclement weather

The holiday meal can be reheated if you're late, so don't feel compelled to speed or drive erratically when the weather is stormy. It's not worth the risk of getting into an accident that can cause serious injuries. Travelers United, a nonprofit organization that represents all travelers, also warns that quick storms that pop up after a long dry spell can immediately make road surfaces extremely slippery. Use caution.

Planning and preparation are essential to getting home safely this holiday season.
