Now What?
American politics is like a Rorschach Inkblot test, the psychological test developed in 1921 by Hermann Rorschach in which every personality type sees something different. The United States is a heavily divided country – almost exactly 50/50 - with each side distrustful the other. Trump didn’t start it, but it certainly seems like he ripped the proverbial scab off during his four years as president. Even now, Gavin Newsom is actively blaming him for the attempt to recall him as governor of California. So, it is extraordinary to get any type of consensus but that is close to what happen this week when Joe Biden - after returning to Whitehouse from Camp David for a speech - was quick to point a proverbial finger blaming several different parties for the catastrophe happening in Afghanistan. In general, the method of the evacuation and messaging of the decision has not been well received by both sides.
This moment will not last. No doubt that both sides of this ongoing political fight will return to their respective corners in short order. Before that happens, may we offer just one simple commonsensical thought? Please close the United States southern border and protect our businesses and families. The Taliban are back and it is anyone's guess what will follow. We contend that it is reasonable to think that the war on terror is not over and perhaps never will be. Afghanistan will likely become a breeding ground for extreme anti-western philosophy again. If that is a realistic possibility then that border needs to be closed for the health and benefit of all. As it stands, it may already be too late to stop any sleeper cells that have already crossed into country.
The 20th anniversary of 9-11 is just a few weeks away. For any American who lost loved ones or someone they knew that day, they deserve their businesses and families be protected and so does the rest of the country.

Making Decisions
by Toni Delos Santos
90% Mental

“Balanced emotions are crucial to intuitive decision making.” Michael D. Eisner
As human beings, we have emotions that are based on circumstance. When our favorite team wins a championship or our proposal was successful and our company gets awarded the contract, we are happy and have the feeling of excitement. On the contrary, if our favorite team loses in the finals and our competitor gets the business over us, we can feel angry or even sad. When we have events that occur in our life either in or out of the workplace, our decisions can be greatly influenced by how we are feeling in the moment which can lead to us regretting making the decision based on our mental state at the time. Various research suggests how the decisions we make can be affected by the following emotions that we are feeling.
· Excitement can lead a person to make a high-risk decision and thinking that their chances of success are higher than they really are. If a baseball player has a great hit and is on base, he might try to steal a base when he normally wouldn’t take the chance when there are two outs and possibly resulting in ending the inning.
· Anger can interfere with decision making by causing someone to make a quick decision which is not based on logic but an emotional response.
· Fear can hold a person back from taking a calculated risk by playing it safe based on a perceived outcome stemming from emotion.
· Sadness can cause people to settle for less money than they are worth or put themselves out there to get a well-deserved promotion. According to a Harvard research article, The Financial Cost of Sadness written by Lerner, Jennifer S., Ye Li, and Elke U, people were 32 times more likely to accept 32 times less money to get paid immediately.
· Stress can cause people to be more impulsive and make a quick decision, because it can impair the brain’s ability to control impulses.
Being aware of your emotional state when you are faced with a decision is the first step to making a better choice. We now know that the best decisions are not made when we are emotional. Take a deep breathe to help clear your mind and bring yourself into the present moment. Depending on how emotional you are at the time, it might take several breaths to relax and feel logical. Write down the pros and cons of both sides and by then you should be able to make a choice that you are not likely to regret a couple hours later.

SRO Membership in Switzerland
The term SRO is an abbreviation for Self-Regulatory Organization. In Switzerland these organizations are subject to FINMA supervision and regulate the activities of financial intermediaries attached to them, including wealth managers according to Article 24 of the Swiss Money Laundering Act (MLA).
SROs are a professional designation and therefore cannot be held by a company but rather if needed must be held by a “post holder” of the company.
If you wish to offer services to “unrelated persons” via ownership of a Swiss Trust Company then you will need to gain membership to an SRO (Self-Regulatory Organization) professional designation. This is a membership granted to an owner (or employee) of a Swiss Trust Company who has passed the introductory course prescribed by FINMA regarding KYC and AML. Frankly, an SRO might be a nice designation to have whether or not you offer services to third parties. In any case, it is not a major endeavor and can be arranged through our associates in Zurich for a few thousand dollars. They will make the recommendation of which SRO is appropriate for you after reviewing your business objectives and arrange everything for you.

