Do They Pay Their Fair Share of Tax?

Politics aside, I would like to ask one specific question.  Since we keep hearing from US politicians – especially this week in Washington DC - that “the rich must pay their fair share,” what exactly is that number?  Pretty simple question, right?  Why then does no one ever want to answer it and give an exact figure?  Perhaps it is because the answer does not fit their narrative. Of course, the next logical question would be what do the wealthy pay now?  What percentage of the national tax do they pay?  It is a simple question to research, and this does have an answer which may surprise most. To that end, we offer the sources and quotes below:

Taxfoundation.org
"In 2018, the top 1 percent of taxpayers accounted for more income taxes paid than the bottom 90 percent combined. The top 1 percent of taxpayers paid roughly $615 billion, or 40.1 percent of all income taxes, while the bottom 90 percent paid about $440 billion, or 28.6 percent of all income taxes. "

Forbes:
"The top One Percent in America earns at least $480,930 per year, according to recently released IRS data that compiled earnings/taxes paid from 2015. While that One Percent of Americans makes about 20% of all dollars earned in America, they pay 39% of all taxes paid to the American government."

If you fast forward and research the years 2019 and 2020 similar results are provided.  The difficulty is that you will also see article after article on how the superrich are tax cheats and hide their money from tax collection.  Obviously, they have access to the best accountants and tax attorneys to avoid tax (legal).  The claims of fraud from our perspective, however, get pretty thin when pointing to tax evasion (illegal).  We just do not see proof of this on a massive scale, hard data points in the opposite direction and when it does occur seems to be a one-off.  Why then is it a political talking point?  A logical conclusion (and one we offer) is that the rich are an easy target for political gain.  The irony (or hypocrisy) of this rhetoric is that most national politicians seem to easily fall into that demonic one percent – even on a government salary.  Now, how does that happen?

Business Technology

Simple Tech Solutions to Make Business Easier

Technology has become such a part of the fabric of daily life that it's easy for anyone to take their favorite gadgets and gizmos for granted. It's only when power outages strike or batteries run out of power that people stop and realize just how vital a role technology plays in their daily lives.

Technology is always evolving. Whether it's system updates on a smartphone or the latest incarnation of a popular tablet, technology does not sit still. That ever-evolving nature means there's likely a simple tech solution out there to help anyone make daily life a little easier.

· WiFi extender: The pandemic forced many people to spend more time at home than ever before. While keeping their social distance, homeowners may have noticed a few spots in their home where it's hard to get a strong and/or consistent WiFi signal. A WiFi extender is a simple, easily installed and inexpensive way to remedy spotty WiFi signals around the home.

· Auto shut-off wall outlet: Parents who spent much of 2020 working from home as their kids were engaged in remote learning recognize that distractions ruled the day during the pandemic. Auto shut-off wall outlets can act as something of a safety net, turning off devices like curling irons and panini grills that distracted parents mistakenly left plugged in.

· Portable phone charger: Portable phone chargers can ensure that smartphones don't run out of juice while users are out and about. Modern smartphones do more than ever, and users rely on them to message friends and family, respond to work emails, stream their favorite songs and movies, and perform a host of other functions, all in a given day. Portable chargers are compact and lightweight, and solar-powered varieties can be especially useful when spending a full day in the great outdoors.

· USB port hub: A USB port hub can help professionals who suddenly found themselves working full-time from home using a laptop. Laptops may or may not come with enough USB ports, but a port hub can help professionals adapt to working from home without having to change their computers. A port hub, which may include as many as 10 ports, can ensure wireless accessories like a mouse or keyboard remain charged even when using laptops with insufficient ports.

Technology has affected every aspect of daily life. When confronted with problems in a typical day, consumers can rest easy knowing there's likely a simple and even affordable tech-based solution to that problem.

How to Write Thank You Notes

 by Candace Smith
The Etiquette Blog
Candace Smith Etiquette

The first rule of thank-you notes is to write them.

You are never too busy to show gratitude.  And once you master this simple template for writing these most important messages, you will churn them out easily, quickly and sincerely.

In fact, you'll wonder why you didn't do this sooner!

