Have You Built Your Bomb Shelter Yet?

It's a booming business.

-------

Financial markets are overwhelmed with fear this week. The fear is due to persistent inflation, high interest rates, and mounting geopolitical tension in the Mideast. Israel is expected to launch a retaliatory attack against Iran at any time, which could lead the region into widespread conflict. Many have taken defensive measures such as moving assets to traditionally neutral locations like Switzerland or purchasing gold and other precious metals.

Some have taken a step further by contracting to build their own physical shelters.

Building bomb shelters has seen a resurgence in recent years, driven by various factors including geopolitical tensions, natural disasters, and concerns about societal instability. People are increasingly turning to bomb shelters as a means of safeguarding themselves and their families against potential threats.

These shelters come in various forms, ranging from simple underground bunkers to more elaborate fortified structures equipped with supplies, ventilation systems, and even amenities for long-term survival. Some individuals opt to build their own shelters, while others turn to specialized companies that offer custom-built solutions tailored to their specific needs.

The decision to build a bomb shelter is often motivated by a desire for security and peace of mind. In an uncertain world, having a safe haven to retreat to in the event of a crisis can provide a sense of reassurance and preparedness. Additionally, for those living in areas prone to natural disasters such as hurricanes or tornadoes, a bomb shelter can serve as a multi-purpose refuge from various threats.

However, the construction of bomb shelters also raises ethical and societal questions. Some argue that investing in personal shelters perpetuates a sense of fear and isolationism, detracting from efforts to promote cooperation and diplomacy on a global scale. Others question the practicality and cost-effectiveness of building shelters, particularly in regions where the likelihood of a nuclear attack or other catastrophic event is perceived to be low.

Despite these concerns, the trend of building bomb shelters continues to gain momentum, reflecting a growing sense of unease and uncertainty in today’s world. Whether motivated by genuine threat perceptions or simply a desire for preparedness, the decision to build a bomb shelter remains a deeply personal one, shaped by individual circumstances and beliefs about safety and security.

No matter your personal perspective, it is a booming business – pun intended.

Hope you have a great week.

Business Psychology

The Art of Self-Discipline

The Neuropsychology of Self-Discipline.

-------

"Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan "press on" has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race”   - Calvin Coolidge

Via the business platform LinkedIn, awhile back, I corresponded with Steve DeVore who is the founder of SyberVision Systems.   Steve was responsive, extremely gracious with his time and provided some interesting insights.  If you are not familiar with his company, it was in an intriguing space having produced some of the first digital learning programs in the area of personal development, health, family relations and technology.  I will call out one specific program since it changed my life as a young man – “The Neuropsychology of Self-Discipline.”  I don’t believe SyberVision is still active creating new content but some of their older programs can be purchased via Amazon and they have aged well.

Self-discipline is crucial for several reasons:

Achieving Goals: Self-discipline helps individuals set and achieve their goals. It enables them to stay focused, motivated, and committed to their objectives, even when faced with obstacles or distractions.

Productivity: People with self-discipline are more productive because they can resist the temptation to procrastinate or engage in unproductive activities. They are able to prioritize tasks, manage their time effectively, and maintain a consistent work ethic.

Personal Growth: Self-discipline is essential for personal growth and development. It enables individuals to overcome challenges, learn new skills, and push themselves out of their comfort zones. By exercising self-discipline, people can unlock their full potential and become the best version of themselves.

Health and Wellness: Self-discipline plays a vital role in maintaining good health and wellness. It allows individuals to make healthy choices, such as exercising regularly, eating nutritious foods, getting enough sleep, and avoiding harmful habits like smoking or excessive drinking.

Resilience: Self-discipline fosters resilience by helping individuals develop the mental strength and endurance needed to persevere in the face of adversity. It teaches them to stay focused on their long-term goals and bounce back from setbacks or failures.

Building Habits: Self-discipline is essential for building positive habits that lead to long-term success. By consistently practicing self-discipline, individuals can establish routines and behaviors that support their goals and contribute to their overall well-being.

In essence, self-discipline is the cornerstone of personal and professional success. It empowers individuals to take control of their lives, make positive choices, and create a fulfilling and meaningful existence. Self-discipline is a subject that has always fascinated us and remains a clear lynch-pin for business and personal success. Too frequently, however, individuals have viewed it solely in terms of sacrifice.  Absolutely nothing could be further from the truth.  Any opportunity to focus on both strategic and tactic strategies to gain desired outcomes seems to be an obvious win.

