Calvin Coolidge & Self-Discipline

"Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan "press on" has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race”   - Calvin Coolidge

After reading Toni’s column (published below) regarding motivation and discipline it occurred to me that I should share an experience from last week.  Via the business platform LinkedIn, I communicated with Steve DeVore who is the founder of SyberVision Systems.   Steve was responsive, extremely gracious with his time and provided some interesting insights which I will share in future publications. If you are not familiar with his company, it was in an intriguing space having produced some of the first digital learning programs in the area of personal development, health, family relations and technology.  I will call out one specific program since it changed my life as a young man – “The Neuropsychology of Self-Discipline.”  I don’t believe SyberVision is still active creating new content but some of their older programs can be purchased via Amazon and they have aged well.

Self-discipline is a subject that has always fascinated us and remains a clear lynch-pin for business and personal success. Too frequently, however, individuals have viewed it solely in terms of sacrifice.  Absolutely nothing could be further from the truth.  Any opportunity to focus on both strategic and tactic strategies to gain desired outcomes seems to be an obvious win.

I would encourage you to give Toni’s article a close read in today’s edition and to take a look at her website.  She offers contemporary metal training programs for peak performance both in business and sport which may provide you an additional competitive edge.

Motivation + Discipline = Success

What Motivation is about finding the enthusiasm to do what you need to do to reach your goals. High level performers have what is known as intrinsic motivation. This is the desire to do something that has a higher purpose to the athlete, entrepreneur, or student to be the best they can be. Although making money and getting rewarded for their efforts are welcomed, it is not what drives them to succeed. It is the passion and true enjoyment of what they do that makes them successful. They have purpose and importance to what they are striving to achieve. In Martin Luther King, Jr’s sermon, The Three Dimensions of a Complete Life, the following excerpt is an excellent example of being your best:

“When I was in Montgomery, Alabama, I went to a shoe shop quite often, known as the Gordon Shoe Shop. And there was a fellow in there that used to shine my shoes, and it was just an experience to witness this fellow shining my shoes. He would get that rag, you know, and he could bring music out of it. And I said to myself, ‘This fellow has a Ph.D. in shoe shining.’

When I think of a person that is intrinsically motivated, David Goggins, a retired Navy Seal comes to mind. He is an absolute beast! He has competed and placed in the top five in more than sixty ultra-marathons, triathlons, and ultra-triathlons. He is also a New York Times bestselling author. In his book, Can’t hurt me, he talks about the unrelenting power of your mind and how he was able to put systems in place to overcome obstacles and repeatedly achieve whatever he set his mind to accomplish. Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Elon Musk all possess the inner desire to succeed.

As David Goggins points out, motivation alone is not enough. Motivation is a feeling that comes and goes, and you cannot rely on that feeling always being present. It takes self-discipline to stick to the strategy that you put in place. Achieving success does not always involve doing activities that you enjoy at times when you would rather be doing something else. It takes a strong mindset to consistently do what is needed even when you lack the motivation to get up after a night out or go to the gym to train after you just lost the NBA finals. The gratification you will feel when you were able to stay on track for the bigger picture and overcome the lack of motivation in the moment, will make you stronger and more determined to achieve success.

Set yourself up to succeed by making a weekly schedule and put systems in place that will keep you accountable and ensure your long-term success.

The Cook Islands a South Pacific Paradise

Located in the South Pacific, the Cook Islands is a nation of 15 islands which are scattered over a vast area, with political links to New Zealand. In 1901, the Cook Islands became a New Zealand colony but after a push for self-government in the 1960's, it developed an autonomous free association with New Zealand in 1965. As a result, it administers its own affairs, nevertheless, Cook Islanders are also New Zealand citizens.  As a point of geographical reference, the Cook Islands are an approximate 10-hour direct flight from Los Angeles on Air New Zealand.

Regarding cross-border business planning, this jurisdiction is best known for its Asset Protection Trust construct.  In review, an Asset Protection Trust is a legal structure that splits the beneficial enjoyment of trust assets from their legal ownership. A Trust is simply a contract between the people who wish to protect assets (the Grantor) and the person who will manage the assets (the Trustee) for the benefit of all Beneficiaries.