How to Discuss Health Concerns
by Candace Smith
The Etiquette Blog
Candace Smith Etiquette
“How are you doing?” is one of the most popular conversation starters. And yet, discussing your health, and particularly a serious health concern, is not a topic for casual conversation. This is why the typical response when asked the aforementioned question is: “I’m doing great!” or “I’m okay” or “Just fine, thank you.”
Discussions regarding health concerns are carried on with family members and friends. They are the people who care the most and will be there to help with any situations that arise.
But if you are a family member or friend with a loved one suffering from disease, injury, or other mental or physical challenge, how should you receive and respond to the information shared with you?
When You Hear the News
When a person communicates a health diagnosis, it’s not always easy to know what to say or do. It may not only be unexpected, but startling, news.
Your relationship with the person sharing his or her news will determine how the conversation moves forward.
If you are a coworker or acquaintance, you may not have as much to contribute as someone who has a closer relationship would. But a sincere response is appropriate:
- Express your concern. “Sally, so sorry (or glad depending on the information shared) your report was….”
- Assure the person that you care about her. “You’re so important to so many people, and we’re behind you.”
- Exit the topic in a way that prevents becoming intrusive. “Keep us posted as you learn more. Good thoughts!”
If you are a friend or family member who may not be directly involved in the person’s care, you might respond via the following manner:
- Express your concern and care for her.
- Ask if she needs to talk something through, letting her know that your role is to listen.
- Encourage her to continue taking care of herself and ask if you’re needed to help in any way. It’s possible she may need you to assist in finding a doctor or health professional.
No matter what your relationship is to the patient, avoid giving unsolicited advice. Everyone has their own way of dealing with health issues and this is usually determined by personal beliefs. If the person feels her beliefs are being questioned, she may feel judged, and misjudge your concern.
Even if your advice is requested, try to keep it general unless your friend or family member asks follow-up questions to get more specific. If you feel strongly about intervening with your own advice, explain that you are only expressing your opinion and it is being shared with love and concern.
Generally Speaking
Sometimes, because people want to be polite and not bring up their health issues or worry others, you might notice that they appear downtrodden or unhappy. Expressing a concern in response to what appears to be so, can be helpful.
- “You haven’t seemed yourself lately, but I’m only perceiving that. Is everything okay?”
- “If you need to talk, I’m here for you.”
When you are visiting someone, who is sick at home or receiving care in a hospital, your role is pretty simple and important: to listen as that person shares whatever he wants. It’s not the time to impose advice, but to offer any assistance as needed. You really aren’t there for conversation, your goal is to be helpful.
Caring for a loved one in your own home brings its challenges as well. Depending on the seriousness of the condition, you may feel overwhelmed and in need of care yourself. Even though it might get tiring, aiming to be respectful and considerate calls you to calmness and evenness of response. A helpful question may alleviate the tension:
- “You are going through a lot. Is there anything you need to talk through more?”
- “What can I do to cheer you up?”
- “Would you like me to call Scott to come and sit with you while I run a few errands? I’m sure you’re probably tired of me hovering around you.” Sometimes a little humor can lighten the load for the patient and the caregiver.
Once you've discussed someone's health concerns in a social setting, it’s helpful to keep in mind that the other person doesn’t want to continue the discussion into your next conversation. The next time you see or visit with him, asking “How’s it going?” might be far better than, “The last time we talked, you were concerned about your health. Is everything okay?”
This leaves the door open for him to give you an update or discuss further concerns - or not.
The most important thing is simply to "be there." Feeling supported and cared for goes a long way in helping with a patient’s recovery. Don’t overextend yourself, and don’t make the situation about you, but also don’t underestimate how much your presence will mean to someone who may need you.