What is the Schengen Information System?

Active in the European Union.

-------

Border security is very much in the news in the United States. So we thought it would be interesting to look at what the European Union has in place since there are essentially no borders within member States.

The Schengen Information System (SIS) is the most widely used and largest information sharing system for security and border management in Europe. As there are no internal borders between Schengen countries in Europe, SIS compensates for border controls and is the most successful cooperation tool for border, immigration, police, customs and judicial authorities in the EU and the Schengen associated countries.

Today, the Schengen area covers over 4 million square kilometres with a population of almost 420 million people, and includes 27 countries

The Schengen Information System (SIS) is a large-scale information system that enables cooperation among Schengen member states for the purpose of maintaining public security and order. It facilitates the exchange of data related to individuals and objects of interest, such as missing persons, criminals, stolen vehicles, and lost or stolen documents.

Schengen is the name of a small village in Luxembourg, on the border with Germany and France, where the Schengen Agreement and the Schengen Convention were signed in 1985 and in 1990 respectively.

The SIS allows Schengen countries to share real-time information about individuals who are prohibited from entering or staying within the Schengen Area, which is a group of European countries that have abolished passport and other types of border controls at their mutual borders. The system also aids in the detection and prevention of crime, terrorism, and illegal immigration.

The SIS operates as a central database accessible to law enforcement agencies, border control authorities, and other authorized entities in participating countries. It contains various alerts and records, including alerts for wanted persons, alerts for missing persons, alerts for persons subject to discreet checks or specific checks, alerts for persons to be refused entry, alerts for objects, and alerts for persons for the purpose of arrest for extradition.

The SIS plays a crucial role in enhancing security and cooperation among Schengen member states by enabling the swift exchange of information across borders. However, concerns have been raised about data protection and privacy issues, leading to ongoing efforts to balance security needs with individual rights and freedoms within the framework of the SIS.

Business Etiquette

Does Your Tone of Voice Need a Tune-up?

by Candace Smith
The Etiquette Blog
Candace Smith Etiquette

Biography:  Candace Smith, wife of Nobel Prize-Winner Professor Dr. Vernon Smith and owner of the extraordinary blog, “Etiquette for the Business of Life” as featured by BBC, Chicago Tribune and USA Today offers her insights.

-------

Your tone of voice is, many times, more important than the words you speak.  It is the sound of your voice that reaches the ears before the brain processes the words spoken, and that sound delivers the first clue in determining if the overall message is friendly, serious, humorous, or sinister.

A problem people encounter is that they aren’t aware when their tone of voice is leaving a bad impression or hurting feelings.  One reader shared that she can be reminded to pay better attention to how she is speaking by the gift of hearing the voice of an adult figure from her past: “Watch your tone of voice!” Her memory of receiving that instruction offers her an unexpected opportunity to improve herself.

Effective communication is the end goal in working on owning our own voices. Aiming to work on our tone of voice is a most etiquette-ful, polite thing to do, as it demonstrates self-respect and respect of others.

Unconsciously Unfriendly

Have you ever approached someone with a question or request, only to have them respond in a negative way?  Did you realize that your tone of voice may have been the cause for the unfavorable or defensive response?

Consider these common situations that have an unfriendly tone:

  • A daughter answers her mother’s question, but with a snark at the edge of the answer, inciting an argument.
  • The person making a request of the clerk at a check-out counter doesn’t hear the shrillness in her voice and is surprised when the clerk stares at her for a moment before answering.
  • During a business meeting, your coworker mentions a recent decline in sales numbers in a harsh tone that suggests the team isn’t making an effort.  The side conversations after the meeting indicate a decline in morale, too.

Each of these situations could have elicited a different reaction or response if the communication had been delivered in a friendlier, gentler, or more understanding tone. Being aware of how your words are spoken is key to having your message received effectively.

Practicing Your Tone of Voice

“Voices have a language of their own and communicate much more than the words that they say.”  ~ Indu Muralidharan

Being aware of the sound of your voice is important. Especially if your line of work requires you to speak with people on a regular basis.

  • Record yourself speaking on your phone’s video setting. It’s best to place the phone such that the focus is just your voice and you’re not distracted watching your face.
  • Video yourself “trying on” different conversational voices.  Role play alone, hearing your many pitches, ranging from “soft” to “assertive,” even “aggressive.”  Play the game with more than one person.  Give each other feedback.
  • Record the audio of your participation in a business meeting, video conference, or phone call. Afterwards, evaluate your tone of voice as if you were giving feedback to someone else.  This is a great awareness exercise.