How to Improve Your Workday Alertness

A long workday can be both mentally and physically draining. As a result, office workers and professionals whose jobs are more physically demanding than office work may find themselves less alert at the end of the workday than at the beginning.

A loss of alertness as the workday draws to a close might be unavoidable. But professionals whose sense of alertness begins to dwindle in the thick of the workday might need to take steps to improve their alertness to protect themselves from injury and to ensure the quality of their work does not suffer.

· Avoid caffeine in the late afternoon. Some professionals rely on caffeinated beverages such as coffee or energy drinks to combat afternoon drowsiness. While that afternoon caffeine fix might provide an immediate, if temporary, jolt of energy, it might also affect a person's energy levels the following day. A 2013 study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that caffeine consumed as early as six hours before bedtime can significantly disrupt sleep. Professionals who reach for a cup of coffee in the late afternoon might get a sudden boost of energy, but their energy levels the following day might be lower due to a poor night's sleep.

· Avoid high-fat foods at lunchtime. Foods that are high in fat should always be avoided thanks to their connection to a host of health problems. Such foods also negatively affect energy levels when consumed in the middle of the day. The University of Rochester Medical Center notes that the body digests and absorbs high-fat foods very slowly. That means workers who eat high-fat foods for lunch won't get the afternoon energy boost that low-fat, healthy lunches will provide.

· Snack healthy. Professionals who find themselves needing a snack in the mid- to late-afternoon can sate their hunger and give themselves an energy boost by snacking healthy. Avoid snacks like potato chips that tend to be high in fat and low in nutrition. Foods that are high in fiber and/or protein can provide a longer energy boost and quell the afternoon hunger pangs at the same time. Fresh fruit and Greek yogurt fit the bill.

· Change your workout schedule. Regular exercise improves short- and long-term health while also increasing daily energy levels. Professionals who include exercise in their daily routines yet still suffer from a lack of alertness in the afternoon may need to alter their workout schedules. A 2016 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that participants who were assigned afternoon exercise programs during work hours reported increased productivity versus those who were not assigned afternoon workouts. If working out in the afternoon is not feasible, avoid working out too late at night, as the National Institutes of Health note that exercising within two to three hours of bedtime can disrupt sleep, ultimately having a negative impact on energy levels the following day.

Popcorn is Health Food

Many people will say that no movie marathon is complete without a big bowl of popcorn. Movies and popcorn have been linked for decades, but popcorn is more than just a must-have on movie night.

Popcorn lovers may be surprised to learn just how healthy this beloved snack can be.

· Popcorn can help lower cholesterol. Like many other foods, popcorn is full of fiber. Fiber attaches to cholesterol particles and helps prevent them from entering the bloodstream and traveling to other parts of the body, according to Verywell Health.

· Popcorn promotes healthy digestion. The same fiber that helps reduce cholesterol also promotes healthy digestion. Popcorn is a whole grain and the high fiber content in popcorn can alleviate constipation by stimulating the peristaltic motion of the smooth intestinal muscles and the secretion of digestive enzymes.

· Popcorn can help regulate blood sugar. The fiber in popcorn can regulate the release and management of blood sugar and insulin levels, potentially helping people with diabetes.

· Popcorn has disease-fighting properties. OrganicFacts.net says popcorn has polyphenols that act as antioxidants in the body. Antioxidants reduce oxidative stress and can fight against the development of chronic diseases. They also may prevent the development of age-related symptoms like age spots and wrinkles.

· Popcorn is a low-calorie snack. A cup of air-popped popcorn comes in at just around 30 calories. That means you can overindulge a bit on popcorn and it won't lead to overconsumption of calories. One serving of popcorn has five times fewer calories than one serving of potato chips.

· Popcorn keeps you feeling full. Thanks to its high fiber content, popcorn can fill you up and stave off hunger pangs.

Popcorn has plenty of hidden benefits that make it a healthy snack.

Hire a Personal Chef

More than ever, Americans are pressed for time. Between a grueling commute, raising children, and a day full of Zoom meetings, who has time to cook a nutritious dinner? As time becomes one of our most precious commodities, we often rely on quick but unwholesome mealtime solutions such as high calorie fast food, fattening take out, or frozen entrées. Enter the newest weapon in the fight against the daily grind: personal chef services.