Walking for Your Health
Individuals looking for a way to incorporate exercise into their lives need look no further than their own feet. Walking offers numerous health benefits to people of all ages, and it's particularly beneficial to fitness novices. Walking can facilitate a transition between inactivity and increased intensity for those who may have been away from exercise for some time.
According to Dr. Thomas Frieden, former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, walking is "the closest thing people have to a wonder drug." Any physical activity is a boon to personal health, and walking provides a host of benefits.
1. Strengthens bones: Walking can slow down the loss of bone mass due to osteoporosis. Arthritis.org notes that a study of postmenopausal women found that 30 minutes of walking each day reduced their risk of hip fractures by 40 percent.
2. Boosts cardio endurance: Regular walks can improve cardiovascular endurance, which can help people progress to more rigorous physical activity.
3. Burns calories: People can walk to burn calories and maintain or lose weight. The number of calories burned will depend on how briskly people walk, the distance they cover, their body weight, and the terrain on which they walk.
4. Improves cardiovascular health: The American Heart Association recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week. Walking can fit that bill. Walking five days a week can reduce risk for coronary heart disease by roughly 19 percent, according to a report in the European Journal of Epidemiology.
5. Counteracts effects of weight-promoting genes: Researchers at Harvard Medical School looked at 32 obesity-promoting genes in more than 12,000 people who walked briskly for about an hour a day. Walking reduced the effects of weight-promoting genes by 50 percent.
6. Tame cravings: People who have a sweet tooth can take notice that walking may steer people away from overindulgence. A pair of studies from the University of Exeter found a 15-minute walk can curb cravings for chocolate and reduce the chocolate consumed in stressful situations. Walking also helped to reduce cravings for other sugary snacks.
7. Reduces joint pain: Walking improves blood flow and helps protect the joints. This can keep people from developing arthritis and other stiffness.
Walking has many health benefits that can support the entire body.

Upscale Camping
Camping is an opportunity for individuals of all ages to venture into the great outdoors. Camping can be an immersive outdoor activity that includes hiking, cooking and sightseeing, all in a single, memorable trip.
According to KOA's 2021 Annual North American Report, more than 70 percent of North American campers changed their camping habits in 2020. First-time campers increased fivefold between 2019 and 2020, and experts note the pandemic likely had a great deal to do with that spike.
Even though camping seems like a relatively easy activity, first-time or novice campers should familiarize themselves with some of the basics of camping before embarking on their trips. Camping beginners can consider these tips to make the most of their time in the great outdoors.
The call of the wild can be irresistible. Camping enthusiasts often insist there's nothing better than sleeping beneath a star-filled sky, and anyone who's experienced a night under the stars would likely find it hard to argue that point.
Comfort and camping are not exactly synonymous. In fact, many people look forward to roughing it in the wild and intentionally eschew comfort in an effort to create what they feel is a more authentic camping experience. But those who want the best of both worlds can try various strategies to combine camping and comfort.
· Focus on a good night's rest. A good night's rest can be elusive for novice and experienced campers alike. Thankfully, campers can explore various options to make their nights out in the wild more conducive to sleep. The outdoor recreation experts at REI note that there are three types of sleeping pads: self-inflating, air and closed-cell foam. REI recommends air pads or closed-cell pads for backpackers, as these are lightweight options that won't make backpacking more difficult. Self-inflating pads work better for car camping, as these are heavier but also thicker and wider than the alternatives, providing more comfort and support. Bring along a pillow from home or an inflatable camp pillow for added comfort.
· Invest in a good cooler. It's easy to take food and beverages for granted when planning a camping trip. However, when camping for a weekend or longer, a good cooler can ensure food and beverages stay cold without forcing campers to make routine ice runs. Lightweight coolers with thick walls and sufficient insulation won't prove a chore to lug to and from the campsite and they will be highly effective at keeping meat, fish and beverages cold during your trip.
· Increase your body heat before going to bed. Nighttime temperatures can dip even when camping in summertime. Few people find it easy to fall asleep when they're cold, but a few simple tricks can ensure you're warm and comfortable when it's time to call it a night. REI recommends wearing long underwear overnight and putting on a fresh pair of clean, dry socks before going to bed. In addition, eating a light meal or snack before bed will start the digestion process, which can warm your internal body temperature and make it easier to sleep comfortably.
· Spice things up. Food cooked over an open flame is undeniably delicious, but it's easy for campers to forget that such meals are made even better with spices. But foods made around the campfire need not be bland. Spice bottles are portable and don't take up much space. Salt and pepper are must-haves, but it's easy for campers to tote along additional favorite spices to make mealtime that much more palatable.
Camping and comfort may not go hand in hand. But there are many ways for campers to enjoy a comfortable night in the great outdoors.