Once you’ve heard yourself speak conversationally and have assessed where you might make improvements, it’s time to create a practice for yourself.

  • Remain aware of your tone of voice and make note of how fast you talk and how high and low your voice gets.
  • Practice varying your vocal pitch with a goal of not sounding monotone.  Stress important words as you speak to practice emphasis.
  • Try speaking in a lower, softer tone as a practice for calming or comforting the person to whom you are speaking.
  • Especially if you note that you are a fast talker, practice speaking slowly and then at varied paces.  At what pace are you most audible and clear?  What emotions are you communicating to your listener at slower vs. faster paces?
  • Find a speaker you admire who is also an effective communicator.  You might search for audio recordings or videos of this person online.  Practice speaking along with them to mimic their tone, pace, and word inflections.  Then carry this practice into your daily conversations with others.

In everyday speech, tone of voice, along with volume, pause, and emphasis all work together for clear communication.  Caring about our speech habits, and specifically our tone of voice, helps us express ourselves more clearly and vibrantly, creating connections with other people. After all, isn’t this the ultimate goal of effective communication?

Easy Tips for Choosing Your New Location

Get-Ready-Set-Move

The freedom to move.

-------

The journey of relocation is not just about moving to a new place; it's about finding a new living space, a community that aligns with your lifestyle, aspirations, and values. A journey to find a place you can truly call home. In today's post, we'll explore a few simple yet essential considerations when choosing a new city or state for your next chapter that will help you make your home-finding venture a truly successful one!

1. Employment Opportunities:

Before making a move, assess the job market in the prospective city or state. Consider the availability of jobs in your industry, the unemployment rate, and the overall economic stability.

2. Cost of Living:

Research and evaluate the cost of living, including housing, utilities, transportation, and healthcare. Ensure that the expenses align with your budget and financial goals. Having realistic expectations is key!

3. Lifestyle and Culture:

Every city has its unique vibe and culture. Consider your preferred lifestyle—whether you prefer a bustling urban environment, the tranquility of suburban life, or the slower pace of rural living.

4. Education System:

If you have children or plan to, research the quality of the education system. Consider school rankings, school choice, extracurricular activities, and the availability of higher education institutions.

5. Healthcare Facilities:

Access to quality healthcare is crucial. Evaluate the availability of hospitals, clinics, and specialized medical services in the area.

6. Climate and Weather:

Different regions offer different climates. Consider your preferences regarding weather—whether you enjoy the warmth of a southern climate, the four seasons, or the milder conditions of coastal areas.

7. Safety and Crime Rates:

Safety is a top priority. Research crime rates and neighborhood safety to ensure you are moving to an area where you feel secure.

8. Commute and Transportation:

Consider the commute to work, schools, and other essential places. Evaluate public transportation options and traffic conditions to ensure a manageable daily commute.

9. Community and Social Life:

Explore the community and social aspects of the city. Consider local events, recreational opportunities, and the presence of community organizations that align with your interests.

10. Future Development and Trends:

Look into the city's development plans and trends. A city that is growing and investing in infrastructure may offer more opportunities and a higher quality of life.

11. Taxes:

Understand the tax structure in the new location, including income taxes, property taxes, and sales taxes. This can significantly impact on your overall financial picture.

12. Network and Support System:

Evaluate your existing network and support system. Moving to a city with friends or family can provide a sense of familiarity and support during the transition. If moving away from people you know, research the types of groups and communities in the areas you're interested in to see how easy it will be to meet new people whose lifestyles, values, interests, etc. align with yours.

Choosing a new city or state is a significant decision that goes beyond geographical coordinates. It's about finding a place where you can thrive, grow, and call home. By carefully considering these factors, you can embark on your relocation journey with confidence, knowing that you've thoughtfully chosen a place that aligns with your aspirations and values. Safe travels on your path to a new home!

Why Crypto is Crashing

Tough week for Bitcoin.

-------

Bitcoin has recently been trading at around $70,000 but plunged to below $62,000 as of Tuesday.  The sell-off for bitcoin was the steepest in more than a year, according to Bloomberg.  And according to the crypto newsletter “Milk Road” a mix of several reasons are why this is occurring.