Because writing thank-you notes is as easy as 1, 2, 3, and 4 sentences.

1- Thank you for ___________.
2- A sentence that relates to the thing (or what) you are thankful for.
3- A sentence that references something else that comes to mind as you write.
4- A sentence that reiterates the first sentence. (e.g. I appreciate your thoughtfulness, etc.)

Here's an example for you:

Dear Mom and Dad,

Thank you for purchasing the tickets to the ballet season for my birthday.  It was so kind that you remembered that this is what I wanted!  When I was a little girl I always dreamed about dancing and I think the many lessons I’ve had are helping me with my poise and form.  Every time I think about "The Nutcracker" coming up in December, I think about my gift and my wonderful parents.

Love,
Morgan

Of course, you may put your own original style into your notes.  Individuality is encouraged.

Just remember to show appropriate gratitude by specifically mentioning the gift or act of kindness that was shown to you.  And, most importantly, specifically writing "thank you" within your note.

Sincerity is Key

When you receive a generalized note from someone to whom you gave a gift, how does it make you feel?

Dear Susan,

Thank you very much for the gift.  It was so thoughtful of you.

Kind regards,
Jade

Makes you wonder if Jade is at all aware of what you gave her, doesn't it?

Interestingly, an exaggerated thank-you has the same effect.

Dear Aunt Bridget,

Thank you for the amazing coffee grinder.  I use it every morning.  Because of you, I am sure to be awake by the time I catch the 7:00 a.m. train for my commute.  This is the best gift I have every received.

Love,
Jeremy

Aunt Bridget may be too taken with her nephew to see right through this, but you and I both know Jeremy would have rather received a new car for his birthday.

Exaggeration is a hint at insincerity.  If you are truly excited and appreciative of your gift, include more genuine exuberance.  A phone call in addition to your note is a way to say thank you immediately, and it is easier for most people to express excitement vocally than in writing.

A Couple's Thank-you

When you are part of a couple and want to send a thank-you note from both of you, it should still come from one of you.  After all, only one of you will be writing it.

However, your spouse or partner will be mentioned in your note.

Dear Shelly,

Thank you for sending over such a lovely meal.  Henry and I enjoyed it not once, but twice!  I would love to have your roasted chicken recipe.  Henry is recovering nicely, and we look forward to seeing you in person soon.  We very much appreciate your thoughtfulness during this difficult time.

Warm regards,
Joan

When Should You Write?

Now that you know how to write thank-you notes, here are some suggestions of when you should write them.

- You receive a gift
- Are asked for a meal
- Someone sends you flowers or candy
- You are hosted for an evening at the symphony, opera, a theater production, or a concert
- Someone does a favor for you
- You are hosted for a weekend getaway

Traditional Mail or Email?

Sending a handwritten note in the mail is becoming an unusual occurrence.  But this makes handwritten notes even more special to receive!

Whenever possible, send your thank-you via traditional mail.

In this twenty-first century, however, it is likely that you do not have your recipient's home address.  If you cannot get the address immediately, send an email thank-you until you are able to send a traditional note.

Or, if your situation doesn't allow you to obtain a home address, send an email thank-you in lieu of a handwritten one.

The bottom line is, show gratitude whenever, and however, you can.

Do You Know Mushrooms?

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics reports that mushrooms contain about 15 vitamins and minerals, including folate magnesium, potassium, vitamin B6, and zinc. Mushrooms also are low in calories and rich in antioxidants, which can help to lower risk for inflammation.  They may also mitigate the risk of developing serious health conditions, such as Alzheimer's, heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Mushrooms are also a great source of Selenium. Selenium is a trace mineral that we need to get through diet or supplements. This mineral is essential for thyroid health and a working metabolism. Selenium is also a potent antioxidant and may lower oxidative stress, which has been linked to many chronic diseases from type 2 diabetes to some types of cancer.

Classic Cars

They're eye-catching, often exotic and always call to mind a bygone era. Classic cars are undeniably unique and their unrivaled automotive appeal has inspired legions of fans. That appeal also has compelled many to try their hand at classic car restoration.