A less costly alternative to a full-time private chef, personal chefs develop customized meal plans based on a client's specific tastes and dietary objectives. Entering the client's home with pots, pans, and fresh foods, the chef will prepare one to two weeks of entrées that are conveniently packaged, labeled, and ready to heat.

David Fischbein, President of Big City Chefs, a nationwide personal and private chef service brand operating in nearly a dozen major metropolitan markets, notes, "Our clients tell us they feel more productive and relaxed by reducing the time they previously spent cooking, grocery shopping, or eating out at pricey restaurants." He adds that clients rave about the company's hand-picked professional chefs, who include veterans from the restaurants of celebrity chefs such as Wolfgang Puck and Emeril Lagasse.

According to Fischbein, "Personal chef services provide a convenient and affordable luxury that allows Americans to reclaim their stressful lives.

Tips for Picking the Right Hiking Boot

Nothing can cut a hiking excursion short faster than a blister, ankle injury or uncomfortable shoes. Novice hikers may not think twice about footwear before hitting the trails, but a good pair of hiking shoes or boots can make all the difference between an enjoyable experience or one cut short by pain or discomfort.

The following shopping tips can help hikers narrow down the dizzying array of hiking footwear options.

Sizing

Each manufacturer sizes shoes differently. Therefore, if you normally wear a size 10, you may need to go up or down a size or half a size to get the right fit. Be sure to check the specific sizing chart offered by the manufacturer for the shoes you plan to buy. Go larger if you are between sizes.

Feet tend to swell throughout the course of the day. Therefore, shop for hikers at the end of the day when feet are at their largest. This will also help simulate how much your feet may swell after a hike.

Wear the socks you will use while hiking to try on trail shoes or boots. Take a walk in the shoes and put them to the test in various scenarios. Try to find an incline and walk up and down to determine if your toes will feel cramped. Walk up and down stairs to see how heavy the shoes are. Also, test them out on various surfaces to verify if they have enough grip.

Low cut or boot

Hiking experts note that hikers who carry a daypack or a load of 30 pounds or less can comfortably wear low-cut hiking shoes. Backpackers carrying heavy loads will need a full boot. But comfort also merits consideration. Boots can be heavier than shorter shoes, and that may contribute to fatigue. However, mid-size shoes or boots will offer more ankle support, which can prevent rolled ankles or more serious injuries.

Waterproof or not

If you frequently trek across streams or through muddy, damp or rainy conditions, then waterproof or water-resistant hikers may be ideal. Just keep in mind that a waterproof membrane on a shoe can trap air and moisture inside of the footwear, which may cause blisters and skin to break down more readily. Waterproof shoes also may cause you to feel hot in warm conditions.

Uppers and insoles

Upper material will affect breathability, durability and more. Leather, synthetics, insulation, and waterproof membranes are incorporated into uppers.

Insoles and midsoles provide cushioning and buffer feet from shock, says REI. Speak with a footwear professional to find the right fit and comfort level.

It pays to spend more time and money finding the right hiking footwear. The reward will be more time enjoying the great outdoors.

Shelf corporations in the United States have many profound business purposes. They are frequently used for holding personal or business assets.  Another common purpose for the creation of a shelf corporation is as a turn-key business package that can later be sold to someone who wants to start and operate a company without going through the effort to form a new one.   Others might benefit who may not qualify for a bank loan, line of credit, or government contract because they or their existing company does not have the required credit scores or a two to five year established business history.  By purchasing a shelf corporation, an entrepreneur now instantly owns an established company that has been “in business” for several years without debts or liabilities.

For Non-U.S. citizens, owning a shelf corporation in the United States may enhance privacy and open new markets.  Since the United States is not a participant in the OECD Common Reporting Standards, it is often looked upon as a privacy haven for non-citizens looking to invest here.  The Common Reporting Standard (“CRS”),  was created by the OECD in 2014 pursuant to a meeting of the G-20 nations in Australia and calls for the automatic exchange of financial account information between agreeing jurisdictions.