1)  International conflict: Iran attacked Israel with hundreds of drones/missiles over the weekend.   These events usually lead to panic and big sell-offs of risky assets, like crypto.

2)  Yearly ‘U.S. Tax Day’ sell-offs: It’s Tax Day in the U.S. and Americans usually sell their crypto 2-3 days before payments are due to try to raise money to pay their taxes.

In any case, crypto, which is almost always volatile, has been crashing over the last few days.  If you are not familiar with the crypto market here are a few of the reasons for its volatility:

Speculation: Much of the trading activity in the cryptocurrency market is driven by speculation. Traders buy and sell cryptocurrencies based on their expectations of future price movements rather than intrinsic value. This speculative nature can lead to rapid and significant price fluctuations as market sentiment changes.

Lack of regulation: Compared to traditional financial markets, the cryptocurrency market is relatively unregulated. The absence of strict regulatory oversight can contribute to increased volatility, as there are fewer safeguards in place to prevent market manipulation and fraudulent activities.

Market sentiment: Cryptocurrency prices are highly sensitive to market sentiment, news, and events. Positive news such as regulatory approval or adoption by a major company can cause prices to surge, while negative news such as security breaches or regulatory crackdowns can trigger sharp declines.

Market liquidity: The cryptocurrency market is still relatively young and lacks the liquidity of more established financial markets. As a result, even relatively small buy or sell orders can have a disproportionate impact on prices, leading to increased volatility.

Please keep in mind this information should not be considered as financial advice. Investment decisions should be based on individual research and consultation with a qualified financial professional. The value of investments can fluctuate, and past performance is not indicative of future results. Always consider your risk tolerance and financial goals before making investment decisions.

Diet is the Key!

Fill up on healthy foods.

-------

Diet and exercise are the key components of maintaining a healthy weight and protecting yourself against chronic disease. According to the Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services, eating smart and being active have similar effects, including reducing risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, some cancers, and diabetes. In addition, these healthy living strategies can improve personal appearance and improve overall well-being - helping people live longer and maintain their independence.

People may wonder how to eat better when faced with many diets, each of which promises great results. It can be confusing when navigating all of the options, and there is no magic formula to eating better. Common sense can come into play when attempting to eat better, and individuals also can consider these strategies to make diet work for them as they seek to live healthier.

· Eat colorful, varied, nutritionally dense foods. Medical News Today says each meal should be 50 percent fruit and vegetables, 25 percent whole grains, and 25 percent protein. Select an array of colorful foods that will provide most of the nutrients needed.

· Choose fiber-rich foods. Fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and legumes are good sources of fiber. Fiber helps people maintain digestive health and can help you to feel fuller longer, reducing the potential for overeating, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

· Note how you feel after eating. Create a food journal where you jot down notes about how you feel after eating certain foods. If you notice that certain foods or ingredients trigger adverse reactions, it may be worth avoiding that type of food or looking for an alternative. Stomach upset or bloating after eating dairy, for example, may indicate an intolerance for lactose.

· Explore the Mediterranean diet. While you should avoid fad diets that often produce short-term but unsustainable results, a Mediterranean diet has stood the test of time. According to the authors of a new study published in JAMA Network Open in October 2023, middle-aged and older adults with overweight or obesity and metabolic syndrome lost visceral fat (belly fat) and showed a greater reduction in the percentage of total fat while adhering to a Mediterranean diet. They also had delayed loss of lean body mass, which often comes with aging. Mediterranean diets prioritize legumes, seafood, vegetables, and "good" fats like olive oil.

· Control portion sizes. Sometimes it's not what you eat but how much you eat that affects health. Weighing and measuring food can help you control portions and understand how many calories you're consuming each day. The National Institutes of Health says eating plans that favor 1,200 to 1,500 calories per day for women and 1,500 to 1,800 for men are good targets to lose weight at a healthy pace when combined with moderate exercise.

Balanced eating is a major component of a healthy lifestyle. While there are many fad diets, eating plans with a proven track record that are supported by the medical community may be your best bet.

How to Grill a Better Burger!

Grilling season is upon us.

-------

Backyard barbecue season is starting to heat up. Although many people grill all year long, grilling season kicks into high gear in spring and summer.

Burgers will always be quintessential grilling fare. It should come as no surprise that the month of May is National Hamburger Month. That's likely due to Memorial Day weekend - which many view as the unofficial start of summer - being one of the first times of the year people begin grilling burgers. Despite burgers' popularity, it's easy to make mistakes when preparing them. These tips can help anyone build a better burger.