Restoring a classic car can be a rewarding hobby, particularly the first time a vehicle emerges from its owner's garage and hits the open road. Car buffs interested in restoring a classic car of their own can consider various factors before they lift the hood on this challenging yet rewarding hobby.

Time and Money

It's hard to know if a classic car restoration will cost owners more time or money, but restoration novices should expect to spend a lot of both as they work to restore a ride to its former glory. CarsDirect.com estimates that a restoration done by a professional shop can cost anywhere from $40,000 to $60,000, and that does not necessarily include the cost of the vehicle. If the financial commitment raises an eyebrow, perhaps would-be car guys and gals should look away from the estimated time it takes to restore a classic car. CarsDirect notes that it can take around 1,000 hours for DIYers to restore a classic car. The excitement of restoring a classic car can quickly wear off if owners don't have enough time and/or money to keep the project going at a steady pace.

The Car

Some car buffs may already envision which type of car they want to restore. Some may want to restore a classic Ford Mustang like the one they drove in high school, while others with a flare for automotive history might want to restore a 1930s classic. Whatever your preference, make sure you find a car that won't bust your budget. Even the initial cost to purchase the car from a local salvage yard can be deceiving. Some cars might only be affordable because they've experienced such extensive damage that the cost to restore them will be especially high. It's good to know what you're looking for as you begin to scour newspaper classified ads or visit local salvage yards. But allow yourself some room for flexibility in regard to the type of car you're willing to restore. That can ensure you aren't breaking your budget right away or overcommitting yourself to a project that may prove beyond your range of abilities. Online car forums can be great places to get some insight into restoration, especially for beginners.

The Project

In addition to determining which car to get and how much time and money you can realistically devote to the restoration project, car enthusiasts must determine which tools they'll need, where they're going to work on the project and the availability of discounted parts. Discounted parts can help offset considerable restoration costs, so access to a local seller or salvage yard can be a significant advantage. The internet has made finding parts easier, as resources like CheapAutoParts.com can be invaluable. A place to work also is a must-have, so garages may need to be outfitted to make projects more enjoyable. Tools also can be costly, though CarsDirect notes that different steps in the process require different tools. That can make it easier to spread out the cost of buying new tools.

Classic car restoration can be an engaging hobby. Novices are urged to learn as much about restoration as possible before they decide to fully commit to this potentially rewarding endeavor.

Eight Perfect Days in Switzerland!

by Lisa Spiller
Professional Profile

It is no wonder Switzerland is called “Little Europe.” Given eight days, you can see the best of Europe by just travelling through Switzerland.

Whether seeking spectacular natural landscapes, historic architecture, gastronomy, active adventure, sophisticated luxury, the historic and cultural influences of Italy, France and Germany, you will find it here.

Armed with a first-class Swiss Travel Pass, I arrived in Zurich and boarded a train to Lausanne. The Swiss trains are comfortable and offer panoramic windows, drinks and snacks, and the conductors are all tall, young and handsome.  However, the jaw-dropping scenery steals the show. In Switzerland, the journey itself is equally as exciting as the destination.

Upon arrival in Lausanne, I checked into the Beau-Rivage Palace hotel located directly on Lake Geneva. The Beau-Rivage beckons travelers to slow down and simply enjoy the natural grandeur of the Lake Geneva lifestyle. The glacier pure water is ideal for swimming and water sports including paddleboards, kayaks and paddle boats, all readily available steps from the hotel.

Waterfront restaurants and the Olympic Museum, one of 500 museums available for free with the Swiss Travel Pass, are within walking distance. Lausanne is an excellent launch point for the Lavaux wine region, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where local farmers produce wines, cheese and chocolate.

The locals welcome visitors by private appointment to engage authentically, share wine and dairy practices, and sell their goods that never otherwise leave Switzerland.

From Lausanne, we travelled via the Golden Pass panoramic rail to Gstaad, where we were met by Swiss farmers. They smiled under the shadow of their wide-brimmed felt hats and hoisted us onto wooden wagons for a magical horse-drawn carriage ride into the hills. We trotted up a winding gravel road past towering pines, glacial lakes, sheer rock cliffs and mile-high waterfalls to the one-restaurant hamlet of Lauenen.