Use freshly ground meat

Buying ready-made ground meat (of any variety) is taking a gamble because you don't know when it was ground, how many animals it came from or how it was handled. By freshly grinding the meat at home you will have greater control over the cut of meat and the fat content. Personally ground meat will be fresher, especially when you get nice cuts of meat directly from your local butcher. Top chefs suggest dicing cold meat into chunks and freezing for about 10 minutes prior to grinding for the best results.

Fat is key

For the most juicy, flavorful burger, you'll want a ratio of 80 percent meat to 20 percent fat. Some people like to eat lean, but with a burger, the fat will be necessary and it's better to select leaner meats for other dishes.

Don't overwork the meat

Handling the burger patties too much can lead to dense, tough burgers. Gently shape the burgers into round, 1-inch thick, flat discs. To prevent the burgers from rounding in the middle during cooking, press a dimple with your thumb in the center of the patty to help it cook evenly. It's a smart idea to weigh each patty to ensure uniformity of size and even cooking.

Don't add salt early on

Salt added to the ground meat before it's shaped can draw the liquid out of the meat, leaving a dry burger behind. Sprinkle salt sparingly while it is cooking for flavoring.

Avoid overcooking

Most health authorities recommend not leaving any pink meat in a burger made from ground meat. According to BBC Good Food, burgers can be cooked for 5 to 6 minutes on each side for medium and 8 to 9 minutes per side for well done. For the best results, use a food thermometer to check internal temperature. The USDA says ground meat, whether it's pork, veal, beef, or lamb, should be cooked to 160 F

Flip as desired

The cooking resource Serious Eats debunked the myth that burgers should only be flipped once. Flipping the burger repeatedly, as often as once every 15 seconds, encourages faster, more even internal cooking and can dramatically reduce cooking time.

Keep the patties separate

Let everyone build their own burgers, as keeping the cooked meat away from the burger buns for as long as possible will reduce the chances of the juices making the buns soggy. Soft, squishy buns tend to make for good burger eating, as they will not overwhelm the meat with too much crusty bread.

The smell of grilling burgers is in the air. Ensure that every burger is a masterpiece by utilizing some important cooking tips.

Why is Pickleball So Popular?

A few insights to the game invented by a congressman.

-------

Crowded pickleball courts are a testament to the popularity of a sport that has taken many communities by storm. A 2023 report from the Sports & Fitness Industry Association indicates just under nine million people played pickleball in 2022, which marked a stunning 159 percent increase in participation over just a three-year period.

With such significant increases in participation, pickleball undoubtedly has piqued the curiosity of millions more who have not yet picked up a paddle. Individuals whose curiosity has compelled them to give the sport a try can consider this rundown of pickleball so they're as prepared as possible upon picking up their paddles.

The sport

Pickleball, invented by a congressman from the state of Washington and two friends in the 1960s, combines components of badminton, ping-pong and tennis. A ball made of plastic is used in pickleball, and the ball is slightly larger than a tennis ball. Tennis courts, which many communities have now re-designated as pickleball courts, are still widely used as playing surfaces for pickleball players. The nets for pickleball are lower than for tennis, and that's due to science. According to the paddle and apparel manufacturer Paddletrek, after the first bounce a tennis ball retains about 60 percent of its bounce, which means it can reach a height of nearly 46 inches. A pickleball retains between 38 and 44 percent of its energy after bouncing, which means it peaks around 30 to 34 inches. That's why tennis nets are typically lowered for pickleball competitions.

Is pickleball a team sport?

Socialization is one of the foremost health benefits of pickleball, potentially helping to reduce feelings of loneliness that can increase risk for depression and other conditions. Pickleball can be a team sport if players prefer doubles competitions, but it's also played in one-on-one settings as well. But even players who prefer singles competitions can reap the socialization benefits of pickleball by engaging with their competitors and the wider community of local players.

When does a pickleball game end?

Debate is ongoing as to whether professional pickleball should institute a shot clock to increase the pace of play, but no such clock currently governs the game. According to USA PickleballTM, games are normally played to 11 points, and players must win by two. Tournament games may play to 15 or 21 (win by two).

The popularity of pickleball has exploded in recent years. Non-players who are curious are urged to give this beloved sport a try.

There is even a professional league.
